5 Apr - The "A Quiet Place" 'VIP Fan Screening'

April 5th, 2018.

I have only photographed one previous event at the Curzon Soho, which was back in 2013 for the Nicole Kidman / Matthew Goode premiere for "Stoker", and therefore I was suitably pessimistic about the likelihood of getting photos at the not-even-classed-as-a-premiere 'VIP Fan Screening" of this movie.

Turns out pessimism is the new realism, but because I try to make 'desperate' somehow look sexy, I was there anyway. Here's how it went down:

As long as the anaesthetist at Dr Wyman Chan's does a half-decent job, the Curzon is indeed likely to remain a quieter place.... than it would be if it wasn't for near four-lanes of London traffic outside.

I am fully aware that me standing in amongst this crowd as if this somehow qualifies as a "premiere" is precisely the kind of behaviour that any half-way pretty passerby will refuse to give me eye-contact for. But some days the nice red neon lighting on the underside of a cinema makes it all worthwhile.

"We really need to get that bus driver to move past the cinema. It's totally spoiling the ominous mood we're going for...."

I left the Nikon at home and left this premiere to the tender mercies of a Pentax autofocus in low light. As a result I'm always looking for areas of bold contrast to ensure the K1 is autofocusing as required. (translation : this photograph is about SCIENCE, people!)

In the spirit of equal opportunity (if high-contrast jumpsuits aren't your thing) here's the subtle jacket/coat (and contrasting shoes) of writer Stephen Merchant (Extras, The Office).

A silver people-wagon pulls up, Dealers are advised to get (the f**k )back, and our first arrival... arrives. Noah Jupe is in this movie, and was also in the movie "The Wonder (2017)" which I have not (yet) watched.

"Mom warned me about you guys" - Noah Jupe also holds the imdb credit of "Child" in one episode of the series "Downton Abbey" which after all this time I still have not yet watched.

A silver Mercedes shows up, and the husband-and-wife, director-star, power couple of John Krasinski - Emily Blunt are about to exit, and try as much as possible to avoid giving eye-contact, let alone autographs, to dealers and autograph hunters alike.

John Krasinski (microscopically small at far top right with a beard) is the director of this movie, and his imdb entry also includes voice credits for 'Monsters vs Aliens' ("Cuthbert") and 'Shrek the Third' ("Lancelot")

As John Krasinski's face passes behind a photo he does not intend to sign, his wife, actress Emily Blunt leaves the car and her personal assistant will use her wider-by-about-two-emily-blunts girth to provide full body cover to prevent pretty much just me from getting photos of her for the  rapid journey to the door. Damnit.

It's Emily Blunt (and a helpful third-party camera flash) - she's possibly best known for being in "Live Die Repeat" (usually known as "Edge of Tomorrow" ) with Tom Cruise, the excellent 'Sicario (2015)' , and the upcoming Mary Poppins Sequel.

"High And Blind With A Monopod" has, prior to today, been my shorthand term for the (purely hypothetical) lengths I would go to in order to photograph a premiere. Today..... it stopped being purely hypothetical.

Sadly I missed the part where Emily Blunt and John Krasinski posed against this backingboard, but here's Kristin Scott-Thomas, last photographed at "Tomb Raider (2018)" . I guess I could have cropped this photo rather than draw attention to the strangeness of the photo.... but I liked that strategy in 'Inception' when it was used for dreams, so I'm using it here.

Sigh.... I really need to get to the point where I can shove myself into one of these events just by saying I work for PREMIERES.CO (, man). Without being crash-tackled and dragged outside, I mean.

And so... that was that. When mountaineers climb deadly mountains in horrifically dangerous conditions and are afterwards asked "Why?" they answer "Because it's there".

And when I come prepared, in full (partial) gear, to step myself atop a singularly tiny molehill in the middle of a city, and am asked "Why?"... my answer is the same. And you know, with the right mental framing I can convince myself that my actions are no less heroic.... in principle.

The good news is that it's +1 for the Archive of premieres, and there are three (proper) events coming up within the next week.

ps. if you want to know whenever I post one of these journals (occasionally better than this), feel free to follow me on Twitter at berndt2_photo, or on Facebook at premieresdotco, or since I've pretty much proven I'll go to just about ANY event... I guess I'll see you.
