Premieres

11 Dec - The 'Darkest Hour' UK Premiere

December 11th, 2017.

Some days, especially days when the temperatures hover around the 1-2 degrees celsius range, and also days when you're not really inclined towards standing outside for long hours (especially in order not to get a cold for the third time in a fortnight) you start looking at other ways to photograph a premiere. Original, risky, but almost certainly warmer ways.

Time, in other words, to look at the King of Burgers and buy myself a seat for a couple of hours and see how it goes down:

For the record, I purchased a coffee, tea, large fries and hot apple pie in order to secure my seat and (I'd like to believe) have nobody ask questions about the big Nikon D4 and 80-200mm lens I had lying on my chair...

Your good friend and mine Hakeem Mr Impact and DJ Turn On A Light 4Tha Darkest Hour was on the red carpet to warm up a frozen crowd. However (devastatingly) I was unable to hear any of what I assume were some brilliant rhymes based on the word 'Churchill'.

This is what a photographers' pen random draw looks like. It's not so much scissors-paper-rock or first-come-first-served as you might think.

No fans at dropoff sadly meant that long-range photos will be limited (this is a pity mainly because the angle down to the stage is a bit on the extreme side of awesome).

It's Gary Oldman! He might only have one Oscar nomination to his credit (best actor for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ), but he's been in movies as far afield as a Hannibal sequel, several Harry Potters and a weird yet entertaining turn as the villain in The Fifth Element.

"My hands are cold and your wrists are warm.  I don't see the problem here..." - Gary Oldman plays Wintson Churchill in the movie.

I guess it's all worth it for a shot like this, which I couldn't get any other way than sitting where I am, right here, right now, nice and warm, wondering how much of my tea I can leave in my paper cup to ensure I can plausibly say "but I'm still finishing that" if I'm gently encouraged to vacate my seat for other patrons. Who also want a view of the premiere)

Gary Oldman and Gisele Schmidt... and here's the big problem with my comfortable, warm and interesting vantagepoint : I never considered that the angle I'd be shooting at would be the precise angle that also ensures EVERY photo of Gary Oldman has his eyes blocked by the thick black rims of his glasses.

"You know, if you looked up more you might see some fans in Burger King...". Gary Oldman does not look up, he looks out. At, like, the distant future and the infinite horizon and stuff.

"Put a fingerprint on this silk top and I'll have you executed. I'm a Dame, and I can make that happen" - Dame Kristen Scott plays Clementine Churchill in the film.

The rims of Gary Oldman's glasses are like a well you could lose yourself in, but his eyes? I can't tell.

Gary Oldman in side-profile. I'm fairly certain he has eyes. I just can't tell for sure.

"I can try to get him to turn around... but it'll cost you." I dunno... the Burger King corporation already got a fair bit of my money this evening. Besides, I have photographed Gary Oldman at such events as the premiere for the Robocop remake (does anybody remember that?) and a previous Empire Movie Awards .

"If I were to call tonight very 'Chur-chilly', would we get thrown out of this event?" - probably not, but it wouldn't be undeserved.

Success... is something I've now defined as photographing part of one of Gary Oldman's two eyes.

Randolph Churchill stands at right... but Gary Oldman, like that urban myth about some animals not having the ability to look up.... appears not to have the ability to look up. If he's accomplished all he has without that skill, them more props to him.

In other news : Lily James has arrived (to the great relief of the Germans sitting nearby, who I think had plans to go to Harrods but didn't want to leave yet) - I most recently photographed her this year at the premiere of "Baby Driver" but was also in such films/premieres as 'Pride & Prejudice & Zombies' and Disney's live action version of 'Cinderella'

Lily James with no, one or two hands on hips, and even one view partially blocked by lighting rig scaffolding : I do try to cater to every whim in these journals.

