24 May - The 'Love & Friendship' Premiere

May 24th, 2016.

It's been less than a week since my last premiere, and between that one ('The Nice Guys' with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe) and this one, I'd found time for a quick international trip to bridge the gap. I'd love to be able to say it was because I scored a sweet gig shooting a Charlize Theron glamour feature for a magazine you've heard of.... and as long as I'm not asked any legal type questions that's what I'm going to claim.

And now I'm back in London, and there's a premiere, albeit a small one. Here's how it went down:

When it's a premiere at the Curzon Mayfair, they typically don't close down the busy side-street, meaning witches hats are laid down and if I'm really unlucky cabs and delivery vans block the other lane and my attempted photo of (say) Kate Beckinsale.

I don't suppose anyone's going to high-five me for timing the shot just as the bit of stray carpet was casually and coolly tossed aside by the carpet layer. (I'll just be sitting here at my desk in my apartment, holding my right hand up while waiting for that high-five....)

"How'd you get here?" "Rode my llama. You?" "Unicycle" "Should be safe to tie both up here, then...."

I have to admit I haven't previously heard of Jenn Murray, but she's been in at least two movies I've been at the premiere of, last year's "Brooklyn" and "Testament of Youth" from the year before that. She's in this movie, and her dress? Makes interesting use of negative space.

I also haven't previously heard of Emma Greenwell (but then in my defence I don't watch much TV and I'm yet to get around to watching the no doubt amazing "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies". Still, thanks to the power of subliminal advertising, I now feel like Lebanese Food. I don't know why.

"I can stand here looking pretty, or I can carb-load with free popcorn inside. Where it's air-conditioned. And I can sit down. Let's say I'm evaluating my options...."

Kate Beckinsale arrives, and I guess I'd better switch to rapid-fire since all number of DHL delivery trucks are threatening to start a blockade of the whole area...

Kate Beckinsale is best known for being in the Oscar-nominated "Underworld" vampire movies (Jeb Oscar has an annual competition for vampire and werewolf-themed movies, near as I can make up at short notice), though I did previously photograph her at the premiere of the "Total Recall" reboot premiere, and incongruously perhaps last year's Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

"Let's just say I'm gonna stand here until you all confirm you've made me look pretty...." Meanwhile, hordes of autograph dealers are making all kinds of promises they're not capable (or legally advised) to make.

I know that you can program the Nikon to alter the degree to which it will dynamically alter autofocus if something moves between you and your target, but come on NIKON - could you at least dynamically resolve not to ever drop focus on whatever the prettiest person in the current field of view??

Man with Machine Gun is all : "I'm defending Democracy and surplus Witches Hats over there, unless or until one person so much as thinks of badmouthing my homegirl Jane Austin in this crib". Aiight.

Kate Beckinsale does what nobody else has had the courage or audacity to do at this premiere - cross the road and sign a few autographs. All of a sudden, autograph dealers spontaneously materialise in our pen and start honking their strange language...

Director Whit Stillman exits his vehicle microseconds before my view of him is blocked by yet another vehicle. I'm sure this happens in Cannes and Hollywood too...

"Those witches hats on the road are there for a reason, and no you can't have one". Director Whit Stillman got an Oscar nomination (the Academy Oscars, that is) for best screenplay for 1990's "Metropolitan"

Meanwhile, the world of fashion has moved on to tassels on shoes. Next stop : iPhone cases. Mark my words, it's going to happen. Have you seen how many London Fashion Week Journals I've put together over the years? I've got street cred. And a hairstyle I haven't changed since the early 2000s....

The amazingly-named Morfydd Clark was ALSO in "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", And I've just realised that just like P&&J was based (possibly entirely faithfully) on a Jane Austin novel, so is THIS movie : Jane Austen's novella "Lady Susan". Yo, people : we got a Marvel Cinematic Universe of Jane Austen movies happening!!!

"Screw your DSLRs, I'll take this photo and email it to y'all?" - Tom Bennett, like so many at this premiere, is somebody I'd never heard of prior to this premiere. Big thanks to Getty for their diligence in tagging their photos so I can... you know.... borrow the fruits of their hard labour.

"Jeff, I think they allocate seats at premieres these days....." "Just making sure, Mom...."

So... that was that. There's another premiere, same time same place (different movie) tomorrow, but that one might be a bit trickier since there's rumours somebody pretty big from Game of Thrones might attend. There isn't really anything bigger than that show on this planet. And the Curzon Mayfair can't exactly host huge premieres without affecting the ability of London cab drivers to make opportunistic shortcuts through Mayfair or allow rich twenty-somethings to cruise the streets in expensive cars with foreign number plates. So who knows if anyone makes the Big Call to tell the Young and the Privileged to take the tube if they want to get somewhere.

Until then (or perhaps not), it's another entry for my "Archive of Movie Premieres", along with its last couple of entries, premieres for 'The Nice Guys', 'X-Men : Apocalypse' and 'The 2016 Television Bafta Awards'.

PS. If you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here. You can also share this journal, comment on it below, or attempt to use the email address below to add me to your mailing list for blood diamonds, virility drugs or whatever... but I'd prefer it if you didn't.
