The 2016 BAFTAs, Royal Opera House London

February 14th, 2016.

Yes, it's Valentines Day, and unlike all y'all who are out there paying a premium for restaurant bookings and plants and chocolates because Marketing demands it, I get to celebrate my ongoing single-hood by having my Valentines Day spent outside, in the cold, in the company of some of the most talented performers and film-makers in the world. Sadly, Charlize Theron didn't attend, otherwise "I spent Valentines Day With Charlize Theron" would have been the title of this journal. Still... I spent it with Kate Winslet and Alicia Vikander, so I'm not complaining.

It's going to be a long evening / morning of editing, so might as well get started. Here's how it went down:

It's the BAFTAs - the culmination of the past year of cinema excellence, the capstone to a year of premieres I've been to, and the one day per year where no number of layers of clothing is too many.

This year's Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema is being given to a costume design house. I wore a sleek black subtly branded blad beanie. This man did not. Still, well done to Angels Costumes.

GoPro affixed to a barrier! Now why didn't I think of that? (Actually I did... but turns out Bafta takes a dim view of putting things on their posterboards - this one and another mounted next to it were quickly removed)

So with hours of waiting and nervous jockeying for position, and hoping that the rather tall and bulky people wouldn't see me as an easy enough barrier between them and (say) Alicia Vikander..... it started to begin

My spot looked like this about two hours before the event started. Once it began in earnest, the crowds were about four-deep and considerably less civilised.

"Thirteenth time's the charm for this year's Oscars, right?" My first 'catch of the day' is a very big catch indeed : composer Thomas Newman. Despite a criminally unfair zero (0) Oscars count after 12+1 nominations, he has 2 Baftas to his name, and the scores for the last two James Bond movies - Skyfall and Spectre

Actress Olga Kurylenko's dress is like a combination lace doily and one of those magic eye patterns that has a hidden image in it. She's best known for being the female lead in 'Quantum of Solace' (a terrible premiere but both she and I attended), and she was also in 'Oblivion' .

"It's not about seafood, babe..." The Lobster was one of my favourite movies of last year - and certainly the most stunningly surprising and original. Yorgos Lanthimos both wrote and directed it. I recommend watching it with a loved one - if your relationship can survive it, it's Meant To Be. If not... good luck.

John Boyega (right) was nominated (and won) the Bafta Rising Star Award on the night, an award sponsored by my own mobile telecommunications provider. And if I may use this journal for a personal shout-out : I'd like to say how frikkin unreliable and awful they are.

Bel Powley was another nominee for the (insert name of company that only provides arbitrary network coverage for texts in central London when it feels like it) Rising Star Award. Her dress is also kind of great - I'm not sure if it's nominated for anything, but it should be.

I don't know who this is, and I do believe that the Surgeon General recommends *FOOD* is an essential part of your daily diet... but the Russian Orthodox drapes she's wearing are stunning.

Alicia Vikander was nominated for both Best Actress AND Best Supporting Actress awards on the night - I thought she was brilliant in 'Ex Machina' and her other nomination was for 'The Danish Girl'. Weirdly, nobody's mentioning 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E'...

Alicia Vikander's dress is also worthy of one... maybe two nominations. After truly remarkable chorus of chanting for her, she felt she had no option but to come over and sign autographs.

Pete Docter won an Oscar and Bafta for directing the Pixar Movie 'Up' (still the only premiere for a movie I've been to where nobody from the movie showed up), and this evening he added a Bafta for the Pixar movie 'Inside Out' which was a great film.

Angela Bassett's imdb credits are so long they made my eyes kind of blurry, and it's not even that late in the evening yet.

"That girl over there says she loves you more than your girlfriend does. And it's Valentines Day and she's brought her boyfriend, so you might want to take her seriously". The two Chinese girls in front of me weren't really in the Dr Who Demographic... I wasn't sure who they were here for, but it wasn't Matt Smith.

"I'll come over there only if you can pronounce my name correctly" - Soairse Ronan (pronounced somewhat unlike how you'd imagine it) was nominated for Best Actress for the movie 'Brooklyn' at whose premiere last year I almost didn't photograph her.

"You remember The Double? That's awesome!" - The Double (with Mia Wasikowska and Jesse Eisenberg) is a hugely underrated movie, however I last photographed actress Gemma Chan at the premiere of Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit in 2014.. which nobody remembers either.

"As far as conjoined twins go... we got off pretty lightly". Fashion Label Valentino struts the red carpet, presumably pronounces it not red enough, and goes inside.

"F**k Jared Leto. This isn't over". I guess it's possible that any time prior to the actual cinema release of The Suicide Squad, 3-time Oscar winning designer Sandy Powell might still take out Jared Leto and force reshoots for the Joker character...

