The 2015 BFI 'Luminous' Gala

October 6th, 2015

London Film Festival is imminent, and sadly I'll be missing the opening night tomorrow. However, I did become aware of a sort of 'launch' party of sorts that was being held beforehand, and the guest list was quite enticing, AND as usual I had little else to do.

Plus I'd never photographed Joan Collins before.

Here's how it went down:

I'd never been to an event at Guildhall before... nor at an event with a red carpet quite that narrow. (I'm just making polite conversation. I'm not allowed to tell anyone that Tom Hiddleston is on The List, although according to who you talk to he's also not on The List)

Independently of everything else, I think this poster is stunning, and if it hadn't been for the rain and me wanting to leave before it got too late, I'd certainly have grabbed one of these. (Assuming they'd let me or I could manufacture an appropriate distraction)

"SIX pages of guests??" "I'm only looking for one name. My little niece has promised the tantrum to end all tantrums if I can't get a photo of Tom Hiddleston"

"I'm honoured, of course. But I'm not actually the head of a REAL religious order.." Jonathan Pryce plays the High Sparrow in 'Game of Thrones', but was also Keira Knightley's father in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

"I was its first victim, you know!" John Hurt, in amongst two Oscar Nominations, was also the first person killed by an alien in the ALIEN franchise. (I'd call it a spoiler, but that movie is over 30yrs old)

"Rumours of the awesomeness of this hat have been grossly understated". Agreed. I'm not even wearing beanies from my winter 2016 collection yet. It's only October.

Terry Gilliam is somewhat hard to recognise without a coloured shirt and one of his famous dishtowel capes. In formal attire he looks like he could safely be given a Marvel franchise film to direct. Almost.

"Oh, yeah? Well how many Resident Evil films have YOU been in?" Sienna Guillory was in the 2nd, 4th and 5th.

"If you don't make any eye-contact, you won't have to sign autographs or pose for selfies!" Geena Davis is best known for being in Beetlejuice (1988) and Thelma & Louise (1991), though she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 'The Accidental Tourist' in 1989.

"I'll smile and pose happily so long as nobody mentions 'Cutthroat Island' (1995)". I watched that movie for the first time this year and it was... pretty badly broken. But I do remember 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' (1996) fondly.

"I recommend you rewatch Solaris (1996)... it's really not that bad". That movie had a runtime of 6 or 7 hours, if memory serves me. Natascha McElhone was very good in The Truman Show, though, and that was released two years later in 1998.

"I'm not talking about Sherlock Holmes sequels right now. Be distracted by the jaunty angle of my bow tie, please". Guy Ritchie directed (among other things) Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, The Robert Downey Jnr / Jude Law Sherlock Holmes films, and more recently The Man From U.N.C.L.E remake.

Security Guard A : If we can get ourselves on that red carpet as guests, we might be able to brush up against Tom Hiddleston when he arrives Security Guard B : I don't see how that helps me, Sharon Security Guard A : Who the hell cares about you?

"You think I'm pretty? Thanks! But be advised my boyfriend wields a broadsword". Jenna Coleman's boyfriend is Richard Madden who is/was Robb Stark in Game of Thrones.

Staring contest : initiated. (Rather sadly I'm sitting at home editing photos while eating leftovers as this staring contest proceeds in non-real-time)

Jenna Coleman is pretty enough that not even her colourful sparkly dress distracts me..... from... wait... what was I saying?

Can't... stop... photographing.... Jenna... Coleman. (I make no apologies for this, and the number of photos I'm posting of her. If you're here for Tom Hiddleston photos, those are further below.)

"If it means less people mobbing me for my autograph, by all means feel free to photograph Jenna Coleman". Tom Hiddleston has arrived, and the inability of the barriers to adequately restrain the crowd can be directy attributed to him.

Jenna Coleman has sadly moved further along the red carpet and out of sight, but the necessity of decompressing my ribcage after being shoved from behind by people desperate to share the same space, place and oxygen atoms as Tom Hiddleston.

It's taken me ages of staring before I FINALLY recognised Rose Leslie as the actress who played Ygritte on Game of Thrones! (She doesn't look nearly as good in grimy filthy animal skins as she does here) (It's a compliment I haven't had a chance to use on many ladies, sadly)

"I'm sorry, I can't hear which way you want me to turn over the noise of the crowd". Tom Hiddeston is best known for being Tom Hiddleston, but has also most famousy played the character Loki in the Marvel cinematic universe movies.

Such is the power of Tom Hiddleston that even the primarily male paparazzi cordon disregarded the lady on the right, trying desperately to be noticed.

"Favourite movie role? The Great Escapo. Check it out on imdb, people!". I guess it was some kind of cameo. I haven't watched the movie myself.

"Why yes, I would make a great James Bond. Did you say that or did I say that? And could you say it when Barbara Broccoli comes by?" Speaking of Bond... the S.P.E.C.T.R.E premiere is later this month, though it might be prudent to start camping now if you really want to assure yourself of a decent spot.

"Tom Hiddleston? I like the guy, but isn't there a chance he might overshadow the role if we cast him as James Bond?" Barbara Broccoli has produced (or associate produced) all the James Bond films since The Living Daylights - and her father produced all the ones before that.

I don't feel I have to apologise for my decision not to follow Tom Hiddleston around to the back of the media where he's currently doing interviews. Not while Anna Friel is still posing...

"Turn left! Turn right! Speculate on the existential dilemmas of our time! Recite a naughty limerick! Calculate the square root of eighteen!" There's one more arrival I'm waiting to... uh... arrive. But in the meantime, I'll take some photos of Tom Hiddleston being interviewed.

Our final arrival (I hope... as I left soon after) is the quite legendary Joan Collins

"Sorry, boys. But if I don't start moving, I risk not moving." Joan Collins might be best known for being in the TV show Dynasty in the 1980s, but her film career actually goes back to the early 1950s.

So... that's that. I'm missing tomorrow's BFI London Film Festival opening because I've got a composer event at the Royal Albert Hall (I'm attending, not performing. I have a limited set of skills), but hopefully it sets the scene for a good London Film Festival, and many new entries into The Archive Of Movie Premieres.

Until next time!

.....

..... oh very well. Here's a few more Tom Hiddleston photos:

"I hope you're getting my good side? Just kidding.. it's all good side, baby"

"My favourite Marvel villain if you EXCLUDE Loki? Uhh..." I say Tony Stark, myself. He effectively created all three of his enemies in the standalone Iron Man films, goaded Loki into risking New York in The Avengers, and created Ultron while drunk in Avengers Age of Ultron. AND somehow considers himself a hero. Now THAT'S a villain.

Other Tom Hiddleston events include the premieres of Thor, The Avengers, The Deep Blue Sea, War Horse, Only Lovers Left AliveThe 2014 Oliviers and The 2015 Baftas.

And one more photo of Jenna Coleman. Because this is my journal and that means I end it how I want. I still haven't got quite the perfect photo of her yet... and I've tried across the premiere of Cinderella (where was a guest), The 2014 GQ Awards (where I shot high-and-blind), and the Dr Who Season 8 launch, where I shot from a stairwell (true story)

Finally, yes you absolutely should follow me on twitter @berndt2_photo or on facebook by clicking here ... it's where I update whenever I post a new premiere journal
