16 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'Free Fire' Closing Gala

October 16th, 2016.

So... that's BFI London Film Festival for 2016. Twelve days of it, and amazingly I found time to go to something every day (and on two days it was three events). And do I ask for much in return? No... just a spot to stand with my camera(s) and some light to steer them by. And some sleep... which I intend to have some time around next Thursday.

But for now, for the last time for BFI London Film Festival 2016, here's how it went down:

Free Fire. Guess nobody's paying for matches any more. And the global warming documentary with Leonardo DiCaprio (which I didn't stay in town for) was yesterday.

"I'm guessing you've all photographed me already previously?" - Incredibly, Free Fire is the THIRD movie this BFI LFF (after 'The Birth of a Nation' and 'Nocturnal Animals') featuring actor Armie Hammer.

Cilian Murphy isn't just a sharp dresser and snappy striding celeb, he's in this movie as well as such notable films (and premieres) as those for 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'In The Heart of The Sea'.

I don't know who this is.

I don't know who this is.

I also/ still don't know who this is.

"Has anyone seen my chainsaw?" - Sam Riley was rather good in the surprisingly under-rated "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", which was released earlier this year.

"Sam Riley wants my hat? Well, he can't have it : it looks awesome on me" - the awesomely named Babou Ceesay is in this movie, and was also in (but not at The Premiere Of) the excellent "Eye in the Sky"

Ben Wheatley (and possibly, if memory serves, also Ben Wheatley's shirt) was/were at last year's BFI LFF premiere of "High-Rise".

It totally escaped me that Jack Reynor was the car racing boyfriend of Mark Wahlberg's daughter in Transformers : Age of Extinction. I've pretty much mentally flushed myself of all memories of that movie, but I'm still haunted by the inclusion of his speech attempting to justify the pre-laminated statutory consent laws.

"I don't remember that movie at all". Would I was so lucky.

Sadly it looks like the world (and possibly fans of awesome Daft Punk soundtracks) appears to have now been definitively robbed of a third TRON movie that might have seen Cillian Murphy unleash as some kind of demonic uber-villain, justifying his small role in Tron Legacy.

Tom Davis represents everyhing I most wish I had as a premiere photographer : height. (and he does wear a tie and beard very well)

"wassup, peeps?" - Enzo Cilenti is in this movie, as well as a huge array of movies I've seen that I can't recollect him from, including but not limited to The Martian, The Theory of Everything, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Man Who Knew Infinity, The Theory of Everything, Kick-Ass 2 and the Rum Diary. It's like he's a chameleon... or, like, a really talented actor, or something.

"He's a man who might have been in even more movies than he's credited for. Indeed, there's film students right now looking through the entire Hollywood back-catalogue to see if he's been in EVERY movie ever made"

"I knew I'd seen him somewhere, and not just on our set and this premiere here!!"

"This guy suspects I might be famous. I think he means to interview me!" - Michael Smiley might not recall, but he is actually in this movie.

A bit like Enzo Cilenti, a quick trip up the road to the online offices of imdb.com reveals that Michael Smiley has been in a lot of movies I've seen (and premieres I've been to) that he's either not been to or slipped by me....

It's Sharlto Copley! He's a pretty brilliant actor, and I'm pretty glad I've now photographed him after only possibly snapping him side-on at the 2010 Baftas (maybe)

I think this is a pretty great photo. Kind of wish I could leverage this into similar red carpet portraiture of (say) .... Charlize Theron? Scarlett Johansson? Emma Stone?

"Anyway, I've had enough of my soul stolen by all the photographers around. I'm going to go inside now and watch myself act and see if I can get back into character"

Elizabeth Chambers (aka. Mrs Armie Hammer) is about to draw a quick cartoon for my master and sensei Mo, who made a random but welcome and long-awaited return to premieres. Welcome back, Mo! (un-retire already!)

"He's going to create a gallery of celebrity artworks. You've got to stop him!! Or... you know... add to it with one of your own" (and because Mo is pretty much acknowledged as having magic powers, Armie Hammer also drew a quick picture)

"He's been a feature of this year's London Film Festival with - now - THREE appearances, and we suspect he's been hanging around Leicester Square for many of the other movies he wasn't a part of. But now it's time for him - and by extension all of you - to go home, and take a rest from premieres for a while.... ...... ........ like tomorrow" See you there.

See you there.

So.. that was that. BFI London Film Festival. And for the first time, I went to an event EVERY DAY without missing one, something that my ballooning Archive of Movie Premieres thanks me for. In the absence of thunderous applause that's going to happen in bits because this journal will be read at different times in differen timezones, I'm going to go and get some sleep.

Until next time / year / tomorrow!

ps. if you ever want to know when I post a new journal, feel free (no... feel OBLIGED) to follow me on Facebook at premieresdotco, or on Twitter at berndt2_photo (or both... I suppose).