Samuel West has been in such movies as Notting Hill (1999) (he played 'Anna's Co-star') and the wretched Van Helsing (2004) (he was Dr Frankenstein, and his creation was possibly the only sympathetic character in the movie)

Above : Lily James layers up... meanwhile amongs the crowds in Burger King the temperature has seen me remove THREE layers of clothing. For what it's worth, I've still got another two layers before I'm definitely going to be asked to leave (and if that happens it's cold enough that I'll be needing those layers again...)

"Does Gary Oldman have eyes? What kind of a question is that?? I mean... I think he does.... actually I'm pretty sure he does" Joe Wright directed this film and has directed such other films as the Keira Knightley-led "Pride & Prejudice" (the one sadly featuring no zombies, but I did quite like that version too), and the pretty brilliant "Atonement"

Laura Bailey. That's all I've got - I'm already on my way out.

Laura Bailey. That's all I've got - I'm already on my way out.

So.... that was that. If I'm honest, I'm going to call it a noble failure. It's not a bad space to gawk from, but as a vantagepoint from which to take decent photos in this configuration the stage is too close, the media at too far an angle, and specifically at this premiere the dropoff provided no fans for arrivals to interact with. But it's good to try new things, and take risks, and see what happens. Especially on premieres where you can 'afford' to play and mess up.

And in any event it's still another for the Archive of Movie premieres.

Tomorrow, for example, it'll be all phaser set to 'conservative' for the last premiere of the year. It's for a small film you probably haven't heard of....

Until next time!

Until next time!

6 Dec - The 'Molly's Game' Premiere

December 6th, 2017.

The last two events I photographed intersected directly with my Twin Pillars of weakness : Theatre and Fashion, in the form of the Evening Standard Theatre Awards and the (British) Fashion Awards. But today I was back doing what the website (premieres.co) says : a premiere.

Here's how it went down:

Now if I can just get the drone to hover here for the next 90minutes or so.... (I'm kidding : that would be fairly illegal in a "sir, we're going to need you to talk to these nice people calling themselves policemen" way)

Molly Bloom wrote the book (and is the person) upon which this movie is based. I'm going out on a limb and guessing Idris Elba plays her in the movie (hey, don't be so genderist...!)

Aaron Sorkin is the director and screenwriter of "Molly's Game" - he won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the brilliant 'The Social Network', got a nomination for the outstanding 'Moneyball' and how the movie 'Steve Jobs' didn't get more love for its screenplay and overall excellence I'll never know.

"It's me!! And please don't break my heart by asking me to be more specific" - I'm guessing it's another one of the fourteen producers of this film. Sadly Michael Cera and Kevin Costner, who are both in the film, did not attend the premiere.

"I'm in Leicester Square. Where are you?" "Me? I'M in Leicester Square, damnit!! Where are YOU??" "Leicester Square. If you're here, why can't I SEE you?" "I'm looking at a sign that says "Leicester Square" and it's right where I am, bro"

"I coulda done something to fix the Justice League script. Even if they just gave me a can of kerosene and a cigarette lighter, I could have done *something*". I had a chance to watch Justice League last Friday but decided punching myself in the face for two hours was something I didn't need to buy a cinema ticket for.

It's Daniel Pemberton! He's the composer of the scores to such films as Guy Ritchie's The Man From U.N.C.L.E remake, King Arthur : Legend of the Sword (he didn't attend the premiere) and the excellent (and still underrated even after I mentioned how underrated it was a few captions ago) Steve Jobs

How about if I only say that I have reason to believe that it's possible the product might be okay but I can't say for certain? Would still that work?" - Idris Elba was most recently in (or rather/more importantly photographed by me at) the premieres of 'Star Trek Beyond' and '100 Streets'

Idris Elba's filmography runs the gamut of Aliens sequels (Prometheus ), Marvel films ( the Thor trilogy ), Pixar (he was a voice in Finding Dory and Zootopia) - he was also excellent in 'Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom '

As part of my ongoing plan to remain sleep deprived for the foreseeable future I left my Nikon's CF card back at the office, but had the chance to go back and retrieve it and still get a spot in a late-opening pen. And it paid off : no offence, Pentax; but THIS is autofocus. (also : this is the lovely Jessica Chastain)

Pretty much exactly five years ago tonight I was at the World Premiere for "Les Miserables" and that's roundly agreed to have been one of the chilliest premieres ever (though personally I give that honour to The (first) Best Exotic Marigold premiere .

