27 Oct - The 'Starfish' Premiere

October 27th, 2016

It's only been three days since the confusion and betrayal of the Dr Strange.... whatever it was, but London has picked itself up, dusted itself off, and a small cinema in Mayfair proceeed to show what a premiere without Red Carpet or barriers could be if it wanted.

Here's how it went down:

Curzon Mayfair. Sometimes they close down the road for a premiere (as with 'The Light Between Oceans' last week), sometimes they don't. And sometimes when they don't, they put barriers up.... and sometimes they don't (sometimes you can't say for sure whether a premiere is on at all, which is why the writing above the cinema is so important)

I'm one of three people here at the moment, so I have time for 'art' shots that aren't blurry for once.

"Oh, dear. These people lounging around a cinema aren't going to negatively affect property values here, are they?"

But hark, which light through yonder cobblestone driveway shows? It is a Merc, and stars are the contents. (Either that, or it's just the locals going out for champagne for their butlers or caviars for their cats or something)

That's... actually kind of an impressively sized list of attendees for a movie that I hadn't even heard of until they announced the premiere three days ago (I travel light and am capable of deploying myself at short notice with only occasional repercussions on fragile friendships...)

Could be a fellow fan of slightly italicised font writing on building exteriors. I should probably introduce myself, I think... then realise that taking not one but two DSLRs in the direction of a woman using a mobile phone to take a photo might be considered arrogant.

OMG : This premiere (and hence its journal) has cute puppy dog content!!  Between this and Jenna Coleman / Martin Freeman further below I'm sure to go viral. Or... you know... this journal might.

The movie 'Starfish' is based on the true story of Tom and Nicola Ray, the former of whomcontracted septicaemia and subsequently had both arms, both legs and part of his face amputated. Amazingly, the stamford mercury article reporting on the film still notes that the film is not merely "a simple story of bad things happening to good people". I should probably stop complaining about how much Monday's "Doctor Strange" 'Thing' sucked.... but I think I have low blood pressure and therefore it's anger that keeps me going most days. (I should probably also not complain about that..)

Director Bill Clark has only one other imdb credit to his name, but that film (back in 2007, which is quite the gap) does not have the 9.2 rating that this movie currently has on that site.

"It's okay, Bill. A 'selfie' is what all the kids want, now. And according to the US Surgeon General there's no evendince that they're not perfectly harmless." "They said that about cigarettes too, Fred."

Laura Haddock and I shared a moment at the BFI London Film Festival premiere of 'Their Finest' but it looks like it might have meant more to me than her.

I photographed his other half Sherlock at The Premiere That Dare Not Speak Its Name Or Call Itself A Premiere, and now less than a week later I'm photographing Martin Freeman, who plays Dr Watson!

Another random (and if I may say Even Prettier) attendee - the lovely Jenna Coleman, last photographed by me at the premiere of 'Me Before You' (also at the Curzon Mayfair). And here she is, seemingly falling for the more obvious charms of Mo, my premiere sensei/guru who might possibly be not as much retired as he has been over the past year

"Wait, you're THE Mo? Shouldn't I be wanting to have a selfie with YOU?" Even though Luke Treadaway's acting credits include Attack the Block, Clash of the Titans and Unbroken, it is possible that he's less influential in a cosmic sense.

Button-up coat and polka-dotted shirt. I'm not going to bother mentioning what I'm wearing, because from the months of October to probably March each I wear variations on the same theme to premieres (and the other months I take off the jacket and don't wear a beanie). It guarantees nothing so much as staving off hypothermia and showing absolutely no acknowledgement to the czars of fashion.

Joanna Froggatt (left) is best known for being in Downton Abbey, and possibly for using her ?boyfriend? as a human shield to dazzle passing tourists and bystanders.

According to imdb (and my vague recollection) Joanne Froggatt was also in the movie "Filth" with James McAvoy in 2013. The guy on the right has presumaby not heard (or has heard) of that film

"No... that's fine. I'll wait for your autofocus..."

It's Lizzy Caplan! She's not in this movie, and I have not previously photographed her, AND she was in a movie I REALLY liked - 2008's "shakey cam was revolutionary and cool once" CLOVERFIELD. So this is quite the one-sided pleasure that's being experienced here.

There's no point captioning this photo. These fourteen words can't match this photo's thousand.

"It doesn't get any better than that. Or at least I hope not" - Tom Riley is best known for being in Da Vinci's Demons.. and according to imdb.com was also in one episode of Dr Who (whereas Jenna Coleman - above - was in thirty nine)

"Doctor Strange? I hear it's an Iron Man reboot" We'll see.

We'll see.

So.... that was that. A relatively early start, a relatively early finish, no red carpets or barriers, but stars happy to be there and interact - almost like we ordinary people were (guardedly) welcome to be there.

It makes a change, and obviously it makes it into my archive of movie premieres.

Until next time!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post a new journal, feel free to follow and/or like and/or tolerate me on facebook at premieresdotco, or gather the family around the twitter box, huddled and waiting for a tweet at twitter @berndt2_photo.
