5th Oct - The 'Effie Gray' (World) Premiere

October 5th, 2014.

It's been about two weeks since I last did a premiere, which was more by inadvertent 'choice' than their absence - I was out of the country for four days and missed not one but two (2) premieres in that time. However it's premieres-a-go-go for the next couple of weeks, and only the prospect of meeting up with an alleged paramour tomorrow after work might defeat (or perhaps 'valiantly vanquish') my chance of making it two, then three, then four (then five) premieres in two, three, four or (possibly) five days.

But for now, a small venue and a small movie purporting to have a 'World Premiere'? Here's how that went down.

It's a world premiere, so that means road closures, people camping overnight, media from multiple countries, giant floodlights beaming into the sky...  sometimes. In this case it's a couple of dozen people on a sidewalk and a cobblestoned road that won't be closed to traffic once it begins.

Still, there's barriers and security and they're doing some kind of origami thing with the red carpet. I remain hopeful (and the cast listing is actually quite credible)

That said, I have no idea what this is all about.

Our first arrival does not appear to be Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, Emma Thompson, David Suchet or Derek Jacobi. In contrast to that august group of actors, however, this man (a) came while they didn't, and (b) his suit jacket is pretty awesome.

Our first arrivals are Claudia Cardinale and a giant red truck. One of them is in the film, while the other... I'm actually surprised that a giant truck never crossed a red carpet at (say) a Transformers premiere.

Claudia Cardinale, imdb informs me, was the female lead in Federico Fellini's "8.5" (I can't find the 'half' sign on my keyboard) and Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In The West". She was about... uh... fifty years younger at the time.

Our next arrival is 56 years Claudia Cardinale's junior and is wearing a red dress : it's Dakota Fanning.

"I'm not signing anything from last century or from the Twilight series of films". Well... that still leaves several movies, including Spielberg's War of the Worlds and even Kim Possible's "A Sitch In Time"

Last time I photographed Dakota Fanning was also coincidentally at this very cinema two years ago at the premiere of "Now Is Good". I was also stuck on the other side of the road to the pens and had to deal with through-traffic. I guess that makes it a tradition?

"I'll acknowledge you over there with the Pentax, but I'm not coming over there". Oh, well.

All of a sudden remembers she left the tickets for the movie back at the hotel... but is worried that her hairstyle is insufficiently similar to the one on the movie poster. (That's my concern with ever being clean-shave, given my photo on my passport is not me clean-shaven)

Meanwhile, this is not the film's writer (and excellent actress) Emma Thompson. However, I have seen her wear a hairstyle similar to this one, plus she has worn a scarf, so in her absence I'm calling this person "Almost But Not Emma Thompson"

"Almost But Not Emma Thompson" walks past, and adjusts her hair to "Awesome, But Not Quite" status.

Excitingly, we have new arrivals : Tom Sturrdige on the left is in this film, but as his wife is (a) Sienna Miller who is (b) even prettier and (c) whom I've never photographed, I think I'll prioritise accordingly. Also, if your spine is this shape when you're standing up straight, please see a chiropractor.

Dakota Fanning is now posing for the Paparazzi, and I won't bore you with the number of shots missed by a combination of passing car traffic and substandard Pentax autofocus. But the number is pretty high...

"I know it's highly inappropriate, but will you go out with me?". I plan to use a line like that one day too. Not at a premiere, though, necessarily.

Photographer at Top : "Look left! Look right! Look way! I'm not even shooting anymore... it's crazy!"

"Check it out. This is a photo I took last year that got fifty likes and a couple hundred shares on twitter". Damn... that's a lot of shares.

"I.... I.... I loved you in Twilight". Another photo the Pentax's CENTRE FOCUS couldn't figure out. Please label your comments either Hashtag-IFeelYourPain or Hashtag-FirstworldProblems. Currently I'm hashtag feeling my pain.

This photo of Tom Sturridge's assistant pointing at Tom Sturridge's earlobe is as good a shot of the actor that I managed...

... so I'll go back to elementary triage 101 and keep photographing Sienna Miller, then. She was in G.I.Joe : The Rise of Cobra... which was an awful, awful movie. How awful? ICE SINKS in that movie. Not Sienna Miller's fault, though. I don't think she had any involvement with the script.

"Dakota Fanning was in TWILIGHT? Wow... I had no idea. That totally legitimises the whole franchise". It ...umm...no it doesn't. Arguments could be made for Anna Kendrick managing that feat, though.

Blurry Therefore Art, I always say. (The white border makes it extra pretentious. Also even more Art.)

The premiere is almost over, and I'm still yet to photograph Tom Sturridge's face in focus... but a lens flare/star-burst off a person's hat is pretty rare, so I'll take it.

Finally! Part of the face of Tom Sturridge in focus! (fortunately this is all good practice for London Film Festival which starts on Wednesday)

So... that was apparently a world premiere? Whatever it was (or wasn't) what it IS is another entry for "The Archive of Movie Premieres"

Until next time!
