15 Jun - The 'Dying Laughing' Premiere, Interrupted.

June 15th, 2017.

One day ago I was in the pleasant village-y surrounds of Hampstead for the appropriately-titled movie "Hampstead". Today, I already had a commitment in the evening, but if I could just swing by Leicester Square en route..?

Here's how it went down:

Once again, much like the premiere for Cain Hill, the Prince Charles Cinema has startlingly eschewed using its precious marquee space to promote its premieres and concentrated on what's really important.

"Three posters in a row is a Backing Board for posing against? Are they kidding?" based on the title of the movie, I guess it's a deliberate possibility.

"He said that? Who was he?" - an old guy I'd never seen before and wasn't talking to , apropos of nothing told me that Paul Whitehouse is one of the best standup comedians on the planet. Thanks, mysterious old man!

Paul Toogood and Bruce Payne (or possibly vice versa) are Director and Not The Director (or vice versa) of this movie/documentary.

"You'll notice I'm deadly serious at this premiere. It's a respect thing" - If this is THE Bruce Payne, then (a) he's almost but not quite Gotham City's wealthiest citizen, (b) his movie credits include Passenger 57 with Wesley Snipes and Dungeons & Dragons with Jeremy Irons.

"Could you guys cheer my man up? He's not feeling..... too...... well, you know how the rest of the joke goes"

"I just shot you. You have to fall down. That's the rules. Weren't you ever six years old?"

"You can take my photograph, but I'm not telling you my name" - a rare failure by both Getty and Wireimage : I have no idea who this is (possibly Ian.....?)

"Awesome look you're rocking there, man. Where'd you get that?" "Well, it's a white t-shirt....." "That's awesome!"

I think the guy in the polka-dotted t-shirt might have been called "Chris", but you know what? The shirt looks amazing, so I personally think it doesn't matter as much as it might otherwise.

"This IS my happy face" - getty images identifies this as Stephen K Amos, and even though I've always wished I had a middle name (I apparently don't) I now think an unspecified middle initial is somehow even cooler.

"So you guys are happy to take photos of each other while I'm standing here? That's... you know.... that's fine"

"I hope you don't mind, but I'm finding this is a particularly emotional part of this movie" - John Thomson is in this movie, as well as (per imdb) such films as Inkheart (2008), Wallace & Grommit : Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and the TV series Cold Feet

The unidentified lady above is/was absolutely right : I had to stop photographing here, and head off to the Picturehouse Central for a filmmakers talk by dual-Academy Award winning costume designer Jenny Beavan!

"you can also follow us on myspace, if that still exists....."

"Well.... no. I don't think I reused any of the costumes from 'A Room With A View' in 'Mad Max Fury Road'... but now that you mention it, I almost wish I had" - those were the two films (in 1985 and 2015) for which Jenny Beavan won her Oscars.

"That scarf you're wearing looks good. A little *TOO* good, if you ask me...."

"Of course, if she's doing her job seamlessly you won't notice the costumes in the movies she's designing for at all..... that's the paradox"

So... that was rather great. It's not every day I get to fit in 45% of a premiere before an actual (excellent) paid event, and put both into a journal. I could perhaps have called the hour-long queue for a bubblewrap matcha waffle (with matcha icecrem and mochi) a separate and third event for the evening and also covered it here... but I feel that's not really necessary.

For now, it'll be another entry into the Archive of Movie Premieres, with several more hopefully to come in the next few days.

Until next time!

ps. If you ever want to know when I post one of these journals, join lengthy queues or photograph building sites in front of cinemas, feel free to follow me on facebook at premieresdotco, or on twitter at berndt2_photo.
