6 Nov 2014 - The 'Kundo : Age of the Rampant' European Premiere

November 6th, 2014.

It's not every day that I have a chance to photograph a premiere where I literally know not one of the actors or director going in, for a movie I'd never heard about. And though it was cold and threatening to rain, and then I got home and learned that Getty and Wireimage weren't at this premiere and even the mighty IMDB.COM doesn't show the actor or director's image....

.... I'm willing to look the fool and post this journal anyway.

Apologies in advance : I'm way, out of my depth here. Even my cameras are Japanese, and that's not really a good thing either.

Here's how it went down.

***** PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I'VE GOTTEN ANYTHING WRONG *****

Welcome to London. The temperature is COLD.

If the actor coming to this premiere looks like either of these two, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to recognise them. But I fear my chances of that happening aren't so great...

To ensure I don't miss out on shooting the more important attendees, in the absence of seeing who the autograph dealers mob, I'll be relying on the other tried-and-true method of Star Identification : looking at teenage girls and seeing who they scream at / swoon over / demand to be have photos taken with.

The guy who draws pen-sketches of actors and directors was at this one : I'm not sure he was able to give his to the actor...

The name of the movie is "Kundo : Age of the Rampant", but one of the few things imdb.com will tell me about it is that its Korean title is pronounced : "Kundo: min-ran-eui si-dae". Which sounds pretty cool.

What's more, they've laid a fully-fledged red carpet and have security. I've been to MANY worse setup premieres in my time : this one's positively legitimate!

She arrived early and was photographed against the Sponsors' Wall, but I don't know who she is (or who he is) or why that person is holding an umbrella. To summarise : there's not a lot that I know.

"Jennifer Lawrence? I don't think she's coming to this one. Hunger Games isn't til next Monday." The forecast for that will be Noise, Dealers, and Mayhem

The man at the far right was interviewed at great length. Which means he's either very important or really REALLY needed detailed instructions on how to find the nearest toilet.

But enough distractions - this is the man the teenage girls have come to scream at, swoon at and declare undying love to? And I don't even know his name, which imdb cites as "Dong-won Kang" while the Korean Film Festival Facebook page calls him "Gang Dong-won" while a girl on twitter from the premiere hashtagged him "GangDongWon". I... I just really like the jacket.

"You can call me what you want as long as you don't insult the jacket". per IMDB (and if I'm right about who this is), this gentleman is best known for his roles in "Woochi (2009)", "Haunters (2010)", "Secret Reunion (2010)" and "Voice of a Murderer (2007)".

"I know it's cold. That's why I wore a jacket. No, you can't have it : it's cold. You should have brought a jacket". This conversation threatens to go circular.

The crowd politely but earnestly rushes along the pen to attempt to get an autograph. Suddenly I have a lot of spare space to switch to the fisheye lens. It's a Samyang 8mm.... and it's made in Korea!! (you're welcome)

Our hero is interviewed against the Sponsorship Wall. Fortunately, he is tall as I have no chance of improving my spot.

"Who's that guy? I think he's the Director" I dearly hope it is : if it IS, then the man on the left is Jong-bin Yun (per imdb) / Yoon Jong-bin (per Facebook). I'm sorry I don't know enough about Korean to even pronounce a guy's name correctly... or in this case even recognise him..

"If you like it, ladies, put a ring on it" imdb does not list him as married, but to be fair I don't usually cite them as a source for dating advice... (though I feel I should check and see if Charlize Theron is still on the market, as it were)

Just for once: no iPods or iPads in attendance.... just Samsungs as far as the eye can see (to be fair I wasn't checking brands, I was taking photos)

"Anyway, the queue for the popcorn looks MENTAL... so I'm outta here"

And that's the end of that chapter.

And that's the end of that chapter.

And one year later... I've learned nothing but did it again for the 2015 London Korean Film Festival premiere of 'Ode To My Father' / 'Gukjesijang'

But.. this one was a premiere I was mightily underqualified to be at. I mean.... I've watched Korean Movies. Their sense of Vengeance is amazing. 'The Host' was cool. 'The Good The Bad And The Weird' was... well... more 'weird' than 'good' or 'bad'. 'Stoker' had a Korean director and that was great and I was at the premiere. 'Snowpiercer' - the English Language one - was problematic but certainly stylish...

... ah, who am I kidding. They'll never let me into Korea anyway. My passport has FAR too many Japanese stamps on it. Still... it's another for the archive of movie premieres : I've done over 250!

Until next time!
