08 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'Elle' Premiere

8th October 2016

Just a few hours ago I was standing on a wall, taking photos of Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck for what turned out to be the 'International' premiere of "Manchester By The Sea". And now... a few hours later I'd shifted position to see what was what for the premiere of "Elle". Because sleep? Science agrees you don't need it.

Here's how it went down:

The BFI Embankment Cinema is a fairly solid looking albeit temporary structure built for the festival. It looks friendly, and there's even a bar and a couple of refreshment and snackfood trailers near it (including Mama's Jerk Chicken)

BFI's Embankment cinema looks a whole lot more menacing a few hours later when the sun has set.

Here is a picture of half the list of attendees for this event. Looks like I might have to pad this journal with trivialities and 'zany' art shots

Oh look. A zany art shot.

It's not just about the intense looks from the two cameramen or the dude behind them with his mobile phone... it's also about the guy in the background looking like the rebooted Zachary Quinto Mr Spock from Startrek. Or it could be the cold and the sugar rush from the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. But it's probably the cold.

Our first attendee was actually Director Paul Verhoeven (who this isn't), but despite his height and distinctive silvery hair, he quickly started doing interviews at an angle I couldn't photograph him. This, however, is Isabelle Huppert

"As I recall, you sought me out to be in one of my films after you saw Total Recall back in 1990" "That's not how I remember it" "Was it Hollow Man in 2000, maybe?"

The crush in the media pen might have even exceed that of the dealer-filled public pen (but only because at this point nobody was signing (or threatening to sign) any autographs.

"So I hear 'Huppert' is actually pronounced like the private car rental service. Isn't that odd?" "It's French" "Oh, right..... sorry"

Despite Isabelle Huppert's long and illustrious career, I've seen only three movies to date. One was "I heart Huckabees" which I hated, one was "Amour" which was amazing and never ever want to see again, and the other was "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby : Them" where I don't remember her at all.

So... that was that. Two premieres in a day for the second day in a row, something that would (had I any desire to do the same tomorrow) require me to spring between two venues to photograph two premieres starting half an hour apart. I'm not sure I'll be doing that.

I'll probably be doing that.

It's actually hard to believe this is only day FOUR of twelve days of this festival, but my Archive of Movie premieres certainly isn't complaining.

Until next time!

ps. if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here (or demand that I add you to my mailing list by emailing me at bernd.talasch@optusnet.com.au). You can also share this journal, comment on it below, or recommend an effective power-nap regime that might help me catch up on sleep.

Postscript : the next day, I went to the Directors Screentalk with Paul Verhoeven and it was great!
