23 Nov - Madagascar 2 premiere

November 23rd, 2008.

Less than a week after snapping HRH Queen Elizabeth II herself in Leicester Square, the fans were out again for the Premiere of the Dreamworks animated film "Madagascar : Back2Africa". The forecast for Sunday over the past five days had alternated between possible snow (!!), sleet (!), heavy rain and light rain, and as it turned out the weather limited itself to the latter two. However, rain and premieres are uneasy bedfellows at best.

(note : in 2018 for the 10th Anniversary I was bored and decided to see if it would be possible/worth it to re-edit the photos, taken ten years earlier on a Pentax K10D with a kit lens and cheap prime lens… mixed results…)

With that in mind, here's how it went:

Madagascar 2. The stars were all there, except David Schwimmer. Which is odd, because seriously, what's he done since the previous Madagascar?? (This meanwhile is Ben Stiller... he's been in Tropic Thunder recently. I know that because I photographed him at the premiere for that film)

"Sorry, kids. Notice the lack of opposible thumbs? We ain't signing nothing!"

Ben Stiller, hopefully signing a cheque made out to the Derek Zoolander Centre For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Want To Learn How To Do Other Things Good Too. (In other news : My K10D is weatherproof, repeat, weatherproof)

Meanwhile, this lady seemed to think that Ben Stiller had the power to bless babies. She must have stood there for a minute - he's not the Pope, lady! (Edited to add : how sweet... this photo dates back to a time before I knew about shadow correction in photoshop...) (remains as before)

Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will Smith is her husband, she was in the second and third Matrix films, and provides the voice of a hippo in this movie. (My 50mm lens does get a bit close to celebrities at times...) (remains as before)

I always feel like I'm being rude wishing fervently for celebs to retreat to a better minimum shooting distance. I mean.. how do you tell the likes of Al Pacino to 'please back off so I can take a better photo'?). Fortunately, it is the nature of stars to want to get away from people, eventually.

Wow. A few centimetres closer and I would have been looking for a new camera... (remains unedited)

It’s raining heavily and I don’t like it… but check out the murderous glare of Security Dude (blurry, in the foreground)

Don’t know who this is/ still don’t know who this is, but I like the spectral halo and it pleases me to think he might be the guy who used to play MacGyver, though I suspect he’s not.

Don’t know who this is but the fans were shouting out excitedly. Politician? Talk Show host? Talented lepidopterist? (no….edited to add : England soccer captain Gary Linnecker)

For what it’s worth, here’s a comparison of old vs new edits. Firstly, I edited the EDITED files (I would have made bigger changes had I started with the originals). Secondly, the changes are MUCH more visible when viewed large - looking at them online, it just looks like I’ve desaturated, darkened and reduced over-contrasted. In fact, they’ve been improved, sharpened, had grain removed and had overly garish colours corrected. Still….

And then, somewhat sodden and soaked, I went home for dinner. Not a bad night, all things considered.

The next scheduled London premiere is for Baz Luhrman's 'Australia', however right now it looks like I'll miss it because our departmental Christmas party will be on the same night. Aargh!! Free food or free celebrities... where do my priorities lie??

PS. If you want to know whenever I post a new premiere journal, feel free to follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here

Finally, a few extra shots I would have put into this journal:
