6 Feb - The 'The Mercy' Premiere

February 6th, 2018.

Excitingly, for the 11th consecutive calendar year I'm going to be able to photograph some (hopefully many) premieres in London. The Baftas are a scant week-and-a-bit away, but to get myself into the groove I've been out of since last year's Star Wars The Last Jedi premiere, there are three premieres. This is the first.

Here's how it went down:

This movie is called "The Mercy", but my arms are slightly too short to fit the title in from my perch just outside the premiere, where I'm standing with about this // much consent from event Security.

Rather than acknowledge the title of the movie, which has already forced me to name this journal "The "The..."", I'm doubling down on The Merc.

It briefly snowed (!) at this premiere (I wasn't around : I was at a nearby Pret staying necessarily warm) - the protective plastic was removed minutes before the event started.

Awwwwww....cute security / explosives-sniffing dog. Would probably bite off your hand if your bag or its content smells weird, but nicely affectionate otherwise.

Our first arrival is lead actress Rachel Weisz - arguably best known (based on density of Dealer Autograph Items) for being in the "original remake" of The Mummy movies, but she won an Oscar for 'The Constant Gardener' and was also in 'My Cousin Rachel' , 'The Lobster' , 'Youth' and, say 'Oz the Great and Powerful' .

Scott Z. Burns is the writer of this film, and I'm ashamed to say the beanie I was wearing on the evening was considerably less classy and formal (it even had a pom-pom). (it was however very warm)

Mark Gatiss is arguably best known for being the writer/creator (and brother Shylock) in the BBC 'Sherlock' series, which was awesome for two series, okay for the third and kind of spectacularly imploded in the fourth. However, he's also great in a small role in 'Game of Thrones'

David Thewlis was most recently in 'Wonder Woman' (which sadly did not have a London premiere) - his hat in that movie was even better than the already great one he wore to this premiere.

Yeah, it was cold. (David Thewlis is best known for being Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter films , but was also in such diverse films as The Imitation Game , War Horse and Anonymous )

David Thewlis appears to be judging my choice of beanie for this event rather harshly.

Our next major arrival : Colin Firth - Oscar Winner for The King's Speech, and also in such movies as 'Kingsman the Golden Circle' and 'The Railway Man' . Meanwhile, I am reminded that I'm not merely out of practice at photographing premieres, I'm also standing in an exposed position at a premiere without having thought to bring a scarf to cope with the icy breeze.

Is that man on the far left wearing sunglasses at night? Are those sheets of paper a spec script for a second Mary Poppins sequel that integrates it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is that phone mounted backwards atop a wire coathanger? Do I remember how to photograph a premiere? All these and more questions are rather confronting and I'd rather not answer.

In contrast to the herculean effort I made to get out of bed early after a night of a couple of beers more than it was prudent to have in the previous evening, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was actually the first man to singlehandedly sail a yacht non-stop around the world, taking 10months to do so in 1968/69.

"This isn't a jacket, it's a thermal blanket, and no I'm not taking it off" Anna Madeley was in the movie 'In Bruges', and several episodes of 'The Crown' and 'Silent Witness'

"I'm not doing interviews further to the left - there's a breeze and not only is it cold but it would risk my hairstyle, and I'm not doing that" Jonathan Bailey has been in a very large number of TV Series I either haven't watched or heard of (typically both), and was in a single episode of Dr Who.

I'm not sure I can wear the beanie I wore to this premiere at future premieres. I feel like everyone is still judging me. IT'S WARM, DAMNIT!!

"If this looks like a gang sign, that's fine. But realistically I've lost feeling in this hand and I'm going inside where it's warm and my assistant is organising me a thermos of boiling tea."

"We're two degrees of separation from the DC Cinematic Universe AND Harry Potter!!" . Hmm... on an extreme technicality I'm two degrees from MARVEL. (and I'm a five minute walk to the Tube where it's warm, and right now this is much MUCH more important)

So.... that was that. Premiere #1 for 2018. There is another one on Thursday - the European premiere for a Disney / Marvel movie, which I'm not getting my hopes up too high for, given that Thor 3 didn't get one, Guardians 2 was a screw you from Disney, and Dr Strange was the last *cough* "Premiere" *cough* they had for a Marvel film, and all my shots at that were through a pane of glass.

So... until next time! ... whenever that is. Feel free to follow me on:
