09 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'High-Rise' Premiere

October 9th, 2015

BFI London Film Festival continues with day 3, one day after the frankly sub-par premiere of 'Trumbo' with Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren and John Goodman. But today was likely to be much bigger, as it featured more stars AND Tom Hiddleston.

Which is why it came as such a surprise that the public pen for this premiere was about 1/3 of the normal size Mayhem was more or less assured, in other words, and I was in that pen. Here's how it went down:

"I'm not really sure what I'm looking at, here. I'm guessing it's 'Art'?"

"I'm not really sure what I'm looking at, here. I'm guessing it's 'Art'?"

"Feel free to keep ignoring me like I don't even matter, Frank"

"Jill, am I getting old? I don't reconise even ONE of these people" The press pen gang aren't exactly wearing tuxedoes at this event, I'm noticing.

"Okay, so I signed your piece of cardboard. What have you got for me?" Director Ben Wheatley (who also directed 'Kill List' and 'Sightseers') has arrived.

"I'm the director of this thing, guys. Accordingly, I don't need a tie, or fancy shoes. In fact, I'm not even sure if these are my trousers."

"I look like a Young DUMBLEDORE?? I'm not really sure what to make of that"

People were shouting 'Stacey!!' and accordingly I was taking photographs. I'm not too discriminating when it comes to these things.

"That's the page Tom Hiddleston's going to be signing? Well... congratulations in advance, I guess". The imdb helpfully tells me that Enzo Cilenti played a Watchtower Guard in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', but possibly more importantly he played the improbably named Yezzan zo Qagga in two episodes of 'Game of Thrones'

"And I took these photos when I was in Crete two years ago. That was a good holiday". Sienna Guillory may or may not be paying attention to your holiday photos at this premiere.

"I gotta go. I have more holiday photos to look at". I photographed Sienna Guillory (and the upcoming Tom Hiddleston) mere days ago at the BFI London Film Festival-launching "Luminous" Gala event at Guild Hall.

"Wait.... Sienna's all dressed up? Enzo's wearing his scarf? Ben Wheatley's wearing pants?? Was this meant to be a formal event??" Elisabeth Moss is best known for being in 92 episodes of the TV show 'Mad Men'.

"Watch me steal this guy's car keys" Elisabeth Moss was (I thought) pretty good as Jonah Hill's girlfriend in the (probably little-remembered) movie 'Get Him to the Greek'

I think Elisabeth Moss would be very cool to have as a friend. Might track her down on facebook.

... because doing so at this event is clearly going to be impossible (note : I'm in the second row and the people in front of me are all SHORTER than I am)

"Wassup, guys?" James Purefoy is best known for being Marc Antony in the TV Series 'Rome'... and he was also in the unfairly maligned (I feel) 'John Carter (of Mars)'. And he's wearing a shirt, suit AND TIE at this event.

"Hey, babe. Wanna pose with me on the red carpet?" I have to assume that's James Purefoy's wife/girlfriend, or that's a strategy a whole lot of men on red carpets are going to be trying.

"What's my assistant doing? She's arranging my... uh..." Augustus Prew is in this film. And not just everyone gets their .... uh.... arranged on a red carpet.

"A turtle-neck is the New Tie." Not since about 2011, I would have thought.

Obviously, this premiere had one major drawcard, and his lack of early appearance increased the agitation in the female-dominated public pen I was also in. Because the later Tom Hiddleston arrives, the less autographs he can sign, selfies he can pose for, and proposals of marriage he can (presumably) reject

"I'm sorry I'm not Tom Hiddleston". Sienna Miller looks much better in that dress than Tom Hiddleston would, though, I think.

"Actually, I'm quite excited to see Tom myself. Mind if I wait over there with you guys?" I, for one, even in an already female-dominated pen, do not mind.

I have no idea what to write for this photo, however if the crush for Sienna Miller's autograph is about 1/3 of what I'm going to be experiencing when Tom Hiddleston arrives, I'm going to need to make sure my Australian Medicare card really is valid in the UK.

"Aww... that's a cute photo. Wait... I was naked in that film??"

Well... it's finally happened. Tom Hiddleston has arrived. The guy on the left wth the clipboard is obviously immune to the wave of estrogen hanging above the crowd....

"Wait... they're NOT here for Luke Evans??" Bard from The Hobbit didn't really have the cultural impact Peter Jackson might have hoped.... whereas Loki is probably single-handedly keeping the fragile Marvel Cinematic Universe going, based on the biased opinions of the fans here in Leicester Square.

"You want ME to marry YOU? As in ALL OF YOU?" Such was my understanding of the basic subtext of what the girls in the pen were shouting.

This photo kind of needs an Asgardian flag in the background, I feel, but I don't know what that looks like.

Tom Hiddleston is standing right in front of me, but the surging crowd behind me has shifted me from row 3 to row 8 and I now have more paper in front of me that I do people. I guess this is an approximation of what the zombie apocalypse is going to be like.

"I think this is an approximation of what the zombie apocalypse is going to be like. Next time, I bring an axe". Or at least a hat with long horns.

So despite the crowding and the violence and the decay of the fabric of a moral civilisation, and me having to explain to a girl standing behind me that.. well... no, I wasn't really going to give up my spot for her merely on the basis that she claimed to (basically) deserve that spot more... it was some kind of Event. Something to tell the grandkids about (?), or failing that at least another entry into The 300+ links of The Archive Of Movie Premieres.

And I think I might take tomorrow off....

Until next time!

"There's more Tom Hiddleston journals? Where? TELL ME!!" Well, there was War Horse, The Deep Blue Sea....  then after that Thor, The Avengers, and Thor The Dark World.... and Only Lovers Left Alive, the 2014 Oliviers, the 2015 Baftas... the 2012 Empire Awards and Tuesday's BFI Luminous Gala
