23 Nov - Madagascar 2 premiere

November 23rd, 2008.

Less than a week after snapping HRH Queen Elizabeth II herself in Leicester Square, the fans were out again for the Premiere of the Dreamworks animated film "Madagascar : Back2Africa". The forecast for Sunday over the past five days had alternated between possible snow (!!), sleet (!), heavy rain and light rain, and as it turned out the weather limited itself to the latter two. However, rain and premieres are uneasy bedfellows at best.

With that in mind, here's how it went:

Madagascar 2. The stars were all there, except David Schwimmer. Which is odd, because seriously, what's he done since the previous Madagascar?? (This meanwhile is Ben Stiller... he's been in Tropic Thunder recently. I know that because I photographed him at the premiere for that film)

"Sorry, kids. Notice the lack of opposable thumbs? We ain't signing nothing!"

Meanwhile, this lady seemed to think that Ben Stiller had the power to bless babies. She must have stood there for a minute - he's not the Pope, lady! (Edited to add : how sweet... this photo dates back to a time before I knew about shadow correction in photoshop...)

Ben Stiller, hopefully signing a cheque made out to the Derek Zoolander Centre For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Want To Learn How To Do Other Things Good Too. (In other news : My K10D is weatherproof, repeat, weatherproof)

Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will Smith is her husband, she was in the second and third Matrix films, and provides the voice of a hippo in this movie. (My 50mm lens does get a bit close to celebrities at times...)

I always feel like I'm being rude wishing fervently for celebs to retreat to a better minimum shooting distance. I mean.. how do you tell the likes of Al Pacino to 'please back off so I can take a better photo'?). Fortunately, it is the nature of stars to want to get away from people, eventually.

Wow. A few centimetres closer and I would have been looking for a new camera...

Jeffrey Katzenberg, He's one of the founders of the studio that made the film (He's the "K" in the studio called "Dreamworks SKG"), making him a BIG celebrity turn-up. Funnily, I don't think the Paparazzi knew who he was!

All the fun of a rainy evening premiere (check out the murderous albeit blurry face of the security guard at the bottom in the foreground!)

"Is he listening? I'm not all that much of a fan of Zoolander, actually. A Night at the Roxbury, though, pretty awesome" Yeah, except Ben Stiller wasn't IN A Night at the Roxbury. Jada Pinkett-Smith, meanwhile, is arguably best known for playing the character Niobe in the second and third movies of the Matrix trilogy.

Meanwhile, other celebrities included Top Gear host Richard Hammond.

Some Guy. I think he's tagged on wireimage.com but his name escapes me. I'd like to think he was the dude who played MacGuyver, but I doubt it.

Some guy. There was a lot of screaming and the name sounds slightly vaguely familiar. Soccer player? Darts player? Olympic steeplechaser? Who knows. (Edited to add : Gary Linnecker, England soccer captain). However in more immediately relevant matters...

Finally, a Yellow Cap Guy update : he was in attendance. (You're welcome!)

And then, somewhat sodden and soaked, I went home for dinner. Not a bad night, all things considered.

The next scheduled London premiere is for Baz Luhrman's 'Australia', however right now it looks like I'll miss it because our departmental Christmas party will be on the same night. Aargh!! Free food or free celebrities... where do my priorities lie??

PS. If you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here
