14 Oct - The (BFI LFF) 'Carol' Premiere

October 14th, 2015.

And so, for the SEVENTH day in a row (Trumbo, High-Rise, The Program, Black Mass, Brooklyn, The Lobster... and today Carol) I'm in Leicester Square, London, for BFI London Film Festival. The crowd for this one was medium sized, it only rained sometimes, and the female leads were both pretty glamorous. Here's how it went down:

"Tom, I think it's awesome that you're both proposing to me and filming the proposal, but I can't actually see your face". it's the Odeon Leicester Square for this premiere, and as long as nobody's offering physical favours for photos of the leads, I think this premiere should be slightly less quirky than yesterday's premiere for The Lobster.

What becomes of the red carpet scraps at London premieres? Weirdly... the same thing that happens to the rest of the carpet : it's never seen again. (And on that sombre note...  let's never mention it again)

Australia's own Cate Blanchett has won 2 Oscars (one for best supporting actress for 'The Aviator' and one for best actress for 'Blue Jasmine' whose premiere is here) and even the security dude holding the umbrella for her is intimidated by her presence. (I'm about 40m away and I am too)

She's probably kind of disappointed that Mad Max Fury Road didn't bring about a line of 'sandstorm chic' fashion.. but unwilling to abandon the idea fully. Even on a sporadically rainy October evening in London.

"I'd rather talk about the screenplay and the challenges I had in adapting it.... rather than my choice of grid pattern for the suit I'm wearing, if that' okay" - Phyllis Nagy adapted Patricia Highsmith's novel which turned into this movie.

"Jeff, you do realise that for the price of the rig and camera, you could have afforded the kind of camera so advanced it wouldn't need the rig??" "Yeah, but it would only look about 85% as cool as this"

"This isn't low-tech. In a couple of years James Cameron will be shooting Avatar sequels on camera phones". James Cameron will still be shooting Avatar sequels after Disney is finally forced to put some of its movies into the public domain and Sony finally stops rebooting Spider-man films.

"If I see one more bit of Star Wars Lego before the movie comes out I swear I'll....." - director Todd Haynes approaches his interview.

"You directed Cate Blanchett playing one of several variants of Bob Dylan in 'I'm Not There'... but what was the point of that film, exactly?" That movie's justification for existing seemed to summarise to 'it exists because we're making it, obviously'.

Cate Blanchett and I have made a connection, possibly because we're both Australian. (Although the Republic of Austria and/or the Australian department of immigration might raise eyebrows about that in as little as a month from now)

"My eyes are DOWN HERE, please". I was all set to say ' (insert name) is a producer of this film', hoping that by process of elimination I could use imdb to identify her. Turns out this movie has ELEVEN PRODUCERS. And even if you remove Cate Blanchett and the four producers who are guys... that still leaves me with only a 1 in 6 chance of guessing correctly.

"But nobody TOLD me that ties were no longer mandatory on red carpets, Janine..." Even the director knew. John Magaro is in this film, and was also in (but not at the premiere of) Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken' )

Rooney Mara arrived at this premiere some time ago, but she's too short to photograph above the crowd. Cate Blanchett, meanwhile, is both taller and seemingly carries one of the rings of power from Lord of the Rings that make people instinctively give her space.

Costume designer Sandy Powell has won 3 oscars for Costume Design (Shakespeare in Love, The Young Victoria and The Aviator), so I feel somewhat ill-qualified to pronounce what she's wearing as 'DC Comics' Joker-esque at this premiere.

Long-range cropped shot of Rooney Mara, who was excellent in both her small role in The Social Network, and her larger starring role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo where I previously photographed her.

I'm briefly distracted by something shiny(ish) in the form of a calculator digital wristwatch. I used to have one back in the 1990s... and all of a sudden I kind of wish I still did.

Rooney Mara has made it to our part of the crowd, which has suddenly swelled with those lovable celebrity-parasites known as Autograph Dealers. Sadly Rooney Mara elected not swear at them a la Saoirse Ronan at the premiere of 'Brooklyn' a few days earlier... she merely elected not to linger.

"A Galadriel spin-off movie? I'd be up for it, but I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson only does sagas nowadays.... and I think I'd need to commit to at least eight or nine movies... just for the prequels"

"Fine. This is my good side". Rooney Mara has one of the nicest profiles I've photographed (and I don't say that about many women)

I get the feeling that if the lace on Rooney Mara's dress was fully unfurled, it would have the surface area of a tennis court. As for the thing that's holding her hair in place? I decline to speculate.

I'm not entirely convinced about the vaguely Mrs Claus / Dominatrix / Halloween dress Cate Blanchett is wearing at this premiere, but I'll admit I've been wearing the same Lonsdale hoodie to almost every BFI LFF premiere this year ...

Not sure what to make of this shot... but it's kind of different.

So... that's another one done. BFI London Film Festival still has four days to run, but I'm unlikely to make it to all four of those days. At the moment I'm definitely doing one, hopefully doing two, and the other two days it depends on just how sleep-deprived I'm willing to be.

We'll see. However, it's another one for The Archive of Movie Premieres at the very least.

Until next time!
