21 Sep - 'The Debt' premiere

September 21st, 2011.

Something wasn't right with this premiere, and it wasn't the location or the stars or the fact that I'd made the rookie error of not recharging my only set of batteries after the Real Steel Premiere last week. The problem was that it was a mild 17-18 degrees celsius in London town (ie. nothing to complain about) but despite three layers of clothing, I was shivering. That's not a good sign - not for photography, but for my low pain threshold!

But.... enough of potential excuses, here's how a premiere for a film I'd never heard of starring people I *HAD* heard of went down:

It's not a Leicester Square premiere this time - the Curzon Mayfair is closer to the classy wealth of Mayfair. (Who or what do I need to rob or mug to afford one of those Bugatti Veyrons in the display window of one of the nearby dealerships?)

Kind of weirdly, this premiere also came with its own adjoining protesters shouting and chanting at the embassy across the road (I think it was the Saudi Arabian embassy, and the flag they're waving is either Bahrain or Qatar (I think?))

The List makes a showing, but from this distance I couldn't make out any of the names. Ridiculously, I only brought a 31mm and a 10-20mm lens to this premiere (instead of also bringing a more durable medium range lens) as well as the aforementioned 'failure to recharge batteries' issue.Rookie errors, all.

But enough of the pre-emptive excuses. I had a camera, I had a spot in a public pen, and there was a premiere with a carpet. Bring it.

Eventually I figured out that he was the male lead in the utterly abysmal movie "Aeon Flux" (starring the only thing good about that movie : Charlize Theron in some improbably awesome sci-fi costumes). Further checks on imdb reveal he was also the voice of "Poggle the Lesser" in Star Wars ep II (??) and Celeborn in Lord of the Rings (really??) . His name is Marton Csokas.

People started calling out "Jasper! Jasper!" for this guy. I'd actually never heard of the name outside works of literature, but apparently that's his name. (He was in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, if he looks familiar but you can't place him) - Jesper Cristensen

Candid photography does throw up these images from time to time. It was nothing personal, I didn't even mention the five dollars I claim she still owes me.

imdb informs me that Tom Wilkinson was also in 'Shakespeare in Love' which I liked, and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' which was outstanding. The director of 'Shakespeare in Love' also directed this film. Coincidence? I say "no. why?"

"Judi Dench was in Shakespeare in Love AND she won an Oscar for it. That shoulda been me. You could've stood up for ME, Tom!". (Helen Mirren has won an Oscar... but I guess once you've won one, you might as well get a second for a matching set of bookends)

Girl on left: "And that's me and my boyfriend on the beach in Spain" Helen Mirren: "That's lovely, dear. May I go now?"

Every now and then everyone else in the photo is doing something more interesting than the main subjects. In this photo, nobody is. I'm also told that Tom Wilkinson occasionally smiles (It's true! I've seen it! He's a nice guy!)

Meanwhile, Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson is.... very tall.

Actress Jessica Chastain is just breaking into acting (?!) - her recent credits are the US film 'The Help', the highly regarded 'Tree of Life' and the 2008 movie 'Jolene' where she plays the role of Jolene. That's all I've got. Except, you know... Interesting dress

Okay, VERY interesting dress. (In my defence, I'm developing a cold and am wearing a black hoodie with the hoodie turned up, which on a night like this is not putting out any good vibes for the ladiez. Sigh....)

For no readily apparent reason, Colin Firth shows up. That means the actors who won Academy Awards for portraying Queen Elizabeth II and King George VI are BOTH at this premiere. Cool.

"Ewoks don't blink! Darth Vader never goes "NNOOOOOOoooOOoo"! Greedo NEVER EVER shot first! Boba Fett shouldn't have a New Zealand accent! What the hell, George!? *What the HELL?*" You tell 'em, Colin. I'm not buying the newly-released Star Wars on Blu-Ray either.

John Madden (far left) is the director of 'The Debt'. He also directed 'Shakespeare in Love', which won the Best Picture Oscar in.... '98, I think? Oscars all round in this film, really.... (I once won a certificate for punctuality in high school..)

Wait. Helen Mirren has a tattoo below her thumb and is off doing gang signs to fans? That's kind of.... awesome, actually.

"The tattoo makes me cool? What about the Beretta in my handbag... does THAT make me cool, too?" For legal reasons I'd like to clarify that I have no idea what Helen Mirren has in her handbag.

To summarise : Helen Mirren? Is cooler than you. (And, needless to say, me)

That is all. I'm going home, collapsing into bed, and posting this two days later. (You're welcome!). It also totally joins The Archive Of Movie Premieres which I think must almost (?) be at 100 movies by now? Wow.

Until (shiver) next time!