So.... that was that, and it's another entry into the slowly-crawling-towards-that-number-I-want-to-get-to Archive of Premieres. There are still two more premieres on my radar (next week) before I bring this year to a close. I'm not holding out my hopes, but I'll (try to) be there anyway (for both).

Until next time!

21 Nov - Netflix's 'The Crown - Season 2' World Premiere

November 21st, 2017.

Just like last year, the media behemoth that is Netflix did what Marvel and DC couldn't be a55ed to do in London anymore:  and hold a World Premiere (or indeed 'Premiere') for its series 'The Crown'. Crowds were surprisingly small (and it wasn't even that cold) but certainly enthusiastic - perhaps people in the UK prefer The Real Thing (which is basically living in a palace just up the road nearby) to the younger, arguably better looking thing, but I was certainly pretty sure where I wanted to be.

Here's how it went down:

It's "The Crown" - a highly regarded retelling of the life of Britain's Own royal family. Whether they're also tuning in each week desperate to see what happens next is not known.

Due to what can only be described as "amazing circumstances" I ended up with White Wristband #2 for this premiere; and due to what can only be described as peanut-headed incompetence I was asked to move from my spot to make room for people let into the pen later with competing Blue wristbands... and I lost my spot to somebody with a worse wristband than me. Well hooray for predictable weirdness,

They brought Corgis to the premiere! I've heard they can be a grouchy, bitey breed. On a separate but related topic, our pen is filled with autograph dealers, and their coats are not nearly as shiny.

The fine folks at wireimage.com, who I use primarily to help me identify people I photograph that look famous, offered that the corgis at the event were "Royal Corgis", but I don't know what that means. They were well-behaved and didn't crap on the carpet, at least.

"No matter how lively this expression there's no way you're going to be able to look at this as a photo of me once you notice the woman with the green headband and vaguely echidna-like hairdo behind me". Well..... damnit. If I was slightly less tired and it was slightly less 'the wrong side of 11pm' I might consider recropping this shot.

Technically Mother and Son, I guess.... almost every star from the series went to say hello to Billy Jenkins on his little step-stage. Sadly the passing crowd soon realised it and frequently blocked views of him.

Peter Morgan has been nominated for two screenwriting Oscars ('The Queen' and 'Frost/Nixon') and he created 'The Crown'.... in the sense of him having created something that biologically was not created by him.

"I don't know what Matt Smith is doing. Please don't ask me" Crowd density in front of my spot has gotten large enough that I've abandoned my spot to see if I can get better photos from another vantagepoint. And since people are obliviously standing on various straps of my (mostly) empty backpack, I choose to leave it where it is. I return later to find it's been removed, probably as a security threat. Sigh.

Suzanne Mackie is one of 9 Executive Producers who have EP'ed 12 episodes of The Crown. There's also a a tenth Executive producer who has only produced 10 episodes. and I bet they get laughed at a lot.

"It's hard to play The Queen in such a highly regarded series and then find myself at a train station dealing with delayed and cancelled trains and wishing I was able to have anyone found responsible executed." - are only Royals are allowed to want that? I'm asking.... for..... a friend.

So... that was that.... a premiere for a media streaming service I don't have and a series I haven't seen, and other than the heartbreak of a lost 7+yr old ratty backpack, a cheap grey scarf and two plastic rubbish bins (long story... actually it's not but it's stupid) I couldn't be more grateful for a premiere in London as the year slowly draws to a close. At present there are two more scheduled that I should be able to get to, along with 2 (possibly 3) awards evenings, before I shrug away 2017, but for now it's +1 more for The Archive of Premieres.

Until next time!

20 Sep - The 'Goodbye Christopher Robin' World Premiere

September 20th, 2017.

