1 Feb - The 'Pride & Prejudice & Zombies' European Premiere

February 1st, 2016

In this day and age, I think we're all comfortable with the knowledge that when Jane Austen wrote her literary works, much like George Lucas with the Star Wars prequels, technological limitations of the day prevented the full realisation of the ambitious dreams of having The Undead feature in her novels.

Thankfully those limitations seem to have been overcome, and as I understand it, audiences of today will finally get a chance to watch the story of 'Pride and Prejudice' unfold as its author intended.

Here's how the premiere went down:

Premiere pre-amble gives me a chance to trial the panorama function on my iPhone. Just like Jane Austen would have wanted.

"We at the Jane Austen Literary Society are not amused at this abomination". I agree. In my opinion 'Northanger Abbey' was a much, MUCH more boring book and it definitely should have had a zombie apocalypse to liven it up.

Crowd numbers for this premiere were pretty high for a partial adaptation of a novel published in 1813. Still... it stars among other people a former Dr Who in the form of Matt Smith.

"Yoyoyoyoyoyoyo people. I got some tickets here for anyone who can rhyme a word with Zombie. ... Please. Somebody help me out here .. I've got nothing". Mr Impact and DJ Virulent Outbreak attempt to warm up the cold-blooded crowd.

The director of this film is a man with the unlikely and awesome name of Burr Steers. His imdb reveals he's directed not one but TWO movies I've been to the premiere of : the Zac Efron starring vehicles "17 Again" and "Charlie St Cloud" - the latter one of the few premieres I attended in Sydney, Australia

This gentleman's first name, based on crowd screaming, is "Julian", and according to imdb there are two 'Julian's attached to this film : Julian Day the costume designer, and Julian Morson in the Camera and Electrical Department. Or... he could be somebody else.

Ellie Bamber is in this movie. That's all I've got for now. But she plays young Lydia Bennett.

"Would I take off my tiara to fight off a horde of zombies? Of course not - I look fabulous with it on". Also, I think Jane Austen would have wanted it that way.

"I think I've managed at best a one-fifth of a Windsor Knot....can you help me with ths?" Charles Dance and his frankly ludicrous tie (?) play Mr Bennett in the movie.

Charles Dance is best known for playing the vicious (yet arguably very cool) -and arguably dearly departed- Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones.

"Babes... hand me my knuckledusters.. I think they've followed us to the present day." Sam Riley is in this movie, and has probably misjudged the unholy undead for living autograph dealers in a nearby public pen.

" 'Maleficent'? Yeah... I also pronounce it Male-Efficient". Sam Riley was also in that Angelina Jolie movie, whose premiere I missed and which I still have successfully avoided watching.

Along with a role in the sadly (seemingly) forgotten movie 'In Time' and the more easily and better- forgotten Tim Burton movie 'Dark Shadows' Australia's Bella Heathcote is in this film in the role of Jane Bennett. (I gotta ask... just exactly how many Bennetts ARE there in Pride and Prejudice??)

"Hand me my chainmail jacket" "Those aren't real zombies, silly...." "True, but I'm about to head into the autograph dealer area and I dont' want to take any risks"

"Jeff... grab my samurai sword and pass it over here..." Yet another member of the seemingly infinite family of Bennetts has arrived in the form of Millie Brady, who plays Mary Bennett in the film.

"Not so worried about the women staggering around in the white dresses.... however could you check on the guy behind me on the far right? He's worrying me a bit". Douglas Booth has arrived, to the screams of women who are rehearsing for Matt Smith.

"What about this one next to me? Do I have to wait for her to take a chunk out of my shoulder before I grab that axe over there?"

"No matter how much you deny it, I've checked imdb and you were DEFINITELY in Jupiter Ascending". He certainly has the Abrasax family ten-thousand-light-year stare going for him...

"As you can see, girls, I'm living your dreams and am hugging Matt Smith. Now... who wants to hug me and maybe catch some stray skin cells?" Jack Whitehall is not in this movie, and/but I last photographed him last year at the premiere of "Bad Education"

Great news for anyone who drew the surname "Bennett" in the Jane Austen Zombie Apocalypse Survival office pool - Suki Waterhouse plays yet *another* member of that family -Kitty Bennett - in this film.

"Okay... maybe the sheepskin bathrobe wasn't the best choice at a glamorous premiere such as this. But it's winter in London people...". Three of the four layers I'm currently wearing agree with Suki Waterhouse on this.

Lily James plays the lead Miss <insert name of female> Bennett in this film. She's also Matt Smith's girlfriend AND was Cinderella in Disney's Live Action remake of Cinderella last year

Sidenote : I last photographed Suki Waterhouse, wearing brown hair instead of blonde, at the premiere of "Love, Rosie" back in 2014, when the Odeon West End still existed, instead of being the hole in the ground it currently is. Times are changing.... and I'm not just talking about adding zombies to literary classics.

So... that was an interesting enough affair. I quite enjoyed it, the cast, and the weirdly rock'n'roll heavy soundtrack they've elected to work into their adaptation of Jane Austen's work.

I'm sure that's what she would have wanted.

Anyway, it's another entry for "The Archive of Movie Premieres", hopefully to be joined by another later this week and another early next week, before the Baftas chew up a whole weekend mid-February and hopefully don't spit out me as a remainder.

PS. If you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here

Until next Time!
