28 Nov - The 'Hugo in 3D' Royal Premiere

November 28th, 2011.

So after the disappointment and childish petulance of last week's "Puss In Boots Premiere"
it was time to head out again, this time for a Royal Screening Premiere. Historically, these have been quite interesting. I didn't do one last year, but the year before it was The Lovely Bones - attended by Charles and Camilla and the year before that it was A Bunch of Amateurs and Queen Elizabeth II herself attended

So.... who would it be this year? Keep your expectations in check and let's see how it all went down:

The red carpet is laid, the position is good, and as far as we know there should be some people coming. Premieres have their own particular kind of fog of war that people walking past leading ordinary lives don't care about. Like, at all.

Sniffer dogs are unusual premieres, however this is a Royal Screening coupled with a Premiere, so precautions have to be taken. Oddly these precautions do not involve turfing out irritating and rowdy autograph dealers and people who haven't showered in the past 96 hours.

Good news - it seems that a royal screening is enough to bring out A-list directors! (Why didn't they do THAT for Tintin. I bet Prince Harry would have LOVED that film...)

I don't know who this is. It's not Martin Scorcese, but apparently he's a producer. The movie, to be fair has ten of them, and even Johnny Depp is one (he didn't attend the premiere). I might have to check... maybe I was one? I mean... I DID attend the premiere.

It's Mr and Mrs Sir Ben Kingsley, who between them have a knighthood, an Oscar, a credited role in the movie 'Species' and a fetching beard/moustache.

And here we have Asa Butterfield (yes, I spelled that correctly) plays the role of 'Hugo Cabret' - after whom the title of the film is named. He has a few acting roles to his credit, as well as a pair of glasses.

Richard Griffiths played the vile Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter saga. He might owe me five dollars, but given he kept his adopted ward under a set of stairs for much of his formative years, I might let it go.

Wow. I have a pair of trousers with that exact pattern.

With apologies for the intrusiveness of an extreme closeup, this is an extreme closeup of the guy who wrote Star Trek Nemesis (aka - the one that basically destroyed the franchise), but also wrote Gladiator and has two Oscar Nominations to his name (Stuart Baird). No reason to take off the long zoom,  really.

No idea. But I hope it's Dr/Vice-President Gaius Baltar from Battlestar Galactica.

I also don't know who this is, but if it's actress Miranda Otto, I'll be saddened a bit as it will mean she's aged somewhat since Lord of the Ring. (Alternatively, she might be in her mid-80s in which case she looks spectacular) (As you may imagine, my smooth pickup lines make me quite the hit with The Ladiez...)

And completing the trilogy of "people I photographed without having a clue who they are", there is this lady. Alternatively, I just photographed her as a pretext to snap the wonderful shawl her husband (?) companion (?) accountant (?) is holding... possibly for her. Or himself. It's a great shawl.

Queen guitarist / writer Brian May walked past before I had a chance to switch lenses. To be fair, even a wide-angle lens might have had trouble fitting in all the hair. He didn't stop to sign or pose, so apologies for not being able to get a better shot.

Chloe Moretz was brilliant as Hit Girl in 2010's Kick-Ass, a movie that deserved to a hell of a lot better at the box office than it did. Also : Must watch 'Let Me In' a remake of a Swedish Horror film that's meant to be almost as good as the original. She's an absolute lock-in for photo for the day, unless I can get a photo of Martin Scorcese in focus, obviously.

"So... what would you do if you were Steven Spielberg for a day? Sorry... we usually don't ask people of your calibre that. Still...?" Not quite in focus... damnit.

Meanwhile, director Martin Scorcese has decided to sign for a bit! It seems a bit unfair that they put him next to the tallest minder and bodyguard for this premiere, though.

"A zit? here? how big???" Actress Chloe Moretz is, in theory, far too cool to be worried about looking uncool at a premiere. (Just watch Kick-Ass already. Sure, it's violent and not that funny... but it's COOL! And I'm way desensitised against blood thanks to Hollywood!)

This is the look of a man who has been handed a spec script for a prequel trilogy to the movie Taxi Driver. Like...Again.

Man at back : "Mister Scorcese will pretend to be interested in a maximum of one each of your stupid script ideas, okay?" Mr Scorcese : "Oooh! Look : Raging Bull II meets Rocky VII in 3D! I love it!"

Helen McCrory played Malfoy's mum Narcissa in the Harry Potter series. It's becoming fairly clear that in any gathering of 3 or 4 medium-to-high calibre English actors at a premiere, at least two will have a connection to the Harry Potter series, or be John Hurt. (Who was also in Harry Potter.)

Another quick go-through from a sniffer dog, the police presence increases steadily for fifteen minutes, and the red carpet is cleared. It's all going on.

An Audi Vehicle dispenses two elderly people and an entourage of quirky-looking people : it's the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. (I had to look up their titles on wikipedia....)

Sure, the people at the back are famous and/or obscured by any number of burly and/or numerous security detail protecting them from the dangers of democracy, etc. But check out the dude in the foreground! Great Moustache.

So... that was a pretty good one. And naturally it joins "The Archive of Movie Premieres"

The last several of which were:
Puss In Boots - Banderas! Hayek!
My Week With Marilyn - Hermione! Dobby! Lily Potter! Gilderoy Lockhart! Madam Hooch!
Happy Feet 2 - Robin Wiliams! Elijah Wood! The Penguin?
Twilight : Breaking Dawn pt1 - RPatz! TLautz! KStewz!

Until next time!
