9 May - The 'Dark Shadows' Premiere

May 9th, 2012.

So it's another Tim Burton / Johnny Depp premiere. I've had limited luck photographing them separately OR together at the same event prior to this. And of course they're not exactly unpopular. *And* it's at Leicester Square, which means it's big. *And* then it started raining.

"What if my skin isn't pale enough and Johnny Depp says something about it? I'll DIE!" This is the kind of hypothetical game you can play to while away the hours waiting for a premiere to start. I think this was at about 4 hours to go...

... and then it rained for about an hour and a half! (I had an umbrella. It was better than this)

So... this was the QUIET, uncarpeted part of the premiere that only Tim Burton signed in. The majority of the crowd, the press, the photographers and interviewers were BEHIND me.

I'm about two Depp / Burton premieres away from adopting this as my primary shooting Strategy. (Fine... it's *one* away)

Tim Burton!! He directed Batman (1989) Batman Returns (199...1?) (and he might even sign your kid if you're really lucky). I previously got him looking weird and unfocussed at "Alice In Wonderland" and fans of his finger being the only thing not blurry about him will love my efforts at the BAFTAs earlier this year.

Jackie Earle Haley (who was excellent as Rorschach in "Watchmen" is no plausible relation to Haley Joel Osment (who saw Dead People in the Sixth Sense). Triple barrel names confuse me though...

I don't know who this is but it could be Bella Heathcote, and if so she's in the film (and was also in the movie 'In Time') - which is a rare double of "I saw pretty lady and didn't randomly shoot a civilian for once"

I've probably gone from "who is this" to "it's vitally important to learn as much as I can about Bella Heathcote in a non-stalkerish way" in about two minutes.

Johnny Lee Miller, IMDB has just informed me, was in the movie 'Aeon Flux' with Charlize Theron. Argh. The thing about that movie is that I only have the room in my heart to forgive _at most_ Charlize Theron and Pete Postlethwaite for being in that horrid, horrid film.

Helena Bonham Carter, though, I can forgive any number of bad movies she's been in, and the good news is I don't have to - she rocks them all. I last photographed her arriving late at the BAFTAs earlier this year.

"And when you're done could you email those shots to my optometrist? He can use them to check if I've got cataracts"

"Dude, nobody shoots Olympus anymore" Eva Green was excellent in the excellent Casino Royale, Very Good in the pretty bad The Golden Compass, and very friendly and stunning at the premiere of "Perfect Sense". And for some horrible reason, my camera has moved to +0.3 expose correction, something I won't realise for another 200 or so shots...)

Yeah, I'm waiving the five dollars she owes me. If ever any money was owed by either of us to the other.

I have no idea who this kid is. But he signed autographs. Those people may also not have known who this kid is. If, however, he's Gulliver McGrath then he IS in this film, he was also in Martin Scorcese's "Hugo"

Johnny Depp is a great actor, he could arrive dressed as almost anyone... (he could even be the guy standing next to me pretending to be a photographer here to photograph Johnny Depp). (But he's not. That's Francis. They guy next to me. I still have no idea who the old guy is).

Tim Burton didn't sign in our area (actually only Chloe Moretz and Michelle Pfeiffer did). But what we want to know is : Does he like what Christopher Nolan has done with Batman? (Don't we all)

Chloe Moretz was awesome as Hit-Girl in the film Kick-Ass (2010) and was in Hugo (2011), but she seems to have aged about a decade since "that premiere" .

Michelle Pfeiffer was Catwoman in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, which I'm horrified to learn was over 20 years ago.

Chloe Moretz may have grown up further since I last photographed her a few minutes ago.

The final arrival is Johnny Depp, whom *many people* at this premiere had heard of. Me? I'm familiar with some of his work, too.

"Yes, you with the thing. You're awesome. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise". Umm... thanks?

"What's the best thing about being Johnny Depp? Well, for one thing I can stand however I want when being interviewed and nobody will draw attention to it..."

So.... was that good? I'm not sure. I actually left in disgust, realising that it would have taken luck more than skill for these photos to have turned out okay. I felt unlucky at the time... seems I did okay. At least I finally have semi-decent shots of Depp and Burton and Bella Heathcote to add to my collection...

And it's another premiere "for the archive of movie premieres" the last few entries of which were:

Safe - Jason! Statham!
African Cats - The Directors! Will & Kate!
Outside Bet - Maza! Atack!
The AVENGERS - Downey Jnr! Johansson! Hiddleston! Hemsworth!
American Pie 4 aka American Reunion - Biggs! Levi! Suvari!

Until next time!
