27 Sep - 'The Intern' European Premiere

September 27th, 2015.

.... and so for the last time before London Film Festival descends on this city in mid-October, it's back to Leicester Square for one of those Sunday premieres I always say I don't like but typically, like last week with "Pan" and a few months ago for "Mission Impossible Rogue Nation", I end up going to anyway.

This one featured not one but two Oscar winners, and a crowd much more charged than usual for either (or both) - Anne Hathaway and Robert de Niro. Here's how it went down:

My wrist bore #86 for the queue to be part of this thing. However, due to the way they loaded the public pens I actually found myself in the second row of a pen I didn't want to be, surrounded by fans who were a little bit more manically pro-AnneHathaway than I'm used to.

To my right, more crushed people, and passersby told to move on but curiously disinclined to do so.

With about 2.5hrs to go, I was hoping I wouldn't have to acknowledge only limited fandom for Robert De Niro's films. Sure, Taxi Driver. But I've never quite been able to appreciate The Godfather movies, The Fokkers movies, Shark Tale, or Analyze This/That so much...

Random person poses. I do not object.

"She's played a prostitute, a catburglar, an astronaut, a princess (twice), a queen (once), and a bird in an animated feature (twice). And now she's Robert De Niro's boss. But is she disappointed about how everyone always forgets she played Agent 99 in the 'Get Smart' reboot? Let's find out"

Might possibly remember me from my presence at the premieres of The Dark Knight Rises, One Day, Les Miserables and/or Interstellar...or might just be wondering about the dude next to me manically waving a framed picture NOT OF ANNE HATHAWAY at her.

Suddenly it seemed like everyone stopped and stood for a national anthem I couldn't hear. I had my headphones on pretty loud, but I think there was a Rugby Union match on at the same time.

"This movie looks frikkin' awesome. And I'm not just saying that as the person who wrote and directed it. Well... not only that." Nancy Meyers received an Academy Award nomination in 1981 for Best Original Screenplay for 'Private Benjamin and previously directed 'Something's Gotta Give' and 'The Holiday'

"Damn I hope Robert De Niro recognises me from that film we were in" "What... the one this premiere is for?" "Yeah... that one"

"Anne Hathaway? Lovely lady. She was awesome in Man of Steel" ".....?" "Just kidding. I meant Brokeback Mountain" "....?" "Check imdb. She was totally in that"

"So... Shark Tale (2004). Do you regret that?" "Not really. Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) a bit, though, maybe"

"Robert De Niro, people. Do him a favour and get him to sign some posters from movies he did in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s too, huh?" I mostly saw Taxi Driver, Godfather II and a little bit of Raging Bull. Doesn't anybody remember him from Tarantino's 'Jackie Brown'?

Unlike the only other time I photographed Robert De Niro (at the 'Righteous Kill' premiere back in 2008) he didn't really sign autographs. At this premiere, in contrast, he didn't do any interviews except the one he did on stage.

So... that was a larger and more frantic premiere than I might have wanted for a Sunday I'd otherwise have (cough) productively spent watching movies rather than photographing the stars of one.

Stil... last one for a little while, and as always its another entry for 'The Archive of Premieres' - I've attended slightly over 300, now... (I'm still unsure whether that's amazingly cool or something I should probably not brag about), and the last couple of which included 'Legend' with Tom Hardy, The 'Pan' World Premiere with Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara, 'Sicario' with Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro, and 'The Martian' with Matt Damon, Ridley Scott and the lovely Jessica Chastain.

Until next time!

ps. Finally, if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, insult a world power, or denigrate the country I'm based in, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook at premieresdotco.
