6 Mar - The 'Tomb Raider (2018)' European Premiere

March 6th, 2018.

It's been over three weeks since my last premiere and I'm finally over my 2-week flu as well as (mostly) having made my peace over having missed this year's Baftas. To celebrate : London had a European premiere that my three major sources of Premiere news listed as (a) unconfirmed, (b) unlisted and (c) unlisted respectively, and which the morning Metro made no mention of. So... an unlisted unconfirmed European Premiere.

Here's how it went down.

The decision to take photos from His Excellency the King of Burgers rather than from street-level wasn't to do with weather or comfort (or laziness) but the three giant view-blocking arches (two pictured) the big posing board and the very oblique angle to the stage from any pen that was open at the time they opened the pens. Also I was hungry.

Tomb Raider is a series of (insert number of) games that has already spawned two previous movies (unrelated to this one). I for one can't wait til they cast a guy in the main character role because.... you know... equality is a two-way street, people.

"You're not going to set the TV screen on fire as well, are you? Because although it'd be awesome a lot of what I'm wearing is flammable"

"No I can't move, I'm actually Load Bearing. And in unrelated news, I intend to be standing right here when Michael Fassbender arrives and comes around the corner"

"Most of the people over there want an autograph. A couple want to ogle your dress. Actually to be honest most of those people are the same people" Alicia Vikander won a best supporting actress Oscar for 'The Danish Girl', whose premiere she also attended.

"I like how the shoulders of your dress come up on the sides like wings. I don't know what they're called... and I realise now I didn't put that comment in the form of a question. How are you, though? I'm fine"

"Or you could wear a really warm beanie which is less form-fitting but a lot warmer and zanier" "I think I'll stick with the coat..." - Alicia Vikander was also in and at the premieres of "Jason Bourne" and "The Light Between Oceans"

"If she's not using that beanie, I'll have it" - the night outside (near as I could tell) wasn't quite so cold as to require setting things on fire for reasons other than promotional. Also : this is Kristin Scott Thomas, who I photographed late last year (also from Burger King) at the premiere of "Darkest Hour"

I don't know who the lady with the horizontally striped top is, but my level of confusion and fear at the mystery is slightly less than the woman on the left.

"That 'The English Patient' never got a Marvel-style cinematic universe remains one of the industry's biggest disgraces.... but I'm not going to make Kristin Scott Thomas think about what might have been by mentioning it..."

"Are you at least buying some food to thank Burger King for letting you sit there?" . Actually yes - I bought two teas (I still have a light cough), a pair of apple pie sticks (feels like a way of giving you two small things rather than one medium sized thing), and some fries.

Tomb Raider's director is a man with the unlikely and awesome name of 'Roar Uthaug'. I think you could only make it cooler with a slash through the 'o' and a circle above one or both of the 'a's, but really it's already fantastic enough.

Jaime Winstone is in this movie, and looks absolutely nothing now like she did at last year's premiere for 'Jawbone' , something that *might* be explained by the fact that I photographed her sister (?) Ellie Rae Winstone at that event.

"I'm sorry. I didn't want what I was wearing to overshadow what the lead actress of this movie is wearing to this premiere. By which I mean : I'd like to thank my stylist - mission accomplished, baby!" - I don't know who this is, but the dress is eye-catching.

"I just want to say your name a few more times before I ask you some questions, if that's okay"

"They want you to go over there and take some photos for twitter or snapchat or instagram or something. I don't know what it is but I hear the kids are into it" I'm not sure.... does anyone under the age of 40 actually watch movies??

Michael Fassbender, arguably best known for being the android David in 'Prometheus' and 'Alien Covenant' isn't so much a random attendee at this premiere as the husband of Alicia Vikander. I've made this photo slightly blurry to make a deeply artistic point about... art. or something.

"I have a middle name. It also doesn't have any umlauts or dipthongs or anything. But I'm pretty happy with how the movie turned out, if that's of interest"

"From what I can remember from London Fashion Week, you don't need to use the arms of coat jackets. They're mostly just for show" . True, but the pockets can be useful for storing extra camera lenses. Not the big ones, mind, but wide-angle and short-range portrait focal length.

"Security guard looks glum. Let's make him feel bad by showing how much fun we're having!!"

So... that was that. Not sure if the decision to shoot from Burger King was the right one - the photos aren't exactly brilliant, but the three giant arches they erected and then set fire to the top of would have made ground-level photography tricky and/or very uni-directional because long-range wouldn't have been possible... and thus potentially more boring.

But the good news is that it's another premiere for The Archive of Premieres, and there's also another premiere (triple confirmed, no less!) this coming Sunday. So.....

Until next time!
