15 Oct - The (BFI LFF) Screening of 'Youth'

October 15, 2015.

Fundamentally, I believe that hard work should be rewarded, and that you should succeed or fail in an endeavour according to how much effort you put in. However... some days it all comes down to luck. And when that luck lands on your side....somehow, those victories feel even sweeter than they should.

To get an idea of how improbably lucky I was at this event would require you to know that I'm aware of premieres well in advance of them happening, have a spreadsheet on hand that tracks the days, and can (usually) plan my activities around them. But today I was always going to meet up with a friend, and the only event I knew of today was around 8pm.

Then the friend cancelled our catchup, and all of a sudden I had some time to kill... so I headed to Leicester Square at 5pm for a coffee and a relaxing wait til 8pm.

And here's what went down instead:

I've just arrived to find we're about 20mins from the start of a fully-specced premiere, perfectly formed... complete with paparazzi already in position! And in contravention of all logic, I've managed to get into a public pen IN THE FRONT ROW. Recall : I arrived 11hrs before the start of the 'Black Mass' premiere on Sunday and got wristband #55... and now I'm here 1/3 of an hour and I've got front row!

That movie poster is how I feel when I look in the mirror every morning.

In contravention (again) of all logic and how I could be front row arriving so late, there is a list of attendees and it is a GREAT list! Michael Caine? HARVEY KEITEL?? Rachel Weisz just two days after I photographed her at the premiere of 'The Lobster'??

Director Paolo Sorrentino won a Bafta in 2013 for best foreign film, but to me he looks remarkably like a distinguished non-manic Nicolas Cage might one day look if he stops making Ghostrider sequels and weird East European direct-to-DVD efforts.

Madalina Diana Ghenea has the kind of name that doesn't easily roll off the common tongues of ill-educated autograph dealers wanting to call out to people by their full names. It's part of her charm. (As is the contrast-autofocus-detect advantageousness of her dress)

"Didn't I sign autographs for most of you just two days ago??" Rachel Weisz is in this movie, as well as 'The Lobster' with Colin Farrell, which had its premiere just two days ago. (This, meanwhile is my 8th straight day of premieres... who wants MY autograph??)

"Sure I was in 'Looper', but that's a photo of Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt you're holding". Paul Dano was also in the rather fantastic Dennis Villeneuve (director of Sicario) movie 'Prisoners', and the somewhat overrated (I feel) 'Little Miss Sunshine'

"No I don't think I can convince Harvey Keitel to sign for you ... he's so cool he wouldn't even sign for ME on set!"

"Yeah, that's my album. But it's on physical media, and nobody buys DVDs anymore, dude". According to imdb, Singer Paloma faith plays the complex challenging character of 'herself' in this movie.

"If anyone wants me to punch you in the face so you'll have a real story to tell, just let me know" Harvey Keitel is pretty awesome, having played both The Wolf in Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction', and Mr White in Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs'... and that's not even counting his role as 'Sadusky' across not one but BOTH National Treasure films!

Harvey Keitel just punched me in the face merely by looking at me with vague disdain. Actually, my camera bore the brunt of the blow, and I feel awesome.

Is deciding whether to high-five you or murder you. I get the feeling that an arm-wrestle between Harvey Keitel and (say) Helen Mirren would probably destroy most of whatever continent it's on when it happens.

I'm not actually game to speculate what Harvey Keitel is thinking in any given moment.... (but I do like the black tie/ black shirt/ black jacket combo)

"Fine. I'll add my cool factor to yours. But I think mathematically it subtracts from mine and adds to yours". That's what happens every time me and my friends hang around Leicester Square's autograph dealers, too.

I'm going to be honest... I kind of like this photo. It's a photo that as little as 40mins earlier I had no idea it was possible I'd be taking. Edited to add : this is so the Edward/Bella/Jacob Twilight-rebooted cast listing we need to have.

So.. that was pretty great. There's something to be said for undeserved good fortune that the satisfaction of hard work for reasonable outcome just can't match. This is why I don't ask girls out on dates... it just wouldn't be satisfying to have hard work rewarded when a supermodel could just fall in your lap (so to speak).

I'll let you know how that theory works for me.

For now, I'll be satisfied with a new entry into 'The Archive of Movie Premieres', the eighth in as many days.

Until next time!

ps. Finally, if you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook at premieresdotco
