The 2011 BIFAs - British Independent Film Awards

December 4th, 2011.

So the backstory is that I went to the BIFAs in 2011 and it was a really hard day's night, photographically. So much so that I never bothered to do a journal. Instead, I went again in 2012 and it was even WORSE. So I now feel inclined to revisit past non-glories and catch up. I think I can remember what it was like. Plus the photos are... interesting.

Here's how my foggy memory years later pretends to recall how it went down:

So I'm standing behind a barrier by the side of a road. There are security but no red carpet. My camera has good ISO but no flash and the ambient lighting consists of a few streetlamps, passing traffic, and a spinning MOET ad. I suppose it's still better than anything else I could do (Please keep your judgements on the apalling state of my private to the comments below..)

Blurry, herefore Art, I always say. ("Say" or "Whimper", depending). I have no idea who this is, but They Have Arrived.

Traffic picks up, and suddenly I can see again and my camera decides to focus on... no stars currently in evidence.

If I was keeping to a fictional narrative, I would have withheld this photo til the end because it's actually pretty decent based on the standards of the photos to follow. But, randomly, here's Reese Witherspoon! I don't know what she's been nominated for... surely not "Monsters And Aliens"? FIrstly, I don't think it's that popular, and secondly this is 2011 and that movie was released in 2009.

Brendan Gleeson is probably best known as Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films, and I've never photographed him before! (Now I can merely say "I've never photographed him WELL before")

If this is Michelle Ryan, then my skills at recognising people from blurry photos is possibly improving. I've photographed her before... but owing to various irregularities in the way Time works (ie. linearly), it won't be til next year at the premiere of "The Man Inside"

When I last photographed him at a GQ and possibly a prior Empire Awards, I had no idea who he was. I still don't. But he's the one wearing the tuxedo, not me, so I think it's clear where blame falls. (edited to add : actor Craig Roberts?)

"I'm hugging you on suspicion of being famous.... is that okay?" I hope it is -- it's 2/3 of my strategy in meeting people. (edited to add, with thanks to Andrew J : John Boyega, from 'Attack the Block' and though he doesn't know it yet, becaues Disney hasn't bought Star Wars off George Lucas yet, Star Wars ep VII in 2015)

I don't know who this, but the bokeh in this shot is almost cool enough for me to want to post ths photo anyway.

Actress Jodie Whittaker was in "Attack The Block" in 2011. That's as much research as I'm willing to do at this stage. I have watched the movei : I liked it!

I also like actor Will Poulter - enough that I'm saying the high-ISO grain on this photo adds character. (no?)

I dial the grain up even further as passing street traffic gets more sparse, and capture Eddie Marsan, arguably best known for being in Guy Ritchie's 'Sherlock Holmes' films.

Dominic Cooper gets Grain AND Focus Assist Lamp Light from my camera. I'm pulling out all the stops here.

I think this is the filmmaking duo (?) behind My Week With Marilyn (checks imdb) - yes it is, director Simon Curtis and wife /actress Elizabeth McGovern.

Rebecca Hall, I presume? (If I keep introducing myself to actresses with that line, I'm sure to get it right eventually...)

The calibre of attendee has just skyrocketed massively with the arrival of director Ron Howard! (I raise the grain factor on the camera even further in wild celebration!)

I'm so pleased to finally photograph Ralph Fiennes up close that I totally forget to turn down the grain on my camera to celebrate his arrival coinciding with a bit of extra ambient light. I like to celebrate my victories one at a time.

"The Nose? Oh, I had it put in storage for almost a decade while I played Voldemort. It's nice to have it back, though"

If Ron Howard gave this event credibility and Ralph Fiennes gave it an evil gloss of cool, Vanessa Redgrave now provides class, and much as the absolute quality of these pictures isn't great, it's at least something (plus I'm typing this after next year's BIFAs which were appalling)

"You can see into the future and see next year's BIFAs? Me too!" Well, that explains her absence.

This is possibly actor/director Kenneth Branagh. Of course, with this little light it's also possible this is Charlize Theron.

Things have gotten so bad, light- (and now weather-) wise, that I've done something so obvious I'm surprised I didn't think of it earlier.... I'm using the flash on my camera. It's a failure of sorts... I don't like flash. Also : this is Benedict Cumberbatch, who is very cool (and was when I took this photo as well)

"I'm signing your photo with "B.C." not "Benedict Cumberbatch". And if you don't stop complaining, I'll start signing it "B"... and if you don't stop there it'll be "C" because that's even faster". Efficiency is king.

Hayley Atwell played Agent Peggy Carter in "Captain America", and was also in "The Sweeney"... but that was released in 2012... and this is 2011.

Charles Dance. Best known in 2011 for being in "Alien3", but even then (imdb informs me) he'd been in a couple of episodes of Game of Thrones, which is even (or "much") cooler.

The presence of a passing truck on wet roadside in the near-darkness reminds us once again that this is not California, and we are not in Hollywood..

Celia Imrie is possibly even better know for the jacket/vest/top she's wearing than her role in 2001's Bridget Jones' Diary... or the role of Fighter Pilot Bravo 5 in Star Wars Episode I : The Phantom Menace (also.. you rock, IMDB)

Arguably the last Big Name arrival (with apologies obviously to Celia Imrie), this is Director Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for directing The Kings Speech.

I.. kind of really like this photo, actually.

So... that was a pleasant stroll down memory lane. You can see why, based on the attendees and photographic quality, I'd be very eager to come back again next year "and be horribly disappointed"

Still... another for "The Archive of Premieres", which is almost always a good thing.

Until next time!
