The 2012 Empire Movie Awards

March 25th, 2012.

I like Awards Ceremonies. They’re like a ‘best of’ of the past year’s premieres, allowing you to catch up or revisit people from the past. Plus, they occasionally have the odd diverting and/or random guest show up. I’d already done the 2012 BAFTAs a bit over a month ago, but now it was warmer and brighter (woo!)

This particular instance, it was the Empire Movie Awards, and I decided to find my spot and see who or what showed up.... and here’s how it went down:

On the face of it my position outside the Grosvenor Hotel seems sub-optimal. (More so if you consider that I’m deep in Autograph Dealer Territory).. still, we’ll see.

This isn't James McAvoy ... is it? (I'm getting the events underway in the manner I've become accustomed to. ie. not knowing anyone)

“Yes, your fan ending to Mass Effect 3 is far superior to that provided by the developers.” This is Michelle Ryan, who was in the short-lived TV series “The Bionic Woman (2007)” but looks like the lady from the "The Woman In Black" premiere as well.

It’s probably just prejudice, but any guy with an expression and tie like that probably calls his girlfriend “Babes” or something. I’m probably wrong. Incidentally, this is Craig Roberts, who if memory serves was a late arrival at the "Wild Bill" premiere last week.

Will Poulter was also at last week's "Wild Bill" Premiere, where he provided a dizzying array of funny expressions. He may have grown even more since then, too.

Dexter Fletcher has been to a lot of premieres, but last week he bucked the trend by attending a premiere for a movie he was actually involved in – his directorial debut "Wild Bill"

Good news for fans of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje – he attended!! (Among other things, he was in 27 episodes of ‘Lost’ and he was “Lock-Nah” in The Mummy Returns (you know who I’m talking about!)

Evanna Lynch played the role of Lovegood in the Harry Potter films, the last one of which was so big they used Trafalgar Square and my photo journal for it originally stretched across TWO journals! Famously, she was selected for the role at least partially for being a huge, huge fan of the series going into the audition.

It’s Morgan Spurlock (Yes, I’ve watched his documentary “Super-Size Me” – it stopped me eating at McDonald’s for about two days. Over subsequent years, I’ve slowly reduced my intake)

So Tattoos ARE still cool? I’ll just write that down for further reference!

The power couple of the week award goes to Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter) and husband Jamie Campbell-Bower (who has been in both Harry Potter AND Twilight… sadly not Hunger Games. Now that WOULD have been an achievement). Last time I saw them was at this Year's BAFTAs, and before that, at the premiere of Twilight : Breaking Dawn part1 (yes. it’s true. I went to a Twilight premiere…)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Autograph Dealer section, get your boxing gloves ready…. it’s Dolph Lundgren!!

Dolph Lundgren, famously, was Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, which is still by far my favourite Rocky film> and it’s even more awesome after I’ve hit two or more vodkas.

Matthew Morrison is the lead teacher from Glee. (I’ve…. been told. Yeah. That’s what I’m sticking with.)

Jeremy Irvine was the lead human actor in Steven Spielberg’'s "War Horse" (Unless you’re in the Hiddleston Camp, where even a brief cameo changes can change who the lead actor is!)

Olivia Wilde… is exceedingly pretty. Loved her in Tron2, she was good in the otherwise indifferent movie "Cowboys and Aliens", AND she snubbed the Dealers entirely at this event, while giving me a momentary pause to rattle off a couple of shots at 7fps. Love it 8)

… I’m just gonna enjoy the photo without worrying overmuch about a comment.

It’s Ron Howard! He’s come a long way, baby. And I don’t mean “like, from America”…. (former child star now director won the ‘Inspiration’ Award on the night. The Legend award went to Tim Burton, who I didn’t see, and the Hero award went to Michael Fassbender who I have missed at every premiere or event he’s been to since A Dangerous Method

Jodie Whittaker was in (and at the premiere of) "One Day" and way back in the depths of my memory, also in/at "St Trinians 2". Beyond that, she was also in “Attack The Block” which I liked while finding it slightly overrated. The again, I can’t fault the dress, shoes, or person.

Bérénice Marlohe has been in many French-language films, but the reason the Autograph Dealers were falling over themselves to get her autograph had mainly to do with her being in the next James Bond movie.

Looking vaguely ubercool-cum-hunchback, broadcaster Jonathan Ross showed up. His wife is a very talented screenwriter, among whose credits is the very excellent “Kick-Ass”, the I-have-no-intention-of-watching-it "One Day", and the I-only-watch-horror-movies-starrring-zombies-so-no-thanks "The Woman In Black"

“Yeah, I f**king killed Nagini. What, are you from PETA or something?” . Matthew Lewis is best known for playing Neville Longbottom in all the Harry Potter films

Chace Crawford is so hot right now. Chace Crawford. (Again, I’ve been “reliably informed” that he’s in a TV show called “Goss-ip Girl” – I hope I spelled that correctly…)

“5hit yeah I’m looking forward to The Avengers!! Wolverine’s gonna be like graaahhH!! (Yeah, I know.. different franchise)” Tom Hiddleston is here, and he’s always into signing, posing, and doing long interviews. He also raps and reads erotic poetry, I hear (and just for once, that’s not a made up thing…!). He won the ‘Best Male Newcomer’ award on the night.

"Also... watch "The Deep Blue Sea"... it's the one without genetically modified Sharks in it."

David Yates directed the last four (4) Harry Potter films. So… yeah. Definitely one of the cooler people to show up to the event. (And REPRESENTING for people with insufficient hairlines – Woo!). He won ‘Best Director’ on the night and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part2 won ‘Best Film’ too.

Sam Claflin is at the very least this // cool. At LEAST.

Face in a car window, and we are about to find out whether Danny DeVito is (a) exceedingly short, or (b) leaning back in his car seat so fans don’t see him.

So… it’s option (a), then!? Still, he remains the coolest role model a young person could have 8)

Speaking of Cool, so is Gary Oldman. He won ‘Best Actor’ on the night – and perhaps only now grudgingly remembers he owes me five dollars. Meanwhile, Best Actress, and Best Female Newcomer, either didn’t attend or snuck by me. Typical!

Gary Oldman, getting ready to throw dice in Vegas. I’ve photographed him numerous times, including "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" but I’ve actually never really got a front-on shot (woo!)

In the absence of photos of Michael Fassbender, Chris Hemsworth, or (for the strangely-inclined) Tim Burton, all of whom eluded me; here’s one final Hiddleston shot. Sadly, neither Charlize Theron nor Scarlett Johansson showed up either (I’m not sure they were invited, but it would still have been nice if they crashed the party…)

So… that’s about it. Next up, I’m missing a premiere (sadness…) but there is another later this week to look forward to.... for now, though:

Here’s The Archive of Movie Premieres

Most recent additions:
The Hunger Games- Lawrence and Two Hemsworths!
John Carter (of Mars) - Kitsch! Dafoe!
The 2012 BAFTAs – Pitt! Clooney! Streep!
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Dench! Hardy! Patel

Until next time!

ps. if you want (and your internet infrastructure allows it) please follow me on facebook or twitter @berndt2_photo and you too can find out (for free!) (for now!) whenever I post an events journal.