"Revenant might get all the awards, but at least Sicario was funnier, no?" Benicio Del Toro was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Sicario, and if that movie was in any way funny, it's could only be when compared to the even greater harrowing-ness of The Revenant.

**NOT TAKEN AT THE BAFTAS** in a rare moment of completely uncalled for optimism, I put down my camera in an attempt to get the autograph of George Miller, director of Mad Max Fury Road (and, weirdly, Happy Feet 2 where this photo was taken). By the time I failed to get the autograph he was gone and I missed the photo. Lesson learned : never try.

AMAZINGLY - a second runthrough of the 3,290 photos I (or rather my cameras and I) took reveals I photographed almost HALF of the face of George Miller on the night!! The lesson : I'm not sure!

Director Steven Spielberg is best known for being Steven Spielberg. If you haven't heard of Steven Spielberg, then perhaps you should get back onto Google and look up cat videos or whatever because I don't think I can help you here.

"I bet after I win a Bafta for Best Animated Short you're going to be really happy you photographed me, huh?" - Nina Gantz did indeed win that award, and I was able to recall having photographed her.

Have you watched The Lego Movie (2014)? You should. Anyway, you know how Benny the 1980s-someting spaceman goes utterly batshit crazy at the mere prospect of building a lego spaceship? Well.. that's a fraction of the excitement that the two Chinese girls in front of me had at the prospect of meeting Taron Egerton.

The most risky thing anybody at this premiere did (including the entirety of Rebel Wilson's Best Supporting Actor speech) was Taron Egerton agreeing to come over and meet the two Chinese girls whose screams for him might have altered migratory bird patterns in the Arctic or something.

"Is that your hand in my pocket or am I... wait.... how does that quote go?" I think one of the Chinese girls got Taron Egerton to sign HER PHONE. And from what I can tell it was the front screen she got signed.

At right, Sacha Baron Cohen's wife Isla Fischer hugs Mark Ruffalo, reminding me that they were cast-mates in the rather excellent (I feel) "Now You See Me", a sequel to which she's sadly not in.

"Air High-Fives. Everyone's doing them now. Even Spielberg." - Mark Ruffalo was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for 'Spotlight' whose premiere was last month. The winner in that category ended up being Mark Rylance, who was excellent in 'Bridge of Spies' but who is doing theatre in New York and couldn't attend. Steven Spielberg accepted the award on his behalf.

"This one's for Panem" - Julianne Moore was The Hunger Games : Mockingjay 1 and 2, and I say those two movies had one good movie in them, at a mere 2.5x the required runtime. Still... the second one got me to go to Berlin for the premiere, and that was great.

"Next role? Pro Wrestler. I'm aiming to triple my current bodyweight" To continue on from Stephen Fry's joke, Eddie Redmayne's last few roles were of a Man trapped inside his body ('The Theory of Everything') and of a Woman trapped inside a Man ('The Danish Girl'). To that I'd add that since then he was a Man trapped inside a Wachowski film ('Jupiter Ascending')

"Not even a prize for prolificacy" - Domhnall Gleeson's contribution to cinema in 2015 was pretty spectacular, given he was in all of 'Ex Machina', 'Brooklyn', 'Star Wars The Merchandise Awakens' and 'The Revenant'. I, meanwhile, am going to claim I just made up 'prolificacy' and will sue you if you use it without permission. Feel free to steal the photo, though. It's not that great.

Leonardo DiCaprio signs in our area, and am suddenly touched by more people than I'd anticipated this Valentines Day as everyone around me wants something signed by the man, and I'm seemingly in the way. Or really good looking, I suppose.

As I understand it, Leonaro DiCaprio ate raw bear and lived inside a fish for days (plus possibly died once or twice AND grew a really ugly beard) for this role, and the Academy Award he's so far been denied. He won the Bafta for Best Actor on the night, but I fear for what he might try next if he doesn't end up winning an Oscar...

So .. that was that. The Baftas. It was big, I'm tired, somehow I've got to get up in time for work tomorrow and somehow I've got to clean my apartment by Tuesday for a landlord's inspection (and I doubt saying "but... but... BAFTAs!!" is going to provide a valid reason why my apartment looks like it hosted the 76th Hunger Games)..... but in amongst all the self-pity and that one joke I managed to make in ths journal.... it was good. I enjoyed it...

...and today makes it six.

...and today makes it six.

and it'll go into "The Archive of Movie Premieres" where it'll join:

The 2010 Baftas,
The 2012 Baftas,
The 2013 Baftas,
The 2014 Baftas, AND
The 2015 Baftas.

Until next time!
