21 Nov - Netflix's 'The Crown - Season 2' World Premiere

November 21st, 2017.

Just like last year, the media behemoth that is Netflix did what Marvel and DC couldn't be a55ed to do in London anymore:  and hold a World Premiere (or indeed 'Premiere') for its series 'The Crown'. Crowds were surprisingly small (and it wasn't even that cold) but certainly enthusiastic - perhaps people in the UK prefer The Real Thing (which is basically living in a palace just up the road nearby) to the younger, arguably better looking thing, but I was certainly pretty sure where I wanted to be.

Here's how it went down:

It's "The Crown" - a highly regarded retelling of the life of Britain's Own royal family. Whether they're also tuning in each week desperate to see what happens next is not known.

Due to what can only be described as "amazing circumstances" I ended up with White Wristband #2 for this premiere; and due to what can only be described as peanut-headed incompetence I was asked to move from my spot to make room for people let into the pen later with competing Blue wristbands... and I lost my spot to somebody with a worse wristband than me. Well hooray for predictable weirdness,

Our red carpet 'host' had a small step-stage and the mannerisms of a decades-older broadway performer. Turns out he's also in the show : Billy Jenkins plays (presumably Young) Prince Charles in the show.

They brought Corgis to the premiere! I've heard they can be a grouchy, bitey breed. On a separate but related topic, our pen is filled with autograph dealers, and their coats are not nearly as shiny.

The fine folks at wireimage.com, who I use primarily to help me identify people I photograph that look famous, offered that the corgis at the event were "Royal Corgis", but I don't know what that means. They were well-behaved and didn't crap on the carpet, at least.

Currently overjoyed that there are no such things as "Royal Rottweilers"....

Unknown - both the person and the style of hat being worn. (Please send your guidance on this in the direction of this website, or its twitter , facebook , or if time is not an issue instagram, pages) (Edited to add : Alex Jennings, who plays 'David, The Duke of Windsor' (and played 'Prince Charles' in 'The Queen') - with thanks to Mo!)

Unknown, but between you and me the time for me to develop that kind of 'greying at the temples while the rest of the hair remains coloured and lustrous' style has long since passed. Genetics be a cruel mistress, yo. (edited to add : he's Greg Wise, who was in 'Sense and Sensibility' with, and later married, Emma Thompson - with thanks to Mo!)

On the plus side, genetics also means I never have to face this kind of hairstyle choice or accident (edited to admit : I don't know who this is) (edited to add : he's Philip Martin, who directed four episodes of the show - with thanks to Mo!)

"Act more in love! Act less in love! Act like you don't know each other and are being asked to act semi-intimate by total strangers shouting at you while holding cameras! Wow - you're really good at this!" - the two leads of the show - Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Prince Philip have arrived.

"You know... the Queen and Prince Philip wouldn't have listened, let alone followed, those guys' instructions. Can we go back again and ignore them?" - I most recently photographed Claire Foy at the BFI LFF premiere of "Breathe" , but she was also at the original "The Crown" premiere, wearing a dress that might passingly be called "considerably more colourful"

"I'm now ignoring everyone. Bet you're glad I went method" - at this premiere I went method as 'person not dressed formally and slightly surprised I got away with it again', though to be fair that's the role I've been playing for a while now.

"No matter how lively this expression there's no way you're going to be able to look at this as a photo of me once you notice the woman with the green headband and vaguely echidna-like hairdo behind me". Well..... damnit. If I was slightly less tired and it was slightly less 'the wrong side of 11pm' I might consider recropping this shot.

Technically Mother and Son, I guess.... almost every star from the series went to say hello to Billy Jenkins on his little step-stage. Sadly the passing crowd soon realised it and frequently blocked views of him.

"I'll have you know I graduated from the Benedict Cumberbatch School of "I'm sorry I don't have time to sign for you right now" and he called me one of his most talented students" . Vanessa Kirby plays Princess Margaret in 'The Crown'

Gillian Anderson is in The X-Files, and not The Crown. But then I'm in IT Analytics, and I'm at this premiere as well. That's part of the sparkly magic of premieres.

Peter Morgan has been nominated for two screenwriting Oscars ('The Queen' and 'Frost/Nixon') and he created 'The Crown'.... in the sense of him having created something that biologically was not created by him.

"He's so cute, and since the real Prince Philip got to 'keep' Prince Charles isn't there some kind of way I can keep him too?" - Matt Smith was a prior incarnation of the famed Doctor Who, but was also in (and fun in) 'Pride & Prejudice & Zombies'

"I don't know what Matt Smith is doing. Please don't ask me" Crowd density in front of my spot has gotten large enough that I've abandoned my spot to see if I can get better photos from another vantagepoint. And since people are obliviously standing on various straps of my (mostly) empty backpack, I choose to leave it where it is. I return later to find it's been removed, probably as a security threat. Sigh.

Suzanne Mackie is one of 9 Executive Producers who have EP'ed 12 episodes of The Crown. There's also a a tenth Executive producer who has only produced 10 episodes. and I bet they get laughed at a lot.

"Thanks y'all for showing up. And if any of you want continuity of royal succession comprised of young people who have the same names as Royals you're already familiar with but are cooler and better-looking, just write to your local Member of Parliament and start signing petitions. Not saying it'll work, but weirder things have...."

"It's hard to play The Queen in such a highly regarded series and then find myself at a train station dealing with delayed and cancelled trains and wishing I was able to have anyone found responsible executed." - are only Royals are allowed to want that? I'm asking.... for..... a friend.

"They let me be a Doctor without having a degree, and a Royal without requiring a birth certificate. I just want to say once again : this acting thing is great!"

Guy on far left of the shot has managed to use a combination of rotors, magnetism and (possibly) tides to sail his camera rig in the direction of Claire Foy.

"This is me looking pensive and wistful WITHOUT requiring a jacket. And as long as nobody near me is pulling a face to detract from my ennui, I think you'll all be affected by it."

So... that was that.... a premiere for a media streaming service I don't have and a series I haven't seen, and other than the heartbreak of a lost 7+yr old ratty backpack, a cheap grey scarf and two plastic rubbish bins (long story... actually it's not but it's stupid) I couldn't be more grateful for a premiere in London as the year slowly draws to a close. At present there are two more scheduled that I should be able to get to, along with 2 (possibly 3) awards evenings, before I shrug away 2017, but for now it's +1 more for The Archive of Premieres.

Until next time!

PS> If you ever want to know when I post one of these journals, feel free to follow me on facebook at premieresdotco, or on twitter at berndt2_photo, or on instagram at.... (a) I forget (b) I'm hardly ever on there.
