06 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'A Monster Calls' Premiere

October 6th, 2016.

It's Day 2 of 12 of BFI London Film Festival, and the fact that I'm already feeling as tired as I am doesn't bode well for my stamina. But there's always things within raech stronger than oddly flavoured German Tea I have access to if it's necessary to perk myself up.

Here's how today's premiere went down:

After yesterday's glamorous opening gala for 'A United Kingdom', today it's a smaller, similarly scaled yet more intimate affair. How intimate? I'm in what amounts to The Autograph Dealer Pen. Those peoples' definition of personal space makes pengiun colonies look decadent.

"What do you mean 'a monster called and asked for his shirt back' -- I just got this drycleaned!"

It's The List for this premiere... and there is no second page! I think I've had boring nights at home alone with a longer list than that.

"Tom, I'm standing here just off the red carpet, looking pretty. And right now there's little else for me to do. Back to you in the studio"

"If a monster calls from within this rolled up carpet, I ain't unrolling it. I just vacuumed here"

One of the four attendees on the list is a producer described only as 'Helen'. Which is odd because I've just checked imdb.com and though this film has twelve (!) producers, none of them are called Helen. (edited to add : her name is Belen : 'Belen Atienza'. I'm so very tired)

Sigourney Weaver played the role of Ellen Ripley in both 'Alien' and 'Aliens' (and much of what happened after that in that series is irrelevant, so that's where I stop counting. Plus I don't know how to get that subscript '3' required to write the title of the third movie...) - she plays 'grandma' in this movie.

Sigourney Weaver has three Academy Award nominations to her credit - the ones to Working Girl and Gorillas in the Mist might be unsurprising, but the one for playing Ripley in ALIENS (1986) would be a surprise. For example... to somebody from the year 1985 when the movie hadn't been released yet.

"Oh, no. That Ghostbusters reboot didn't do so well at the box-office? Well that's a shame". Sigourney Weaver played Dana in the original Ghostbusters, and sadly was unable to resist what I assume was a lot of pleading (and a dump truck full of money) to appear as a cameo in the most recent Ghostbusters film.

"Ma'am, I know that yesterday's BFI LFF opening gala film was all about the importance of tolerance... but I can't allow pants with flares that wide on my red carpet"

"Yes, I loved ALIENS too. But some days a man's gotta make a stand for what he believes in."

"We took care of that guy. He'd been having a bad day" "Did you tell him Liam Neeson probably won't be coming?" "No. I didn't want to push him too close to the edge"

Spanish Director J.A.Bayona directed this film, as well as 'The Impossible (2012)'. Per imdb.com, he also stands to direct "Untitled Jurassic World Sequel", a title so awesome I hope they don't get some crap focus group to retitle it 'Jurassic Worlds' or something.

"But Mr Neeson, you HAVE to get out and meet the fans and do interviews! Well... when I say you 'have' to, I just mean you should. I'm not actually authorised to kick you out of the car. Come to think of it... I know a couple of decent bars nearby if you're interested" - sadly, whether inside this car (or the rolled up carpet above), regardless of being on The List and In This Film, Liam Neeson did not attend this premiere. I photographed him a few weeks ago at "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", though

"If you don't mention Pan (2015), I won't mention Ghostbusters (2016)" Lewis MacDougall plays the lead role 'Henry' in this film, and also played the role of 'Nibs' (but potentially did not attend the premiere of) 'Pan'.

"I'm not signing that. It's a poster for 'Kung Fu Panda 3' with most of the letters crossed out to spell 'PAN' "

"This pen doesn't actually work. But I'm going to indent it a bit by pressing down hard and you can fill it in later..."

Me, about three hours ago : Because I literally have nothing else to photograph right now. Me, about three hours later : I stand by that guy's decision.

"Why are you asking a kid like me about the implications of the Brexit process? I don't think even the politicians talking authoritatively about it know anything. Also : watch this movie. I hear it's pretty good"

"I'm disappointed none of you are getting me to sign posters of 'copycat' from 1994. Me and Harry Connick Jr worked really hard on that, even if funco didn't make any of those Pop figurines for it"

So... that was that. Needless to say, it joins many other entries on the web-based trophy wall I call my 'archive of movie premieres'... and needless to say I hope there are plenty more to come in the next week.

Until next time!
