19 Aug - The 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl' event

August 19th, 2015.

It's been almost a month since my last premiere, and as usual I've used the time tending to my truffle fields, faberge egg collection and entertaining visiting supermodels on my private yacht, if only in my fevered imagination.

For this reason, I was eager to head to the Apple Store in Covent Garden (Regent Street is being refurbished) to attend the event for the very highly-regarded movie 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl', which is sadly not getting a 'full' premiere. (Also : there's an actual premiere tomorrow for a different movie and I could use the practice). Here's how it went down:

So this is my view of the five chairs which will be occupied by three cast, one director and one interviewer. *whimper*

"Hey there, I'm RJ... but you can call me 'R' if you want" "I'm Olivia. I'm in this movie, just like you are..." "Oh, yeah"

With all four attendees seated, I can assess my luck in choosing a random chair at this event. I've got a direct view of the pretty girl, and partial view of her two fellow cast members, and a majority view of director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. That's.... actually what I would have picked.

"See how I made an effort? That's because I care, baby" "You forgot your socks, ace". This is RJ Cyler's first acting role, however I've previously photographed Olivia Cooke at the premiere of The Quiet Ones last year

"As I like to tell everyone, the secret to working with a very attractive co-worker is to show them absolutely no attention. It works every time". Totally. I'm still single after all these years (I assume that what it's meant to accomplish?).

"I remember you. You were ALSO in that movie I was in!!". I finally get my first view of lead actor Thomas Mann, arguably best known (by imdb) for being in 'Project X' and 'Hansel and Gretel : Witch Hunters'. I didn't watch the first and wanted to punch anyone who spoke to me for a good hour after the execrable "H&GWH" - and I was on a PLANE at the time.

I've had to get a bit creative with the composition of this photo.... I can shoot around people (when possible) but shooting through people is apparently still frowned upon.

Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon at far right was second unit director on the very excellent Ben Affleck-directed movie 'Argo' and has directed multiple episodes of TV shows as diverse as 'Glee' and 'American Horror Story'. Meanwhile, I'm excited that my Pentax's sometimes skittery autofocus is avoiding the contrast of the brick wall. I think Olivia Cooke's purple dress has its attention...

A bit of ducking, weaving, and luck... and I finally get all three cast members in the one shot at the one time, all looking in my general direction (confession: the dude sitting next to me had a question for the cast.....hence the eye-contact.)

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon actually provided a really good answer to the audience question of whether he had any advice for first-time feature directors, summarising to : it is very important to tell the story YOU want to tell, and not something dictated by the fashions of the day : that's the best way to differentiate yourself. Very cool. (I differentiate myself by putting my photos in virtually inaccessible corners of the internet, with no ads and negligible social media skillz... )

Additional bit of advice from. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon : don't ask people WHAT to do, ask them HOW to do things; and where possible try not to ask advice - keep your own individual style and voice. I think that's good advice all round -- though perhaps not for how wanting to popularise my particular brand of cynical, detached and weird premiere journals!

"And when all that fails, always sit next to the prettiest girl in the room" Damnit... and I've just realised the dude next to me is... well... a dude.

if it looks like Olivia Cooke is hurriedly beckoning me over, it's sadly because she's actually pointing to the emergent director to my left. Either that.... or I've just missed a great opportunity purely because I couldn't fathom a cute girl beckoning me on to a stage.

Me, internal monologue : "Wait... is it possible I might *also* be working on my first feature directorial effort without knowing it? I... guess I could be...?"

While the dude to my left heads to the stage to pose for an entirely authorised posed photo with the cast, it's actually worth noting that "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl", among other awards, won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Which is no small thing at all.

I do hope that the guy in the beret ends up winning a Bafta and/or Oscar in coming years...just so I can kick myself for not introducing myself as either onset photographer or possible freelance amateur DOP. (A girl who approached him later asking for 'his card' received the reply that he didn't have one with him as he's on holiday).

So... that's my return to celebrity photography after a bit of an unwanted absence from my hobby. Hopefully more to come, but til then I'll put it into The Archive Of Movie Premieres, along with the most recently added Mission Impossible Rogue Nation premiere, Pixar's Inside Out premiere, and the premiere of Marvel's Ant-Man.

Until next time!
