(FLASHBACK) : The 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' 10th Anniversary RCM

July 7th, 2009/2019.

The Harry Potter movies were certainly very big, but I only ever got to photograph two, and I never got to photograph them from INSIDE the actual event. For ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ I had an out-of-London meeting that meant I couldn’t get to Leicester Square until about half an hour AFTER the premiere had begun.

There was no chance of getting a spot in a pen, but I did the best I could at the time.

Here’s how it went down - in widescreen’n’black’n’white ( while the original journal, in colour, and with commentary, is HERE) :

David Yates
Emma Watson

So… that was that. I was (very) annoyed at the time that my monthly out-of-town meeting happened to fall on the same day as a large premiere - this happened every now and then, but given the stars involved I was pretty glad I got ANY photos. However, it apparently rained very heavily in the afternoon buildup so at least I missed that!

Since then I went on to not-quite get into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part2, arrive too late to get into Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (theatre opening), and actually amaze myself and get into Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald.

Next 10year anniversary to be re-edited in RedCarpetMonochrome : Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”

(FLASHBACK) : The 'Public Enemies' 10th Anniversary in RedCarpetMonochrome

June 29th 2009/2019.

While not necessarily a particularly momentous movie, Public Enemies was in itself quite an enjoyable premiere - my first experience of the madness of a Johnny Depp premiere, my first experience photographing the lovely Marion Cotillard, and also my first (and presently only) experience of photographing director Michael Mann. (To clarify, I don’t really love many of his films, but I do recognise him as a director with a certain ‘style’). (Still not enough to make me like ‘Heat’, though. Sorry!).

Anyway, 10yrs later and I had an opportunity to revisit my original shots and give them a widescreen’n’monochrome re-edit…. and here’s how they look now:

Public Enemies Premiere

So…. that was that. Another 10-years-later re-edit. It wasn’t a great premiere as such, but the shot of Johnny Depp waving cheekily past the shoulder of that large bodyguards remains one of my favourites, and would you believe it : years later at the premiere of ‘Mortdecai’ I actually got Johnny Depp to sign it!

Until the next 10yr anniversary, I suppose… although I didn’t photograph it well, that should be Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince, where I arrived very late and shot the event from outside the event.
