27 Oct - 'The Deep Blue Sea' premiere (Hiddleston = Yes, Super-intelligent Sharks = No)

October 25th, 2011.

And so, it's time for the final premiere of the 2011 London Film Festival. It's either the much-awaited RE-release of a genetically engineered shark movie starring Samuel L Jackson, LL Cool J and Saffron Burrows...

.....or some kind of Drama-Romance starring Tom Hiddleston and Rachel Weisz. I won't speak for everyone, but I know which one I'm hoping for.

(Woo! Sharks!!!)

Oh dear. I don't think Tom Hiddleston is going to sign the giant inflatable Great White I brought with me...

The red carpet hasn't been laid and the sky is ominously overcast. On the plus side, this winter season's fetching high-viz jackets are making their debut...

"I know he's a charismatic actor, but that Tom Hiddleston also plays Loki the God of Mischief... and I don't want any 5hit to go down here tonight."

Actor Jim Broadbent arrives. He was excellent as Harold Ziedler in Moulin Rouge (how is that movie ten years plus old??) and suitably ditzy as Horace Slughorn in the last couple of Harry Potters.

<hastily> "No, I don't know anything about horcruxes. I'm going to turn back into a sofa now. Bye-bye"

I always feel both silly and faintly proud when I take a photo of somebody looking all powerful and imposing at a premiere who wireimages and getty don't identify (or I'm tired and I only check one of the two sites), suggesting they're not actually famous even by the loose standards of the paparazzi. Therefore, well played, sir.

It's Tom Hiddleston!! If you're screaming loudly, it might be because you're standing next to me, crushing my fragile ear canal.

Tom Hiddleston is awesome, I have been told... and repeatedly reminded. (... is hopefully not what's occupying his nervous thoughts right now...)

Security Guy : "Psssst. Apparently Rachel Weisz isn't coming tonight, but I reckon if you sashay down the red carpet convincingly enough, you might make it work!" Woman: "Young man, are you flirting with me? Because it's working!"

Director (albeit not of this film) Terry Gilliam shows up wearing what can only be described as a yellow-and-grey dishtowel as a cape. It's only to spare your retinas that I've converted the shot to black'n'white for you.

The Director of "Deep Blue Sea" was Renny Harlin, who also directed Die Hard 2. However, as stated, this movie is called "The Deep Blue Sea" and it is not about sharks... unless they're not highlighting that in the trailer yet.

The director of this film is Terence Davies, whom IMDB says once used to be an accountant, but of whom Empire Magazine says "He has the eye of MALICK, the ear of SCORCESE and the precision of KUBRICK.. so why is TERENCE DAVIES still the greatest director you've never heard of?" High praise, for a man who looks like he's recently become obsessed with Pac-man!

"Thanks for coming. If we could ask you one more thing, though, unrelated to the film : how SOFT is this boom mike? Have you felt it? It's spectacular, am I right?"

This is actor James Purefoy, who was in Resident Evil in 2002 and is not in this film. I didn't recognise him although I quite liked that movie. Another great jacket, too. (I'm sorry : once it became increasingly apparent that actress Rachel Weisz would not be attending, my mood and motivation dropped a little...)

To quote wireimage directly: "Henry Haddon-Paton attends the premiere of 'The Deep Blue Sea' at the closing night of The..". Sure, yes, it's a bit of an abrupt ending to the quote, but I like it somehow.

Meanwhile, back with the fans, Tom Hiddleston gets to do what Loki of Asgard never did : lift Thor's Hammer. Which is apparently made of styrofoam.

"Could you write "if found, please return to 'Ko-Li of Ard-Asg?' and then sign it?"

"Sure I'll sign this Hammer.... I'll sign your ratchets, screwdrivers and allen keys too". Tom Hiddleston is a true gentleman.

Good news for fans of Tom Hiddleston and the possibility of him attending future premieres : he's in (1) Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" and (2) will play in the upcoming Happy Meal, Comic tie-in. Action Figure Range, Colouring-In Book and possibly a movie called "Avengers" next year!

"Dave, Dave, DAVE!! SIGN FOR US" ... those were the cries of the fans near me. Now, they were actually calling out to David Walliams who had already walked past without me noticing. So.... this is probably not anyone famous whose name coincidentally is Dave. However, sir, you are truly worth photographing. Not everyone can wear mustard as well as you are right now.

"THERE ARE *FOUR* LIGHTS!!!" (you either get that quote regardless of the context ...or you don't). (if you don't.. then how close is that assistant standing to Tom Hiddleston??)

Here's a big hint for anyone standing next to me at a premiere : wear a wide red sombrero-style knitted red beanie. There's almost no way that'll get in the way in dozens and dozens of photos. (I'm going to wear a freaking SAURON helmet from Lord of the Rings to the next premiere....)

So.. that's it for London Film Festival for another year. No more premiere-a-day photography, and instead having to live from premiere to premiere. Apparently the next one isn't until... three days from now. Cool!

Until next time!

Oh, and because I've since become even more aware of the importance of Tom Hiddleston (and have already added a couple more shots to the journal above) - here's a couple more that weren't originally in but now.... are at least appended...

"He's right beside me, isn't he?"

"He's right beside me, isn't he?"

"I've felt softer..."

"I've felt softer..."

"Hey, you're right! I AM on that poster!"

"Hey, you're right! I AM on that poster!"

Until next time!

And here, by the way, is the link to The archive of Movie Premieres- it's basically at ONE HUNDRED. (Am I obsessed? I say ....no.. why?)

By the way, if you ever want to know when I post one of these journals feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook at premieresdotco.
