15th Oct - The BFI LFF 'Whiplash' Premiere

October 15th, 2014.

Today's rain was the heaviest it's been at BFI London Film Festival so far. Accordingly the crowds were small, and the question of whether my Pentax or my Nikon would die in a Biblical deluge came ever closer to being answered.

That said, bad weather makes for interesting photography, so here's how it went down:

Tonight's premiere featured a cool'n'smooth soundtrack blaring from numerous (thankfully) water-resistant speakers, and was for the movie "Whiplash"

The rain was forecast, and eventuated. I didn't bother with an umbrella and went straight for a waterproof ski jacket (in black : I like to stay formal at events like these)

No matter how wet it gets, if they bought a carpet, they're using a carpet. (And I was a bit overly proud of myself for deducing that "O.L.S." was an acronym for Odeon Leicester Square).

Today's List contains only four photos (in contrast to the one across the 'Square about half an hour earlier which didn't have a list, and if it had there'd only be TWO photos on it). Sadly, one of them is not Paul Reiser (whom only I of the people around me seemed to remember), but fortunately one was J.K.Simmons, which most of the people around me ALSO seemed to not remember.

"That's it. That's perfect. It couldn't be any more perfect if you were Scarlett Johansson looking seductively at me on the red carpet. Actually, on second thoughts..... it's not really all that perfect. But it's not your fault, Steve"

Our first arrival is also our MAIN arrival : J.K.Simmons, who is probably best known for being Peter Parker's Boss in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies. I kinda want to digitally insert a cigar into his mouth to complete the picture, but given the consistent rain it wouldn't really work.

Actor John Hurt walks a red carpet for a movie he's not in, and all is good with the world. I like John Hurt, and if I lived nearby and got free tickets to these events and DIDN'T feel the need to stand out in the rain photographing people for no reason I can adequately explain that would pass muster at (say) a Dating Situation... I'd also grab the tickets and my trenchcoat and have myself a pleasant (and dry) evening.

Oh, good. It's raining a bit more heavily. I was worried this was going to be no challenge at all.

Damien Chazelle is the director and screenwriter of this film, and he's young enough to make me rethink my life. A bit. I mean... sure he's a cinematographer as well, but surely his DSLR-in-the-rain-skillz aren't quite as good as mine? (Please tell me they're not quite as good as mine!)

The other actor from this film at the premiere is Miles Teller, who as well as being surrounded by umbrellas at really odd heights and angles, like seemingly everybody aged under 30 in Hollywood, was also in the most recent 'Divergent' film.

Good news for fans of the Awesome Moustache Man who's been showing up at a lot of this year's BFI London Film Festival premieres : he was also at this one, desperately trying to protect his most precious asset (hint : not the beret he's wearing)

I don't care who this is... we have a female on the red carpet and that to me is noteworthy enough that she gets photographed no matter how much that orange scarf lashes with the sparkly grey of the dress and those combat boot heels.

I guess what I'm saying by posting and including this photo of J.K.Simmons in this journal is that if you want to hire me photograph your wedding, event, opening, premiere, zombie event in a professional way, even if it rains I can do it. But I'll also let you know right now : the photos will be even better if you let me push away anyone blocking shots by wearing a large green plastic hoodie over their head.

So.. that was a rainy albeit productive evening. I'll post the other journal, for the much smaller "Love is Strange" premiere, as soon as I can. London Film Festival is on til Sunday, and there are at least another three premieres I'm looking to photograph (and the evening after LFF finishes there's ALSO another premiere). But that's later... for now it's another movie for "The Archive of Movie Premieres" which is here.

Until Next Time!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or facebook at premieresdotco.