After Monday's 'Kingsman : The Golden Circle' world premiere, and yesterday's Last Day of London Fashion Week, I'm still not quite ready for that evening off home I've been craving. Today it was another world premiere, for a movie about A.A.Milne, the creator of Winnie The Pooh.

And much as I've always disliked Tigger and hate Roo with the fire of a thousand suns, I'm certainly a fan of the Big Four - Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Rabbit. Here's how it went down:

It's a world premiere, it's about a writer whose most famous books were written in the 1920s.... what are the odds on a rapper being onsite as the crowd warmup at this event, though?

I don't want to scare anyone, but I think I might be witnessing a kidnapping of a beloved childhood character in progress, here!

"This list is not an irrevocable list of attendees, or a guarantee that the pen you've decided to go into will allow you to photograph any of them". Well... damn.

"Quick : I need something that rhymes with "Milne" - my job is at stake, here!" - your good friend and mine Hakeem Mr Impact and DJ Thousand Acre Wood are, surprisingly in view of the marching band also on hand, in da hizzouse.

"Don't look in that direction whatever you do" - Kind of devastatingly, although I was in a spot facing the stage, the setup of that stage was crucially facing AWAY from where I was, meaning my only angle was to the backs of people being interviewed.

"What are you doing here? All the best photos to be taken at this premiere require you to specifically NOT be inside the premiere" . Well.... yeah. Director Simon Curtis is probably best known for directing 'Woman in Gold' in 2015, and 'My Week With Marilyn' in 2011.

"Come on guys, I've been in other films than 'Suicide Squad' . Doesn't anyone remember 'The Legend of Tarzan' from last year?" I forgot about Legend of Tarzan almost as soon as I'd watched it... sadly Suicide Squad was so bad it takes a heady diet of alcohol nightly to help me forget. still, it's always a good thing to be able to photograph Australia's Own Margot Robbie.

Stephen Campbell Moore's entry on imdb.com is an intriguing list of movies I haven't watched and/or don't remember him being on. Given this is his expression when I'm thinking this, I figure it's probably not to say this to him.

"You remember The History Boys but not me being the PRIME MINISTER in Johnny English Reborn ? How is that even possible?" - Johnny English remains the only premiere I've ever attended on my birthday. (and yes, it is entirely necessary for you to know this)

"Y'all sure do want a lot of things signed. Is there, like, money to be made in celebrity scrawls or something?" - Margot Robbie might indeed have figured out. I myself started to suspect when my pleasant and calm second row spot suddenly became a battleground of newly arrived people wielding large posters, bad breath, and other evidence of negligible discipline in such things as hygiene and diet.

"Look. One of our fingers is definitely pointing in the correct direction. It's your job to figure out which" - Kelly Macdonald's imdb.com entry is almost as intriguing as Stephen Campbell Moore's featuring such things as 56 episodes of Boardwalk Empire, being the voice of Princess Merida in Pixar's 'Brave' and being Helena Ravenclaw in the final Harry Potter film.

Young Will Tilston, who plays the role of 8 year old Christopher Robin in the film, has literally only this movie in his acting credits, and with those suspenders he's also better dressed than I am.... which is quite the ego destroying realisation.

Meanwhile, back in the direction of the stage....

Probably the only photo I took on the evening that I couldn't have taken from any spot other than the one I was standing in. (I wrote that sentence when I was both drunk and tired and it sounded a lot more profound at the time....)

So... that was another premiere, and despite a truly awful spot with a view of the stage that proved to be much worse than hoped, at least I came away with some photos.... enough for a journal at least!

Time for a break? Probably - but apparently there are three events tomorrow, including two allegedly at the same venue, and I suppose both of my cameras are going to be less tired than me and they're the ones doing the heavy lifting anyway.

Until next time (hopefully tomorrow)!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals, feel free to follow me on facebook at premieres.co, or on twitter at berndt2_photo, or... I dunno.... just keep heading back to the home page and obsessively press refresh, or meander though the ever-expanding archive of movie premieres for something weird. Believe me, there's enough there.
