19 Oct - 'The Last Witch Hunter' European Premiere

October 19th, 2015.

Just when I thought the conclusion of the London Film Festival yesterday would mean I'd get the chance to chill and relax after a near-fortnight of non-stop premieres... there's a premiere the day after the Closing Gala (yesterday's "Steve Jobs" with Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet).

Today's movie was a very different proposition however: smaller, brighter, more colourful and louder. And all of those in a good way!

Here's how it went down:

As the director himself would proudly point out, this is a fantasy movie that's not a sequel, prequel, midquel, reboot.. and not based on a TV show, novel, comic, or computer game. Or hasbro toy line of mascot usually found on the back of a cereal box.

Not so much 'don't try this at home' as 'rather difficult to try at home'

"Wassup, Homies?". Michael Caine may have been hanging around Vin Diesel a bit too long and started picking up one some of the lingo. (In the interview, he said he and Vin have been friends for over a decade, owing to Vin's Michael Caine impression coming to the attention of Sir Michael) (and that's a true story)

(said in Michael Caine's awesome accent) : "The spotlights bouncing off the red carpet are making my skin look ... the colour of a tangerine!"

Vin Diesel has arrived, to the screams of far too many Spanish ladies over the age of 40 in the crowd to really make sense, given this is London. In separate (and possibly not related news), and to the panicked Chagrin of his personal assistant and/or personal insurance company, Vin immediately grabbed That Guy's flaming sword and started waving it around.

"He's not my bodyguard. Don't need one. Actually, I'm HIS. Deal with it" Vin Diesel has come a long way from turning up to grace the Fast and Furious (4) premiere with barely 10minutes of his time back in 2009, to wearing moonboots and signing/high-fiving for all-comers at last year's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' premiere... to being a justifiable Dwayne-The-Rock Johnson-esque fan favourite and nice guy in every respect.

(Michael Caine in Michael Caine's Accent) : "We're currently forming the world's most unlikely gangsta rap duo" (Vin Diesel in Michael Caine's Accent) : "Yes, we surely are".

"I'm sorry I couldn't bring Steve Jablonsky over for you, dude!" - Director Breck Eisner attended this premiere, but sadly did not bring the composer of this movie's score (as well as the Transformers Films, The Island, and the underratted 'Battleship') to this film.

"Are you worried that the last movie with a title that began with 'The Last...' was M.Night.Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender', which was almost universally despised?"

While Breck Eisner answers questions about the movie's title, and Michael Caine continues to market his idea for a rap group and/or drivers role in a 'Fast' franchise, Vin Diesel starts signing autographs. I, meanwhile, am wondering where this movie's female lead, the lovely Rose Leslie, is.

I last (and first-) photographed Rose Leslie at the 'BFI Luminous' event two weeks ago, and was so stunned that when not wearing filthy greasy animal skins north of The Wall, she actually looks stunning.... that I still kind of think that.

Broad-shouldered security guards drift, and Vin Diesel is about to sign in our area, but Rose Leslie is being interviewed on the mini-stage and my variant on 'premiere photography triage' has its priorities correctly configured.

"Now you all promise use these autographs for good, and not evil, right?"

"I. AM. VIN!!!!!" Blur and focus be damned, I love this shot. The little GoPro did itself proud on this one.

"Minimum two more films in this franchise. I'm calling it". The challenge, as always, is finding a way to build a better and more memorable variant on the flaming broadsword in subsequent films....

I... appear to have made a connection. Not the kind I narrowly missed having with Kate Winslet yesterday, but another kind.

The director rushes to the stage to laud and applaud the film's visual effects supervisor Nicholas Brooks. (possibly for his skillz in visual effects and not, say, parallel parking...or making a mean bananabreadcakeslice.)

The photo is kind of weirdly exposed, but I love the contrast of overjoyed Vin, ambivalent lady to his right... and some kind of religious-style ecstasy on the face of the cameraman in the background.

And then... in an unannounced and rather awesomely random development : upcoming WonderWoman in DC Comics Gal Gadot showed up!! (she was in 3 of the Fast/Furious films - the fourth, fifth and sixth)... I've never photographed her before.

Needs one more 'w' to create a web address> Ohhhhh.... I see what you did there.

I feel like this Last Witch Hunter premiere has been usurped by the arrival of Gal Gadot. And I'm going to be honest... with Rose Leslie being out of sight, out of mind, and outlandishly unlikely to ask me out on a date... I'm cool with this development.

Worth it almost as much for Gal Gadot being stunningly beautiful as the glowering face of the security guy who presumably is upset because for duty's sake he's not allowed to turn around.

"Well.. if you're going to keep photographing me as long as I stand here... I might keep standing here" Also worth it for Glowering Security Dude becoming Outright Glum Security Dude.

DC's Wonder Woman is hugging Marvel comics' Groot. I'm trying to figure out whether I can think of anything more awesome than this, and I am failing.

So... that was rather great, as premieres go... especially in terms of exceeding my minimal expectations. The vibe was great, the stars were great, the unexpected extra guest was great.... and it's all rather great, really.

I think I might even have two evenings off before the next premiere. (Woohoo!) In the meantime, it's another entry for the 'Archive of Movie premieres'

Until next time!
