6 Jun - The 'Independence Day : Resurgence' Train Unveiling

June 6th, 2016.

When I learned about a week ago that there had been a photocall in Sydney for the 20-years-later Independence Day sequel, I did a quick search online for whether (or why) there would be (or wouldn't be) one in London. I mean, I've seen the trailer : they frikkin' ruin the city Iive in - so where's the compensatory premiere??

The answer is : there isn't one. But hidden among the more unusual corners of The Web was not merely a rumour, but a full press release talking about a Virgin Train unveiling, today, at Euston Station, to publicise the film.

Because, you know. Trains. In a science fiction story about aliens.

Here's how it went down:

In the centre of Euston Station's arrivals concourse we're keeping a prisoner of war on display. I'm not sure the Geneva Convention gives out high-fives (or whatever) for this kind of behaviour... but then again, I'm pretty sure the ID4 aliens never signed up to that treaty.

"Seriously, guys. I'm sorry I travelled without a valid Oyster Card, but in all I think your punishment for fare evasion is needlessly harsh and humiliating...."

The event itself was held at Euston Platform 16, which was blocked off by security, black hoardings, and media accreditation requirements. I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed that companies like Virgin Media think that it's cool to take the "public" out of "publicity". But mainly because right here and now, them not doing so would be kind of awesomely in my favour.

It's Jeff Goldblum!! I've never photographed him before, whereas I have photographed both of this event's other two attendees - Liam Hemsworth (at one of several "Hunger Games premieres") and director Roland Emmerich (at the "Anonymous" premiere way back in the day)

Jeff Goldblum is best known for any one of famed performances in movies such as The Fly, the first Independence Day and Jurassic Park. The last one in particular introduced the world to Jeff Goldblum's Amazing Laugh, the remix of which I'm listening to as I'm typing this

So there I am, standing at the service entrance on-ramp, photographing the goings-on. Or, as the nearby trio of armed police cheerfully mused "on any other day we'd be asking you what you were doing, but today it's fairly obvious". Woohoo! I'm probably not on any major threat database (except for all the usual ones, I mean!!)

"So here I am, walking by myself, talking to a guy too far away from me. That's... not entirely choas theory. But it is weird."

"I loved you in 'Zambezia!!!!" - I was all set to admit that I knew of no movies outside Wes Anderson films that Jeff Goldblum had been in since The Lost World and Independence Day in 1996. Fortunately, imdb reveals he's been in TWENTY TWO MOVIES (number heard of : about four), as well as TWENTY appearances on TV and half a dozen computer games. So.... well done him, and thank you to The Internet Movie Database.

"These people over here respectfully ask if they might capture your image on their camera sensors for the purpose of media usage?" "I note one or two have decided not to wait for my permission...."

I'm being smiled at by Jeff Goldblum. Or perhaps my Nikon 80-200mm is. It's a pretty great lens, very worthy of amiable cheer.

Australia's Own Liam Hemsworth may unfairly be better known for being actor/brother/Norse Demigod Chris Hemsworth's brother, but Liam did play the male lead who was implausibly NOT chosen by Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss in The Hunger Games.

I don't get it. KATNISS chose PEETA over This GALE? Inconceivable. Though to be fair she fails to choose a lot of guys who would want to go out with her.

"The aliens couldn't make it, unfortunately. I think they were detained for exceeding the duty free allowance on any number of things they couldn't get on their homeworld"

Roland Emmerich's career in demolitions has seen him destroy most or much of New York three times (Godzilla, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) and in all likelihood flood it or what was left (2012). I'm not sure whether America will let him travel there anymore.

"I'm sorry I destroyed all of America's favourite monuments, many of them more than once, in my movies. But this time it's LONDON'S turn!!" Oh, great. And we'd just finished cleaning up after the mess left by 'London has Fallen'...

"We're still looking for other sponsors. We've got Virgin for official train travel partner, but if you know of a camera, cap or carpet business that wants to get onboard, let us know!"

"Legally, we're obliged to say We've Got A Train To Catch, but truth is we brought our own limos and the mini-bars are already excellent."

"You got a coke can?" "Why... you want to shoot it off a Virgin Train whose shields you've disabled?" "No, I'm just thirsty, junior"

Meanwhile, back in the main concourse... "Would you stop staring at my a55 and get me out of here???"

So... that was rather enjoyable. And I would like to give thanks to the nice security guy who took pity on my distant position and invited me to quickly join the far edge of the ramp used by the paparazzi : the last half dozen or so photos couldn't have been taken without that bit of kindness :)

So, with another premiere for The Archive of Movie Premieres, that's it for a little while, premiere-wise. As at right now, the only upcoming premiere I know about is for The Absolutely Fabulous premiere at the end of the month. I guess I'll try to find something to do in the meantime.

Until next time!

PS. If you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here. You can also share this journal, comment on it below, or smuggle me into events I technically shouldn't be in out of the kindness of your heart .(I'm fairly discreet, long 80-200mm lens notwithstanding).
