18 Oct - The "I, Daniel Blake" - People's Premiere

October 18th, 2016.

There is no denying that this website takes a flippant and jovial tone when discussing the magic and majesty of all that the Hollywood studio system heaves out at a generally bored yet easily impressed public. To celebrate that, I even adopt the same tone for 'real' movies made by 'real' directors that tell 'actual' stories about life, and love, and humanity.

But today's film "I, Daniel Blake" is the kind of movie about which fun isn't really easily made, not least of which because it was attended by protesters who read aloud the names of 105 people who died in Britain due to being denied welfare benefits, they being 'the tip of the iceberg'. It's a cruel, commercially-focussed world we live in, and all the gloss and sexyness does is distract most people from it. It's not funny, and even if I got drunk posting this I doubt it would get any less unfunny. So I'm going to try to tone it down. If I fail, I apologise

Here's how it went down:

This movie won the Palm D'Or in Cannes this year, so I'm guessing it makes its point fairly well. And I'm a default-pessimist, so I'm going to assume it'll change nothing anyway.

"Smile! Or... you know... adopt an appropriate demeanour" - yeah.... this isn't that kind of premiere.

Probably should have taken down the signs for the movie 'Storks'...?

But.... but.... Iron Man is a billionaire. He'll save us, right?

"You can watch this movie and maybe things will change, or maybe they won't. Or if you DON'T watch this movie, maybe things will change, or maybe they won't. But rest assured that the kind of people who are happy with the way things are, are less likely to change them, than those who are not."

So... that was a premiere. For a genuinely serious movie promoted in a sobering way that, perhaps not even "The Theory of Everything" or "The Danish Girl" quite managed. I left before Jeremy Corbyn showed up.

And it's another premiere for the Archive of Movie premieres.

Until next time!

ps. if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook at premieresdotco. (or both!)
