13 Sep - The 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' premiere

September 13th, 2016.

It's been a few weeks since my last "premiere", that for Final Fantasy XV Kingsglaive, and much longer since the premiere before that, for Suicide Squad in early August. But I'm back, for however brief that might be, and though I'm out of practice for this kind of thing, I did remember to bring my camera and make sure the batteries were charged..

Here's how it went down:

The venue for this premiere : Picturehouse Central, with its cool lighting, streetside aspect, and enough room for you and all your favourite friends from the Autograph Dealer community. Assuming you don't have that many friends from that community.

This movie was directed by Taika Waititi, who is off busily directing Marvel's THOR : RAGNAROK in Australia. He also directed the movie "Eagle vs Shark" which I thought was brilliant, as well as "What we do in the Shadows" which seemingly everybody but me thought was brilliant. And they remembered to give the film a logo, which is nice.

In contrast to other premieres at Picturehouse Central (including the shortest ever recorded, for "The Neon Demon" earlier this year), for this one they not only had a red carpet, but they even had an outdoor paparazzi pen!

The ratio of people here for the premiere so far is skewed towards a ratio of 1 Crew for every 1 Autograph Dealer and 0 of anyone else, but that's in part because I'm sitting inside at the cafe for now, enjoying quite a nice mocha. The Picturehouse's peach green tea 'brownie' could stand to reduce its fairly devastating sugar content, but it's nice too in case you're interested..

Eventually I headed outside, and.... I don't want to panic anybody, but it's been so long since my last premiere that this is kind of what my level of comfort with my equipment is like right now.

My position for the moment is pretty frikkin' amazing, but as I'm not a recognised professional photographer the likelihood I'll be able to keep it once this thing starts is about zero.

"We're not in the movie, but we can do a plausible kiwi accent good enough to fool you guys into photographing us."

There was an Attendees List for this event, but the authorised photographers were guarding it fairly jealously. I'd like to think that's because premieres.co's website's global reach is now sufficient for what I represent to be both respected and feared. (woohoo!!)

"I am a Lannister, madam, and I don't have to button up my shirt if I don't want to" - Charles Dance is now arguably best known for playing Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones.

Sam Neill is in this movie, and not only was he the lead actor portraying Dr Allan Grant in Jurassic Park (and also the third film which everyone declines to acknowledge), but he was in the excellent Australian movie "The Dish"

This is the first event I've photographed Sam Neill at, and between him, and photographing Jeff Goldblum for the first time (at the Independence Day Resurgence Train Unveiling) and director Steven Spielberg (at the premiere of The BFG), it's been a big year for Jurassic Park alumni. I'd trade them all for composer John Williams, though...

"I didn't say they looked like Turkeys, I just said they didn't look particularly scary" - Julian Dennison appears to have survived the autograph dealers who swamped Sam Neill when he first arrived, and are salaciously eyeing him right now.

The usual level of sophisticated restraint we've come to expect at London premieres. (the crush when Sam Neill first arrived was considerably more 'impressive' but since that lapse, Security have installed a much more impenetrable rope-based barrier)

Random arrival, and still possibly sporting the toothpick he rocked at the Wrath Of The Titans premiere lo those years ago, it's Liam Neeson! He's not in the movie, but he was pretty convincingly intimidating in the 'Taken' films it's probably not worth restricting his access..

So.... that was that. And as the countdown to BFI London Film Festival continues unabated, there might still be one or two premieres to go before then. For now, though, it's another premiere for The Archive of Movie premieres, now over 350+ in length.

Until next time!
