4 Oct - The BFI LFF Opening Gala Premiere for 'Breathe'

October 4th, 2017

BFI London Film Festival kind of technically started yesterday with "BFI Luminous" - a charity auction attended by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Jeremy Irons, Tom Hooper, Baz Luhrman, Sir Patrick Stewart and Joan Collins.

But today is the official opening, and it was for the movie 'Breathe'. Here's how it went down:

hey, look. it's the youtube blogging equivalent of how my website is put together! (uh... I mean... obviously I'm the CEO of a major media conglomerate and this website is its flagship....)

Given I'm in England, and the notion of 'keep calm carry on' is a national pasttime allowing no end of large organisations from rail companies to whole governments to mislead and betray their people, I'm generally pleased when people have had enough and take action. But when you're holding signs calling for the boycotting of two cinemas - Picturehouse Central and Cineworld - and your protest is outside the ODEON Leicester Square? Minimal sympathy. ... go home, guys.

"Andrew Garfield's cute. He used to be Spider-Man, you know" "So did Tobey Maguire" "Oh. Right."

"Dear Mom. Protesters are loud and irritating and might be removed by police, but the guy on the bongos is kind of cute. What do I do?"

"Are you answering my question, or are you eyeing the cute girl with a crush on a protesting bongo player?" My spot in the long main pen has no direct view to the drop-off or paparazzi cordon, so I didn't actually get a chance to photograph the stars until they got quite close. In this particular case, lead actor Andrew Garfield.

"Check it out. The main screen is amazing?" "Or are you using its semi-reflective surface to catch a glimpse of the cute girl with the crush on the bongo player?"

Andrew Garfield is perhaps best known for being the second cinematic incarnation of Spider-Man (I photographed him at premieres of both the first and the second instalment s) but he was actually very good in The Social Network and Hacksaw Ridge (neither of which had premieres)

Nitin Sawhney composed the music for the movie.... and I don't really have anything amusing to say about that because I like film music. I have no less than four composer events I've bought tickets for still coming up this year), so Respect Film Music, People!!

Photographed because he looked 'randomly familiar' subsequently this turned out to b Ben Lloyd-Hughes, who is not merely in several 'Divergent' movies (remember those?), the movie 'Me Before You' (who's premiere had its own protest) and 'Great Expectations' which had its premiere at BFI London Film Festival a few years ago.

Photographed because she looked vaguely better-looking than even Ben Lloyd Hughes, this ended up being Emily Bevan, who is also in this movie and was also in the movie 'Testament of Youth' which ALSO had its premiere at BFI London Film Festival

"It's crazy how people from this movie are all converging here to celebrate this movie at the premiere of this movie, huh? I hear it totally blows some peoples' minds"

This is William Nicholson, this movie's screenwriter. He was Oscar Nominated for best adapted screenplay for 'Shadowlands' (1993) and also best original screenplay for 'Gladiator' (2000)

"If you could draw a crown above your signature it'd be really cool. Because, you know...." - actually, according to the usually reliable imdb.com, Claire Foy is best known for being 'The Girl' in the Nicolas Cage movie 'season of the witch' and NOT for playing the lead role of Queen Elizabeth II in 'The Crown' for which she won a Golden Globe.

"I thought you were very good in that Nicolas Cage movie..." - I'm pretty sure not even Nicolas Cage thought Nicolas Cage was good in that movie.

I have just enough vestigial recollection of London Fashion Week that I would pronounce this dress 'pretty nice'... but then I wore a grey hoodie under a leather jacket at this premiere, and my word is probably not to be trusted (I was warm, though....)

"Hugging random strangers? Sure, why not!" - this film's director, the mighty Andy Serkis has finally made his way to our segment of the crowd. He's probably best known for NOT playing himself as the mo-cap actor behind King Kong, Gollum and Caesar in King Kong (2005), Lord of the Rings, and Planet of the Apes.

"No, it was NOT funny when Andy spent a whole day directing this movie in character as GOLLUM"

"Anyway, much as the bright lights and red carpet makes me feel special, this dress weighs a ton, is insured for more than I'm worth, and I believe I'm entitled to free drinks and canapes inside, so I'm gonna leave you here"

"Unless you're one out of identical OCTUPLETS, Sir, i've already signed autographs for you in several places among this crowd" . Autograph dealers have no shame... or the ability to locate soap in a standard supermarket toiletries aisle.

"I think one of them brushed or scraped against me. How long until I turn into a zombie or something?"

Along with playing the human underneath several famous CG characters, Andy Serkis has also played named characters in Marvel and Star Wars films. Which is why autograph dealers around me are alternatively singing, chanting, braying and poorly rhyming his name with any number of things to induce him to sign even more autographs. He graciously (and appropriately) declined.

"I... don't feel like it. Is there a more politically acceptable way of saying it?" "How about I tell them to shut the f--k up and imply you had nothing to do with my rogue act?" "That's perfect" This, sadly, did not happen. The guy with his back did sadly block my view of Andy Serkis waving cheerfully in our direction, though, and that wasn't appreciated.

So... that was that. Day one of... uh... I think it's day 1 of 11 days of premieres. Or day 2 of 12. I'm already tired... but my Archive of premieres gets another +1.

Until next time (tomorrow!)!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals (which is frequently during BFI London Film Festival, but less so at other times of the year) feel free to follow me on twitter at @berndt2_photo, or on facebook at premieresdotco... or frankly I'd do both because multi-platforming is cool (... though can somebody explain to me how Snapchat works?!)
