30 Sep 2019 - The 'Judy' European Premiere

September 30th, 2019.

it’s BFI London Film Festival Eve Eve… and the first day of what I’m hoping will be 14 consecutive days of events in London. It’s kind of like Christmas has come early… except last year that particular Christmas was more of an arduous test than a reward. This year… here’s hoping for something better.

But it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and today was basically still Me On The Starting Blocks…

Here’s how it went down:

“If this movie is a tribute to the seventh month, somebody’s going to have a lot to answer for…” - fortunately, in this case it’s a biopic for Judy Garland (1922-69), singer, actress and Dorothy in the classic Wizard of Oz (1939)

Whether the esteemed Ms Garland could also control the weather is unknown, but if so then today’s forecast of heavy rain might have had an alternative cause.

“Screw mobile phones rendering DSLRs obsolete, this thing renders MOBILE PHONES obsolete!!” ”Yeah, but does it answer phone calls?” ”As if anyone even uses their mobile phones for that anymore..”

“There. That’s your obvious point of weakness right there. And obviously it now occurs to me I shouldn’t have said this quite as loud as I just did…” Meanwhile, the Paparazzi get set up.

Sadly, wireimage does not reveal who this is, but she was interviewed and she was photographed by the paparazzi. I’m going with ‘wealthy financial backer with possible underworld ties’ , not because there’s any evidence of that, but because it sounds kinda edgy.

“Just trying to keep your umbrellas dry in the rain…” According to the helpful folk at wireimage.co, these are Natalie Herron and Royce Pierreson; and thanks to imdb.com, I’m informed that Royce Pierreson is in this movie, and plays the role of “Burt”.

Although I initially assumed the effortlessly bronzed look meant he was in the film, it turns out Rupert Goold is actually this film’s director. He’s also directed an episode of ‘The Hollow Crown’ (which I’ve never heard of) and the movie ‘True Story’ which, excitingly (according to imdb.com) is indeed Based On A True Story.

Kate Fleetwood, beyond merely being ‘the person standing next to director Rupert Goold’, is an actress, with credited roles in Les Miserables (‘factory woman 1’), Star Wars The Force Awakens (‘First Order Officer’) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part1 (‘Mary Cattermole’)

“The umbrella is keeping me dry, but on a Gross Domestic Product basis, I feel like my dress is considerably more valuable” Jessie Buckley is in this movie as ‘Rosalyn Wilder’, and is best known for the movies ‘Beast’, ‘Wild Rose’ (which had a BFI LFF premiere) and the recent TV series ‘Chernobyl’ which even I’VE heard of.

“if you had any respect for fashion and this amazing dress, you’d insist that your editors push politics and brexit off tomorrow’s front page and instead mourn the damage that the rain has done to this masterpiece”

“Just remember… I know where you live, and I know how much you owe me from those on-set poker games…” Mysterious Old Lady has power and charisma…

Bella Ramsey is best known for playing the uber-cool Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, but she plays Lorna Luft in the film, and she’s best known for being in the movie ‘Grease2’… so from a certain point of view Bella Ramsey is better known than the person she plays. (am I allowed to write that? is it disrespectful?)

“Don’t accuse me of prejudging you… but none of you look like what I’d expect fans of Judy Garland to look like…” Darci Shaw, who previously has only been in four episodes of a TV Show called ‘The Bay’, plays ‘young Judy’ in the film.

“Well… that was fun. Can I play Young Dumbledore next?”

“I haven’t looked in a mirror for weeks… do I have a moustache I can twirl evilly, of did my beard grow differently?” Andy Nyman’s imdb.com credits are a fascinating mix of entries: he was ‘Jail Guard’ in Star Wars The Last Jedi, ‘Clive the Robot’ in Despicable Me 3, the character ‘Nuts’ in the Shaun the Sheep Movie, Winston Churchill in ‘Peaky Blinders’ and a superhero (?) called ‘The Tumor’ in the movie Kick-Ass 2.

“She’s actually 6’ 7”” - it’s a forced perspective thing” . I have my doubts, but I’m busy keeping two cameras and a GoPro dry in a fairly heavy burst of rain, so I’ll call it ‘plausible’

“I haven’t met any of these people before… how on earth do they know my name?” Rufus Sewell plays the role of (real-life) producer ‘Sidney Luft’ in the film - Luft was a producer of ‘A Star is Born’ (1954) which starred Judy Garland (after it was made with Janet Gaynor (1937), but before it was remade with Barbra Streisand (1976) , and again with Lady Gaga (2018) )

“Rain? In England? At this time of year? Unthinkable!!” . I’d say… inevitable. Rufus Sewell’s imdb.com credits provide an interesting mix of TV (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, The Man In The High Castle, Pillars of the Earth) and films (Dark City, The Illusionist, A Knight’s Tale)

It’s Renee Zellweger! Across some 500+ Premiers, I’ve actually NEVER photographed her… although incredibly that’s also true of Rufus Sewell, Rupert Goold, Bella Ramsay, Andy Nyman, Royce Pierreson and the upcoming Gemma-Leah Devereux.

“Do you like his broad shoulders? I insisted he have them widened especially for this premiere!!” How… interesting. And unfortunate. it’s also started raining heavier AND the red/pink carpet appears to have gotten a lot crowded all of a sudden. Oh, joy.

“Where’s Mister Impact? I was really hoping to hear an RnB/Hip-Hop rendition of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow” Sadly your good friend and mine Hakeem Mr Impact is presently in Japan for the Rugby World Cup (yes, it’s true… I follow him on twitter), and as far as I know he’s never yet hosted a Curzon Mayfair premiere. I assume local inhabitants feel quite slighted at the oversight / insult.

“I like you guys - you’re a lot less shout-y.” Renée Zellweger looks in our direction where We Three photographers were standing (due to the rain the autograph dealers were forced to stay undercover to protect the items they wanted signed… where as we all have water resistant gear. Or, rather… I REALLY hope my gear is water resistant : I’m T-minus 1 day to London film Festival and I NEED that gear!!)

“What was it like working with…. erm… pick somebody you’ve worked with!!!” Renée Zellweger has worked with quite a lot of people - Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, Colin Firth in the Bridget Jones films, possibly Robert De Niro in the animated Shark Tale.. and Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain, which is where Renée Zellweger won an Oscar.

“I prefer not to stand under branded umbrellas… unless you have some Aston Martin ones?” Gemma-Leah Devereux is best known for five episodes of The Tudors and possibly 14 episodes of something called ‘Casualty’… however she plays the very famous Liza Minelli in this film.

I don’t know who this, but that silvery hair is magnificent.

I do know who this is, but I wish to assure you, gentle reader, that this is only because “ShayShay”, shown here in green, was on The List of premiere attendees.

“Are you finished?” Actually, with BFI Luminous tomorrow followed by 12 days of BFI London Film Festival… I’m basically just getting started. I’m not sure, but I think the leftovers I made yesterday should last me close to a week and a half….

so… that was that. A not-too-crowded but quite rain affected premiere, featuring mostly people I’ve never photographed. And it’s fairly close to my usual bedtime as I post this, which means I might be in some kind of mental state where Day 2 of 12 becomes plausible.

Until… tomorrow!!
