The 2023 Evening Standard Theatre Awards

It’s been a while between theatrical drinks : the last time I did the Evening Standard Awards was in 2019, when it was held on a closed-down road near the London Colosseum… prior to which it had been at the Theatre Royal… prior to which it had been at the Old Vic.

Today? Outside Claridges. How did it go?

Umm…. here’s how it went down:

We begin our adventure across a road from a hotel, where something is set to happen. I own longer lenses, and higher step-stools, but sadly a prior engagement prevented me from bringing either of them.

“It all hinges on this V, Valerie. If I screw this up, we’re lost… as I suppose you might appreciate.”
”My name’s Megan. Who are you talking to?”

“Do we want these flowers to go Goth? Because I brought paint, and I think theatre should go Goth…”

“Tom Hiddleston is coming to this?? He’s mine, d’you all hear??”
”What if he brings a date?”
”He’ll dump her here and I’ll take her place”

Inasmuch as I assumed almost all of my photos would be shot in the classic and time-honoured way (ie. past a paparazzi cordon), my early favourite shot is this backlit photo of an arriving <insert name> Celinde Schoenmaker

“It’s mine! All mine! But try to make me look humble, if you can…”
Evgeny Lebedev is the owner of the Evening Standard, in the same way as I’m the owner of this website, except his newspaper has a puzzle page with sudoku and battleship, whereas my website isn’t quite clear whether the Evening Standard Awards should go under “Theatre and Fashion” or “Awards”

It’s Jake Shears! I don’t know who Jake Shears is, but I am capable of base pattern recognition of Hew_mons if shown a photo on wireimage that’s similar enough.

<figure at far right> “You should take a photo of her. She’s famous”
Based on the fact she’s standing in front of the sign, and you need to navigate past security to GET to the sign, I photograph her. <edited to add: she’s Anoushka Lucas, but I’m a Smearer who doesn’t frequent TheAter other than the annual Oliviers and this event, and I don’t know who she is>

Daniel Mays in silent repose.
He died quickly in Rogue One a few years ago now, but imdb tells me he’s also known for playing “Allan: Pirate Flunky #1” in Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn in 2011, a movie I’d long since forgotten but weirdly came up on a conversation with a friend less than 24 hours ago.

“I’ve done other things. In all the ways that count, I’m a well-rounded person”
I’m not. This is all I have. Please save me, if you’re Scarlett Johansson or Charlize Theron and you’re reading this.

I don’t know who she is, but she appears surprised to see me. No sure why, I show up at all these events, whether I’m welcome or not, whether the journals get views or not. <edited to add : Patsy Ferran, if that’s helpful>

And then suddenly the THIRD bus drove past the event and for a while the passengers get to take photos while blocking those of people across the road.

“That’s not Tom Hiddleston. Go around again…”

I don’t know who this is but she was photographed in front of the posing board, and she’s one of about three people I photographed away from the posing board. So… yeah… here you are.
(edited to add: she’s Isley Lynn, who won the ‘most promising playwright’ award on the night! - with thanks to Naomi!)

Wireimage assures me that this is Tanya Reynolds, but I mostly photographed her because the shadows cast by the setup lights made it look like she was wearing a barbed wire necklace, which if nobody has thought of it I’m about to trademark, or at least copyright. So… contact me if you want to buy that idea.

Asa Butterfield has come a long way since I photographed him 12 years ago at the royal premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo (in 3D)” . I, on the other hand, have not come quite as far. I still live in the same apartment, and walked past Leicester Square today while walking here.

“Boy George? He’s here? Oh, wait - he’s me and I AM here!”
Back in 1983, when I was but a young lad growing up in Sydney, Australia, never would I have thought that one day I’d photograph singer Boy George. Then I photographed him at the Fashion Awards a few years ago. But now I’ve photographed him again.

