17th Oct : 'The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby : Them' Premiere

October 17th, 2014.

Something rather unprecedented happened today in the realms of London Film Premieres. Two premieres, one location, briefly at the SAME TIME. Even more oddly, one of them was part of BFI London Film Festival.. .the other wasn't.

Sadly, both films had very attractive female leads... neither of whom attended.

Here's the second of the two (loosely speaking, it started half an hour later), and how it went down:

Literally two separate lists... literally one place. Although the Alan Rickman premiere took place half an hour earlier, it's kind of like giving birth to twins. One is slightly older, both are the same age. (Or something.. the cider I'm drinking at this time is making my maths slightly hazy)

Our main (and also Only) star in attendance for THIS film: James McAvoy, here with girlfriend and fellow actor Anne-Marie Duff. His confusion : probably something to do with the odd title of the film "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby : Them". It's up there with "Horton Hears A Who" in some respects.

The confusion about the film's title is understandable, however once you get onto imdb.com you realise that it's part of a series of films titled "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby...." with "Him", "Her" and "Them" variants released in 2013, 2013 and 2014. I'm starting a rumour that the fourth in the series will be called "Neither".

Mere moments after Alan Rickman had vacated this same spot promoting his film "A Little Chaos" (journal to follow), James McAvoy took a spot marked by sticky-tape 'X's and proceeded to be interviewed (photo taken on my GoPro, if you can believe it)

"You play Professor X, while the guy we just interviewed used to play Professor Snape... what odds we can get the guy who plays Professor Moriarty to get up here next?" Please get Andrew Scott here... any pretext will do. Preferably make him angry, as he was both over-cheerful and wearing a hawaiian shirt last time I saw him being interviewed.

"Hey, I was Mister Tumnus in The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe, and I'm as proud of that as I am of my role as UPS Guy in Muppets Most Wanted earlier this year". Thanks, imdb.com

"Many say your hair should have started thinning by now if you're ever going to look visibly like Patrick Stewart as Professor X in the X-Men films. Any comment on that?"

"Sure, 'Filth' really tested my acting range... but I think it's Gnomeo and Juliet that's by far my most subversive role". I'm making that up. I haven't watched either film. I'm merely hoping it's true.

James McAvoy's wife Anne-Marie Duff is also an actress, having won a Welsh BAFTA and nominated for 2 each of the British TV and Film Baftas. I can't see much to make light of - she seems very nice. I've previously photographed her at the premiere of "Nowhere Boy" back at the 2009 BFI London Film Festival.

The combined "Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby : Them" and "A Little Chaos" had one additional guest also worthy of note, and I won't attempt to guess whether he was a guest of Rickman or McAvoy. Damian Lewis is best know for having been in the Forsyte Saga (2003), Band of Brothers and Homeland.

Ned Benson is the writer and director of the Trilogy of 'Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby' (Him, Her and Them) films. If he has a George Lucas streak in him, no doubt he'll be working on a prequel trilogy next, featuring a hated CG character and the undermining of previously beloved characters. I theorise, because just this once imdb has let me down and not informed me what his next projects are.

"No, sadly Jessica Chastain couldn't be here. But if you want me to sign your DVD of Zero Dark Thirty, I have no problem with that"

Elsewhere on the L-Shaped Red Carpet, Alan Rickman signs for his Premiere for "A Little Chaos" which stars such skilled performers as Kate Winslet, Stanley Tucci, Helen McRory, Matthias Shoenaerts and... well... to be frank, Alan Rickman too.

"Please don't ask me questions about Sony / 20th Century Fox / Marvel, comic books, X-Men and the Avengers. It's a legal minefield and I'm not really qualified to answer. But how about this "Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby Trilogy, Huh?"

"I don't know who any of these people are... or how this phone works... or what I'm doing here" Photograph first, check The Internet later.

"Why aren't my co-stars here? Well... Jessica Chastain? Doing here hair. ViolaDavis? Doing Jessica Chastain's hair. Ciaran Hinds? Softball practice.  Bill Hader? Tae Bo training. Kate Winslet? Not in this movie.... anyone else?"

It's camera rigs like this that make me feel using one hand to press the shutter and the other to steady my camera is ridiculously archaic. Can you believe that when using my GoPro at premiers, I have to hold it aloft above my head without so much as a quadrichopper, carbon-fibre monopod or antigravity device to help me?

Levitating Head Of Director Shot? tick mark to that... now bring on Steven Spielberg.

One more shot of the crush. The people behind the 2m high black exclusion fence actually have quite a decent vantagpoint. I'll have to keep it in mind for future premieres if I can't secure a decent spot.

So... that was one... of two... at once! The other journal will follow in due course.... but I need a good night's sleep so I'll do that tomorrow.. There's only two days of BFI LFF to go, but I'm giving myself tomorrow off because I'm taking pity on my own sleep deprivation, given its follow on effects to people I care about. Like me.

Still... Sunday for BFI LFF closing, and then I'll sit out an wait for the next premiere.... which is one day after that.

Until next time! (have a good weekend : it's what I'm planning)

... and it's another one for The Archive of Movie Premieres which is here

ps. if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or facebook at premieresdotco.
