20 Nov - The 'My Week With Marilyn' Premiere

November 20th, 2011.

If it feels like mere hours since I last posted one of these, that's because it was mere hours since I'd been . That was for the premiere of "Happy Feet 2", with Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and director George Miller . It was just a short walk (meaning : RUN) from Leicester Square to Haymarket for this premiere, and since I was lucky enough to get a spot at that much smaller premiere, I was all set for yet more battery-draining, memory-card filling mayhem.

Here's how it went down:

Michelle Williams, who plays Marilyn Monroe in the film, didn't attend the premiere. But, of all things, fans of the Harry Potter films were in for a treat. Read on...

One of the most narrow red carpets I've ever seen : both the carpet AND the fans' pen were on the FOOTPATH, which backed onto a four lane road (!), of which one lane of traffic had been closed while the other three remained open.

My position in the public pen might be described as rather enviable, as shown here. Well.... when I say 'enviable' it only counts if you're willing to have several dozen paparazzi blasting flashes directly into your own camera! (which, in this instance, I was)

Arrival number one was Eddie Redmayne, who plays a character called 'Colin Clark' in the film. That's not particularly helpful, I know. But it's third on the credits of the movie, which is something more than even Emma Watson can manage.

"You're from the future and you've posted a second photo of me because you know I'm a bigger deal where you're from than when you first photographed me,huh?" that conversation didn't go...

Harry Potter connection #1 at this premiere - Kenneth Brannagh played Gilderoy Lockhart in the Second Harry Potter movie. He also Directed the movie Thor and has FOUR Oscar Nominations to his name.

Kenneth Branagh was also my guineapig for 'how to shoot into a flash barrage' photography. (I'm sure he's honoured!)

Director Simon Curtis and his wife Elizabeth McGovern show up (?She was in Kick-Ass? and ?Clash of the Titans?) (I'm confused - I've never heard of him, and I don't recognise her from either of the two memorable movies she's been in). (Damn 'Clash of the Titans' sucked...)

Actress Laura Carmichael is also in Downton Abbey (which I still haven't watched), as well as "Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy" (at which premiere I didn't see her). _Could we have another random Harry Potter connection please?_

Toby Jones is Harry Potter Connection #2, and he provided the voice of the much-hated Dobby The House Elf in the movies (though your view as to his hatefulness may vary, even the main character told him never to attempt to save his life again in the second film)

... and Damnit, Dobby couldn't even follow that simple request in the secondlast film!

Awesomely, Harry Potter Connection #3 at this premiere comes in the form of actress Geraldine Somerville, who plays Lily Potter - Harry's Mother - in flashbacks, pensieves and 'mirrors of eriseds' across the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7(A)th and 7(B)th movies in the series. Watch 'em if you don't believe me. (or, you know... go onto imdb)

That makes it Dobby the Freaking House Elf, Gilderoy Lockhart and Lily Potter all at the one premiere. But what are the odds of a FOURH Harry Potter alumni showing up?

Oh. That's right. Refer movie poster. Emma Watson makes it Harry Potter Connection #4. And in the absence of Michelle Williams, Dominic Cooper, Julio Ormond and the enigmatically named 'Pip Torrens' and 'Michael Kitchen' I suspect I'm going to be featuring a lot of photos of her. As for the Paparazzi, they're all preparing by starting to shout en masse, which is a sound remarkably primal and not (say) operatic in any way.

In order to save time, it appears Emma Watson has an animatronic waxwork statue mounted on a skateboard to halve her autograph signing duties. Smart!

The paparazzi have their way and get Miss Watson's attention prior to her reaching the semi-circle of flash-related doom she's about to walk into.

As close to a 'grunge' look as I can put on a young actress / burberry model. Don't worry: if she has any Oscar aspirations she'll have to do a Charlize Theron and 'Monster' up soon enough.

Noted Thespian Sir Derek Jacobi shows up. (I always make sure to call him a 'thespian' rather than an actor, for some reason) - he was Councillor Gracchus in 'Gladiator(2001)' and more recently an Archbishop in 'The King's Speech'.

Unbelievably, a Harry Potter Connection #5 shows up in the form of the improbably-named and American-accented Zoe Wannamaker, who plays the even more awesomely-named "Madam Hooch" in the first Harry Potter film (she's the one that teaches the students how to ride brooms).

I never did fully get eye-contact. But I'm calling it 'close'

So... that was that. Two premieres in one afternoon/evening, some 2000 photos (?) taken and a harddrive filled to bursting! Still, that makes it TWO IN A DAY for "The Archive of Movie Premieres"

Until next time!