“What’s under the hat? Well, without giving too much away I’ll give you this warning: it’s easily upset and hasn’t been fed for a little while”

It’s Hayley Atwell! I photographed her earlier this year at the premiere of “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1”. I also still have the first two seasons of Agent Carter on DVD sitting in my unwatched pile and I will, I hope, one day get around to watching them to see what all the short-lived (?) fuss was all about eight years ago.

“You had your chance at photographing me, and you missed it, and that’s your cross to bear. … erm… please don’t stalk me, though. That's not a satisfying way to solve your problem”. Identification pending.

“This jacket was pure black, and now look at it. No, I don’t want to talk about it, yes it looks fabulous, not it wasn’t worth it”
A real David Tennant.

The look that says “If you don’t know who I am, I’m cool with that” and I respect that. I may not recognise many attendees at the Evening Standard Awards, but I’m cheered by the fact that none of them appear to be ‘social influencers’ and tik-tok stars.

I think this is somebody who worked at the Evening Standard Awards but she’s incredibly pretty and I always prefer photographing people candidly, who are NOT posing. I have little choice at most events nowadays, but it’s still a preference. Is that weird? erm… don’t answer.

It’s Jack Wolfe! (psst… I don’t know who Jack Wolfe is, but if nothing else I’ve always liked the ‘e’ at the end of “Wolfe” slightly more than when it’s a double-ff instead)

“Imma grab some canapes and champagne then me’n the boys are going to find a volcano to throw this necklace into. If the dark lord shows up, tell him… erm… we went the OTHER way.” Identification pending.

It’s Tom Hiddleston!! he’s been best known for playing the Norse Trickster God “Loki” across movies, Disney TV shows and even an episode of the Simpsons since 2011. He’s also played other roles in movies like <checks> “Kong: Skull Island”, “High Rise”, “Only Lovers Left Alive” and “War Horse”

“No, I didn’t bring the hat with the horns. I typically don’t”

Tom Hiddleston looks past two lanes of cars, numerous people with mobile phones, and a Bulgarian on a stepstool and into the f2.8 lens of my Nikon. I feel…. I’m not sure. Perhaps I’m immune.

Tom Hiddleston signs for fans. Or “Fans” as I prefer to think of them.

Jenna Coleman: still very pretty, in case you wanted to know. She’s best known for being a Doctor Who sidekick (is that the word? I never watched the show) in the Peter Capaldi era, and playing the titular Queen Victoria in “The Young Victoria” which I patriotically watched…. as much a non-British person can.

Jenna Coleman. Still pretty. Yeah, I’ll repeat it. I posted three photos of Tom Hiddleston, so let me have This.

Sam Mendes! He’s big in theatre (citation required) but also directed two James Bond movies (Skyfall and Spectre)

I manage to photograph Mark Gatiss just as a fourth bus pulls past the event.

I keep shooting. It’s what I do that defines me.

Ruth Wilson!

And again!

I took more photos, but quite honestly until I figure out who they are, I’m capping it here. There’s another event tomorrow, and I do need to get some sleep at some stage.

Until next time!

13 Nov - The 2016 Evening Standard Theatre Awards

November 13th, 2016.

I like theatre (citation needed) - enough so at least that I was willing to leave my gentle rustic hamlet of St Albans on a crisp Sunday to photograph the 2016 Evening Standard Theatre Awards and once again possibly reveal my innate lack of knowledge of all things theatre-related. That, or just take photos of people who I've seen in movies. I got there late, but the event's public pens don't usually fill up until it starts. Or so I recalled from last year's 2015 Evening Standard Awards.

Here's how it went down (with commentary to be fully filled in later....)

This building has about 5000x more facebook and twitter followers than I do. To be fair, it's a very nice building.

The Stage Door. As used by such luminaries as Elton John and Tom Hiddleson, who elected not to run the gauntlet of fans, dealers, paps and media. It's a nice looking and well-lit door.

Much like more recent Marvel films, the cast is great, but it lacks a certain narrative flow.
