07 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'La La Land'... thing

October 7th, 2016.

I kind of don't want to call this one a premiere, given the two BIG names on the BIG poster - Emma Stone (last photographed at 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2') and Ryan Gosling (last photographed at 'The Nice Guys') were not attending. However, it was an event and the director, producers and one (two?) stars of the movie did attend.

Here's how it went down:

This movie was not without its protests. I don't know what about. Seems wherever there's a crowd, there's another crowd willing to shout at it.

It's a list with seven names on it, none of them Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone or (perhaps) the delayed-from-yesterday's-A-Monster-Calls-premiere Liam Neeson.

"He has more hair, but I'm more cheerful" - Jordan Horowitz is one of this film's ELEVEN producers. I'm not sure how you produce a movie with (say) only three or four producers these days. (My journals are produced by four potplants and the contents of my fridge)

Possibly Marius De Vries, this movie's executive movie producer.... or possibly somebody sick of being mistaken for him.

"at least one of you guys could offer to loan me a t-shirt rather than simply stare" - Sonoya Mizuno is in this movie, and was also in the brilliant Ex Machina.

Oneof producer Fred Berger's more surprising credits on imdb is as an intern on 'The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)', a movie that me and the security dude on the left thought was a pretty awesome movie.

"That guy over there wants to challenge you to an arm-wresle. Not sure what you want to do about that" - this movie's director Damien Chazelle, who also directed the brilliant 'Whiplash' (and attended its BFI LFF premiere two years ago)

"The last ten minutes of '10 Cloverfield Lane' were just as important as the first hour and a half. Just in a different way, is all" - I was quite surprised to learn that Damien Chazelle also wrote the screenplay to that film, probably one of my top 3 films this year (it hasn't been a great year for movies, but that movie was great)

"Remake 'Whiplash' as a silent movie? Sounds cool - you do it!"

Meanwhile, on another plane of importance entirely : a stardown.

I don't know who this is. (edited to add : Neil Pearson, antiquarian book dealer and arguably better known for being in TV shows like Drop the Dead Donkey, Between the Lines and All The Small Things - with thanks to alexcatalps)

So... that was a premiere, or a 'thing' or something. Good news is : there's another one in (checks watch) as little as two hours. Might grab something to eat first, and park this one in the 'Archive of Premieres' ... until then!

ps. if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here (or demand that I add you to my mailing list by emailing me at bernd.talasch@optusnet.com.au).
