10 Dec - "The Hateful Eight" European Premiere

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

And so, for the last time this year (and the third time in three days after 'The Danish Girl' on Tuesday and 'Daddy's Home' yesterday) I'm in Leicester Square for a premiere, and to me this was the BIG one : Tarantino's Hateful Eight. The fact that this is my last premiere for the year, and not the unveiling of Disney's shiny new merchandise licensing fundraiser makes me very very happy.

And I'm a fan of Tarantino's. .... and his wasn't even necessarily the biggest name I wanted to photograph on the night.

Here's how, for the last time in 2015, it went down:

Ever since I saw my first Tarantino film (Pulp Fiction), I've watched every subsequent one in cinemas (excepting Deathproof - that was released only as a double-bill in Australia), and I've been to both his previous London premieres ('Inglourious Basterds' in 2009 and 'Django Unchained' in 2013).

It's a small list, but it's a good list, for this European premiere : Director Quentin Tarantino, along with stars of the film Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth (none of whom I've previously photographed) and... wait....  COMPOSER ENNIO MORRICONE??? This premiere just got so cool that Mister Impact and DJ Unlikeable Seven are probably grabbing themselves another blanket rather than heading down here to lay down some phat beatz or whatever.

"If he mentions the hat, I'll just DIE. Of course, if he doesn't mention the hat, I'll probably also just DIE"

My keen photographer's eye has determined that this is unlikely to be one of the five (5) men on The List of attendees for this premiere. But my camera doesn't care.

"I love that you've dressed as The Bride from Kill Bill... I just think putting O-Ren.Ishii's scalp on a keychain is a bit much. Officially, I'm saying that. Unofficially I love that too"

"When am I going to make a child-friendly film? I don't know... most four-year olds I've shown Reservoir Dogs to didn't seem to mind the violence"

"Of course I'm a fan of film media, but no I'm not going so far as hand-cranking"

"Escape from Miami? I haven't heard about that, but if the weather's nice I'll think about it". Kurt Russell is best known for being in John Carpenter's 'The Thing', a movie I apparently immediately lose credibility as a film fan by giving my honest opinion of. So I might defer doing that for now.

Tim Roth was Oscar-nominated for 'Rob Roy', but more importantly has been in two prior Tarantino films (Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs as Mr Orange). Perhaps even more importantly (for me) he's one of FOUR people I've never photographed before at a premiere who are at THIS premiere.

"Predators merch? You want me to sign that?" Walton Goggins was also in Tarantino's Django Unchained, as well as The Bourne Identity and "Cowboys and Aliens" (whose premiere he didn't attend). But yes, he was in the (I think sadly underrated) attempted reboot of the 'Predator' franchise back in 2010.

"The tie looks great, but I'm rocking the tie-less look at this premiere. Thanks, though"

This is not some random old dude walking down the carpet... this is five-time Oscar nominated, FIVE TIME BAFTA WINNING composer Ennio Morricone. Best known for his Spaghetti Western scores including 'The Good The Bad and The Ugly'.

Usually when I'm back home and editing the photos of premieres I've been to, I'll have a movie starring somebody at the premiere playing in the background. At this premiere, I'm just grabbing my iPod and putting Ennio Moriccone on. (Currently listening to : 'L'Arena' from Kill Bill vol2)

Through the magic of the nearby Sensei Mo, three of us managed to grab autographs from Mr Moriccone, who then posed for the Paparazzi... who probably had no idea who he was. Damnit... his beret has more musical talent than anyone here!

I don't know who this is, but (a) I don't care, (b) it's started to rain, and (c) I don't care.

... well, it's a Tarantino movie. Nobody was walking the red carpet barefoot, but this is at least something.

'This scarf is awesome. You'd better not post this photo in black'n'white and deprive people of the experience of seeing it' Not in this movie or associated with it, but nonetheless one of the lucky people getting to see it : director Dexter Fletcher (also spotted in the crowd, director Sam Mendes)

"Why yes, I AM technically part of the Marvel Cinematic universe. Thank you for remembering." Tim Roth played the villain in 'The Incredible Hulk (2008)', back when The Hulk was only in the 2nd of its 3 incarnations. But Tony Stark shows up at the end of that film, thus tying it into the MCU. (what... you've never heard of post-credit scenes?)

"Bye guys! I'd love to stay and sign stuff, but.... actually it's starting to rain harder and frankly, no, I wouldn't"

"It's like that thing you have so much of in England. Politeness? No. Self-deprecation? No...." "Rain?" "Yeah, that's it"

It was almost time to head out and go home.. but they kept us in the pen until the stars left (fortunately within ten minutes of entering, not after the full 3hr movie!). By then, the rain had intensified, my jacket was considerably more water-logged, and I hadn't yet discovered I'd locked my keys in the office and somebody had locked up the office..... an entirely separate adventure well outside the purview of this journal.

"But let's hear it for this guy. Nobody holds an umbrella like him, come rain, hail or shine....or at least one of those things"

So that was that... 2015's SIXTY FIRST event, by my count, including all premieres, standalone Apple store events, Award ceremonies, pretend award ceremonies... and even a singular book launch.

Will I be doing this again next year? Well, it depends, as always, but hopefully. So. For now, it's another one for 'The Archive of Movie Premieres'. And if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here

Until next Time / Year!
